Hi Lisa. I can appreciate what you say. Welfare in New York State has become a family tradition in some families much akin to military service in other families. There is no doubt that the Democrats believe in a government solution to everything. The problem is it's been proven time and time again that government solutions are least effective solutions of all possible options. I think most of the problem is that we as a people have lost our desire to educate ourselves, work hard, pay our dues and succeed. As such, more and more people are looking to the government to do the things we can and should do for ourselves.
I recently saw a study and the results were a real eye opener. The following question was asked "Do you believe that in America today you can succeed through hard work?" A simple question.
78% of the people who identified themselves as Conservatives/Republicans said YES. 14% of the people who identified themselves as Democrat/Liberal/Progressive said YES.
Given the first job of any politician is to be elected. The Obama types are always going to singing the tune that the deck is stack against you, you can't win, you need our help, you are a victim. This message feeds right into those who are on the "Progressive" side of the aisle. So it's a no-brainer that you have a large segment of the population that does not want to be educated or work to succeed. They honestly and truly believe that education and hard work is a futile effort. Personally, if a person wants to be ignorant and lazy, I have no problem with that. Where I do have the problem is with the demagogues like Obama vilifying those who do choose to be educated and work hard and telling the unproductive folks in society that they are somehow entitled to a portion of the wealth others produce.
I know this would never happen but people who do not contribute to the national good (taxes) should not be allowed to have a say (vote) on how things are done. We currently have a situation where the top 50% of the wage earners pay 97+% of all income taxes. Very soon we'll have a situation where the unproductive will dictate to the productive.
Commie,

I don't think we'll see tyranny of the "unproductive". We'll continue to have what we have now - Tyranny of the lobbyists!!!

Commie, do you remember the guy who had the very clever idea that people should pay a tax on gas based on their income? He figured he was "owed" that because "some" have more than he does.....The scheme was a maniacal money grab on his part so he didn't have to go out and work harder to keep up with te economy. What frosts me is that the minute that someone suggests that people become better educated and work harder to further their economic circumstances, out comes the cry "the government isn't helping me DO that." I could just scream sometimes. I read many of these posts and don't comment on a lot of them, but this is my personal pet peeve. If one more person demands that those "with" give further to those "without" for no other reason than some sort of socialist parity, I may just simply throw my hands up in the air. Where has our sense of self worth and personal responsibilty gone? Here's another poll question.....ask a larger number of people in the area if the recognize the name Horatio Alger. They will all know who the latest two bit hustler rap star might be, but they will have no concept of bootstrap mentality. Darned shame.

Eisenhower was a General of the Army (five star general) in the United States Army who served as the thirty-fourth President of the United States. During the Second World War, he served as Supreme Commander of the Allied forces in Europe, with responsibility for planning and supervising the successful invasion of France and Germany in 1944–45. In 1951, he became the first supreme commander of NATO. Eisenhower's father was actually a Lutheran and his mother was a JW. And they didn't disown him. He parted ways with the JWs when he entered West Point because of the anti-militarist stance of that group. A General of Eisenhower's standing has plenty of experience within the Washington circles and especially on Capitol Hill. How can you honestly compare Eisenhower to Obama?
Let me add a little to this.

Before Ike became President, he had quite a bit of experience on the world stage. The surrender of the French in North Africa. The surrender of the Italian Government. There were some fools in the States that complained about these activities. They were nutz. Ike was the guy on the spot. He did a fine job.

He also had to deal with the two most frustrating characters involved in WW-2. DeGaulle acted as though he had an army of five million. He had ZIP! The US had to clothe, feed, and equip his troops. From time to time he became uncooperative. Ike would then threaten to cut him off. That worked. The other one was Churchill. He perceived himself as a military genius. He was not. Many times his actions were those of a drunken bungler. He constantly went outside the chain of command to get Ike to do things his way.

Ike had some experiences that no other candidate before or after ever had. It is said that he smoked five packs of cigs a day. When I had the habit, I used two packs a day. If I had to deal with these two characters, I probably would have smoked a carton (ten packs) a day.

Fickle finger of history - Ike's progression of commands: North Africa, Italy, Western Europe. Ike was not the first choice for the North African Command. If the command had gone to the original general selected, Ike probably would have ended up as an obscure Major General.

There has been lots of discussion on this forum, and others, regarding Senator McCain's sweep through Buffalo, where he wouldn't meet the regular folk, and just wanted to get the money and run, no respect for the everyday common people, just here to meet the millionaires, and blah blah blah.
The following excerpt is from a member of our proud military fighting the war against terrorism in Afghanistan.......
Everything seemed planned for the future campaign commercials — at least, that’s how it seemed to a U.S. Air Force captain when Sen. Barack Obama and his entourage swooped into Bagram Air Force Base in Afghanistan for an hour-long visit last Saturday at the start of a week-long foreign tour.
“He got off the plane and got into a bullet proof vehicle” without pausing to acknowledge the U.S. troops who had been waiting all day just for the opportunity to meet him, the officer told the Blackfive pro-military blog.
As the soldiers lined up to shake his hand, the Illinois senator “blew them off and didn’t say a word,” ducking into the conference room to meet the general.
Then the armored vehicles took him to where “he could take his publicity pictures playing basketball. He again shunned the opportunity to talk to soldiers to thank them for their service,” the captain wrote.
“As you know, I am not a very political person. I just wanted to share with you what happened” during Obama’s visit, the captain related.
“I swear, we got more thanks from the NBA basketball players or the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders than from Senator Obama,” he added.
This Captain may not have understood what he saw. People protected by the Secret Service do not move about as they please. The SS very carefully orchestrates and choreographs their every move. Many Presidents have complained to little avail.

I've seen these guys in action three times. INCREDIBLE!!!!!

When Roosevelt went to Casablanca to meet Churchill, the President was greeted by General George Patton. His troops, all polished and shined up, as an honor guard lined both sides of the road. The Secret Service guys all their weapons loaded and drawn. When Patton asked why, he was told to make sure that no US soldier shot the President. If I posted what Patton said, my computer would start on fire.

Our national debt is because of a bunch of spend happy congressmen, senators, and with the help of the Pres.
Soc Sec is screwed up because it is a govt run ponzie scheme.
FEMA is screwed up because it is a Federal govt program.
Our healthcare system is screwed up because of too much govt involvement and not enough cash being paid for services rendered.
Solutions: Continue the war until all the radicals who want us dead are dead themselves, taking the war to where ever they may be.
Reign in our congress and senate by freezing govt expenditures for the next year and reducing it each year following by about 3 percent. Cutting social programs first like Nat Endowment for the Arts and PBS.
Privatize Social Security. Let each person invest in their own retirement plan as they see fit with their own hard earned money.
Get the govt out of health care except from an oversight standpoint. Encourage physicians and other health care professionals to accept cash instead of this messed up health insurance crap.
Someone once told me not to complain about something unless I was ready to offer solutions.
McCain will mess up our govt less than Obama.
1. Bush and his folks sold the war on the basis of WMD. Where are they? The UN ran inspections before we invaded, they found NO WMD. We (USA) spend between 45 to 50 BILLION a year on intelligence. If this is the best we can do, we better get some new people. After no WMD were found, then Bush & Company came up with all kinds of other reasons for the invasion. I believe that certain Bush appointees were planning this invasion BEFORE Sept. 11.
2. Sadly the Washington folks spend all kinds of $$ on stupid stuff, and the necessary stuff gets neglected.
3. Social Security is no Ponzi scheme. The money is there. McCain collects SS as is his right. He doesn't understand how it works. Excess funds go into a Trust Fund. The US borrows from SS (and pays interest). These borrowings are a part of the debt. Wall Street would love to get their hands on a nice chunk of SS. Sorry, I've seen too much of business in this country to trust them. The financial guys sure did a good job with the mortgage situation. Or were all the failed loans honest mistakes? Due to the "Boomer Blip", an increase in the SS deduction to 13.5% would do the trick. It is now about 12.5%. The Medicare portion is a real fiasco. The drug plan is worse than a ponzi plan. My sis is on the Medicare drug plan. Once a month she gets a statement showing what the Government pays for her drugs. In all cases, the Government is paying MORE than the list prices published by drugstore.com which is a US company affiliated with RiteAid. The Government was paying $97 a month for a drug that drugstore.com sells for $21. NICE!!! Drug lobbyists sure done a good job. Sis wrote Boob Tom Reynolds. His position is that the Government should NOT negotiate prices with the drug companies!! Is he saying our Government can't do something that all other industrialized countries have done?
4. If you're saying FEMA is screwed up because it's a Government organization, then there is something wrong with our Government. We are going to have disasters, and we should be able to respond quickly in a proper manner.
5. I don't believe in socialized medicine. But there are some disturbing facts. We spend more than any other country per head on medical care, yet we do not get the best outcomes. I don't think doctors in the US do too badly from a financial standpoint. Look through the phone book. Lotsa foreign born doctors. How many US born doctors go foreign countries? Why can't the Government set up a commission of longheads to come up with some workable suggestions, plans, etc?
If the current Government can no longer serve the people, perhaps it's time to abolish it and start over.

Thanks senator Obama for visiting our injured troops in Germany while you were there.

Oh, wait a minute! You didn't visit ANY of our troops over in Germany while yor were there. You disrespected them. Oh, it was justa photo op for the liberal biased media. I get it.

You evil, immoral, Godless socialist scumbag.

I wouldn't let that fool run a Chunk E Cheese, let alone our country.

You wan a black Jimmy Carter? You want a new Soviet Union. You want your hard earned money to be given to welfare crack heads? You want a total surrender to al-Qaeda and the Taliban? Then Obama is your man. It's just that simple.

How's the reparations going Senator Obama. White guilt liberals can't wait to pay up BILLIONS!

James,

I see your balls are still in an uproar.

Go down to your corner gin mill for a little Kielbasie and Iroquois Beer.

You really need some new material. Day after day after day after day, the same horse ****!!! I gather you won't vote for Obama.

Here's something that will really tickle your nuts. What happens when Obama loses the poplular vote, but wins the electoral college vote? Looks as though this is what will happen.

Maybe Obama couldn't run a Chunk E Chese, but I'll bet he could run a BBQ shop. You couldn't organize a one car funeral.

I hear one way tickets to Poland are pretty cheap at this time. Why not go? You ain't gonna like having a porch monkey** as your leader.

I hear you're doing a magniferous job on the farm. Keep up the good work!

Here's something I forgot.

Truman, Ike, and General Omar Bradley were riding in a car. It probably was at Potsdam. Can't verify this right now as I have no access to my books. Anywho, Bradley claimed that Truman offered Ike anything he wanted INCLUDING the Democratic Presidential nomination in 1948. Ike declined. This comes from one of the two books Bradley wrote. I believe it was the second one - "A General's Story". So I guess Ike could have become President four years earlier had he wanted to.

The main reason Ike ran in 1952 was to keep Robert Taft out of the White House. Ike felt he was a right wing cracked pot and would have destroyed all of Ike's work at NATO for one thing. Thank God for Ike!!!!

Hansie,
I have read most of your posts today and I have learned a great deal from them. I can also say I tend to agree with you on most of the issues. I especially enjoyed your post on the Drug War, Guns, and cellphones. You were spot on with that post.
You are obviously a very knowledeable man on many diverse subjects. Your knowledge of Eisenhower is scholarly. I believe you could probably write a book on him. Let's talk about Patton. There was a man I would have liked to see as President. I don't believe he was into the political game as was Eisenhower though, just wouldn't have had the patience for the job. He was the type of General you would want to break out for wars and then put back on the shelf until the next one.
I must also comment on this new look for you, less rants and rave and edge. It is working well. Let's you concentrate on getting your point across more dramatically and with more facts. And I'm sure Lisa appreciates it!

Kudos to you, oops! i know exactly who Horatio Alger is and I was floored when I read your post! I've been semi-composing a post based on HA. I know the female version of HA...my mother. born a coal miner's daughter (in Charleston, WV, not Butcher's Holler). Sidebar... my great-grandparents lived on $35 Social Security per month, had no electric, phone or inside toilet. This after my great-grandfather worked 55 years in the coal mines, accident free, too... I have the certificate he earned. Too bad all the certificate was good for might be to wipe his butt. Anyway, my mother worked her way up the ladder in the inurance industry and became one of the top three producers in the country (S&E lines, not home, auto, life). She retired at age 70 and now 4 years later receives offers every month to return as a consultant. I could go on and on, but don't want to bore anyone. she is my hero, and for years I've said the embodiment of Horatio Alger's "rags to riches" bootstrap mentality.

I'm loving this side of Hansie! The more I read the more he sounds like my late step-dad, a true patriot and student of the constitution. He once said, "the only way I'd vote for John McCain was if he ran against Hillary Clinton" He also referred to Obama as the Anti-Christ. He lived the last 22 years of his amazing life in AZ, so he was familiar with the McCain machine. What amazes me... he made these comments almost two years ago... how many folks (save those from IL) knew Obama's name 2 years ago? I wish every day he was here to guide me through this tough election!

Barack Obama concedes that America’s troops have contributed to improvements on the ground in Iraq, but he still stands by his vote against the surge.

Why not just admit that he was wrong?

Come on, senator, this is a lot easier than changing churches. Say: As a proud American, I’m delighted that the surge has worked so we can move forward with my timetable for withdrawal. Look, if I’d known how successful it was going to be, I would have voted for it. At the time it didn’t seem like a good bet, but prognosticators go broke in wartime.

See, that wasn’t so bad.

Obama insists that, hypothetically, his own plan might have worked better than the surge:We don’t know what would have happened if I, if the plan that I put forward in January 2007, to put more pressure on the Iraqis to arrive at a political reconciliation, to begin a phased withdrawal, what would have happened had we pursued that strategy.

But we do know. Or at least we can wager with some confidence that had we withdrawn within 14 months, as Obama was proposing at the time, Iraq today would be in bloody chaos, al-Qaida victorious, and the U. S. further diminished in the Arab world.

Obama voted against the surge, he said then, because he was convinced that inserting 20,000 more troops into Iraq was likely to make things worse, not better. Now trying to justify that miscall, he says he couldn’t have anticipated the Sunni Awakening.

Wait. Obama could anticipate that the war in Iraq would go badly. He could anticipate that the surge wouldn’t work. But he couldn’t anticipate that the Sunnis would turn on al-Qaida?

Actually, Obama had more information at his fingertips in assessing the probability of the surge’s success than he did for any of his other predictions, including assurance from commanders on the ground that local tribal leaders were showing a willingness to take on al-Qaida.

Most Americans, including many in Congress who approved the Iraq invasion, say that if they’d known then what they know now, they wouldn’t have supported the war. Why is it so hard for Obama, knowing what he knows now, to say that he should have supported the surge?

Wrong man, wrog time. The audacity of hopelessness and defeat by al-Qaeda
