Can a sadistic 13 year old boy be rehabilitated?

Is it possible for the STATE system of corrections to do what his seemingly loving family could not?

How is it possible for someone who is an evil child to become a productive man?

I say ask the family of the little boy who was murdered if they think he should be released!

This boy needs life in prison. I don't really care if he is rehabilitated (according to himself or experts). Preying on children or the elderly is deviant and insane! He can rot forever!!!

I was living in the Savona area when this tragedy happened. My family was also camping with Eric whom was camping with his grandparents. That weekend he was very polite to all of us including my 4 year old son (at that time). He went boating alone with him, played hide n seek as well as sit by the camp fire and make smores. Then on that Monday afternoon when Savona was turned upside down looking for a murderer, no one would of ever thought it was Eric. When I found out a week later it was him, I was devastated. Thinking it could of been my son.
Should he get out?? Well in my opinion if he ever does I really don't think he should live in the Steuben County area. Many lives were touched by this and there isn't one sole who has forgotten who done this to an innocent little boy. Yes he was bullied in school and at home but that was no excuse for what happened. I just hope that if and when he does get released that he has received the treatments so that he never does this again to anyone.
In the end it will be up to the judicial system.

"asset to society"

People will say ANYTHING to get out of prison. It's just like the people, who after raping and murdering people claims to find G_D, and that they are a reformed person, they should be released, because they are no longer a danger to society. These people need to remain in prison for very long time.

I read the site and looked at the picture of the little boy. Very sad. What a terrible loss for the family. Should Eric ever be release, after seeing the picture and reading how he could torture animals the way he did I don't see how he could ever be safe in the community. I agree with "don'tLookAtMe' ask the boys family what should be done with Eric! I'm sure they would have a few ideas!

That boy should never leave an institution. He, as a child, committed murder combined with sex torture. He is beyond help. Warehouse him forever as cheaply as possible.

i think that it would be wrong to release him. He took the life of an innocent person, and that life can never be given back to Derek. Why should he be given a second chance at the outside world?

I hope that he rots in Jail for the rest of his life. If released he will kill again and that is a fact. He needs help, and the help is in Jail for the rest of his life.

I'm sorry but I feel Eric Smith should stay in prison. There are other sources of information for young children on bulling, such as parents, teachers, school counselors and peers. Why let a convicted killer out of prison because he "may" be able to help a child? Perhaps they could let him out for a day heavily guarded to speak with a group of individuals (educators & parents) but definately NOT childre.

I know enough that this guy should not be released from prison. He's a bent and twisted individual that has become "prisonized" for want of a better word. If you want him as a neighbor feel free to petition the corrections system to have him released to your neighborhood. Otherwise he should stay where he is.

Obviously his family thought they knew him, I feel for them. What he did should keep him locked up for the rest of his life, or to help us tax payers "An eye for an eye!"
