Left turn signals in Amherst confusing

So what's the hold-up on putting in better signals? We take it for granted that all traffic lights are going to be bright enough and clear enough to see and understand.

What do you think about people who run red lights? Do you think it's a big problem here in western New York?
We want to hear what you think! Post your comments here in our News 4 forum. Also, be sure to watch my reporter's notebook and my story on the left turn signals at N. Bailey and Maple in Amherst... right here on WIVB.com

Personally I have had no problems at that intersection. Yes there is a big problem with people that run red lights. however how about stop signs. Try sitting at Hewitt and Parkridge sometime and watch all the cars that don't stop or come to a rolling stop. It will top what you see at a red light!

Running red lights is a precourser to a fatal accident only ignorant fools do it if ever pulled over the citing officer should not warn them but write a citation & charge the maximum money is hard to part with a warning goes in one ear & out the otherI would set the charge at 200 dollars that is a lesson

I lived in Amherst for 25 yrs and yes, that light was always a disaster. My question to Amherst is, why didn't you notice this when you put it in. Whose idea was it and why was it not tested..first!
When you have a defective light and a busy intersection, I believe you will find a lot of red light running. People feel entitled to their turn and if they miss it, they will take it illegally!
I know I have gone through that light as yellow, because of the long wait and missed turn signal, only to find at least two cars right behind me, which of course they had to go through the light as red!
Amherst has way too much traffic and way too little control over its flow. They need to care about the accident potential and spend some of the high taxes they recover there, to reassess the traffic situation, before it becomes even worse..if that could be possible! Niagara Falls Blvd is beyond a nightmare!

The green aarow to turn left onto Maple has been too dim for as long as i can remember! As far as running red lights? My solution is to drive as fast as possible when you see the yellow caution lite!

If I walked through any local mall with a loaded gun pointing it at people, my guess is it would be about 5 minutes before the police had something to say about it. If I were to start shooting it under the assumption nobody would be in front of the bullets; how long before the SWAT team took me out?

A vehicle is every bit as dangerous as a gun and responsible for a lot more deaths annually. Why does a driver get a ticket for running a red light while someone shooting a gun in the mall would get shot, jailed, locked up in a psych ward or all of the above? What you need to do is a study of what happens to people when they get behind the wheel of a vehicle. There is a definite change in attitude. Look at the TV commercials - if I buy this car I will be invincible, invulnerable and all roads are there only for me to drive on. Get a dash camera and drive the 290 one morning. You will be amazed and how many people are driving without the ability to drive.

"Amherst taxpayers alone would have to share that burden, which is probably in the area of 80 or 90 thousand dollars to do that one signal."
What the hell, does anyone see a problem with this quote. In order to change one signal, it's gonna cost how much? And Amherst, no one has questioned this. Does anyone know signal work on state and county roads are now usually sub-contracted out. Time to review your books, Amherst. PS: How much for a stop sign?

Your question has nothing to do with the story this is about. It's not about running red lights, it's about people not seeing the left turn arrow on the signal. THAT's the story.

Poor traffic lights, esp at a busy intersection, are a potential for deaths..also! Not all reporting has to be about the gang activity in Buffalo. That terror is around and we know it, but other life cannot stop because of it. So these important stories make news, as they should! And swearing about it won't find a cure for your concern about gang deaths....you must see the world beyond you own backyard..gangs have existed forever and will always take lives...unfortunately, but that is what they call real life!

Temporary fix: exchange the small arrow lense for the larger one. It can be done in less then an hour and I'm sure that the highway dept has other lenses in the garage

Too simple, too easy, too quick, too cheap, too practical. Never happen in can-of-worms Amherst.

I see a few blogers are trying to upset the thread talking about something but about red lights they disrupt the real reason of the threads yep yellow means a change in signals it doesnt mean gas it & go like a shot through the red lightfollowing 2 or 3 in front of you
