Free lunch program on Buffalo's east side

Massive waste of taxpayer dollars. These kids mothers should have no trouble making lunch for them, it's not like they're at work during the day. They probably send the kids outside so they can get knocked up with their next welfare raise, oops, I mean, child. Furthermore, if they used their taxpayer provided food stamps wisely instead of filling the cart with overpriced junk food, they might be able to make them last the whole month. And this has nothing to do with racism, there are plenty of people of every race sucking off the system, trash is trash no matter what color bag it's in!!

yes Sir I do...have since I was 16. First job was Mcdonalds. I am at my current employer for 13 years. Have consistently worked my whole life. Only time I didnt work was when I was on maternity leave. Oh by the way, my HUSBAND works too. And I own a house in Buffalo and pay property taxes, school taxes etc.
My wages are supporting current Social Security recipients and I am part of the group of 30 somethings facing the possibility of no Social Security for myself. I have been paying into it for the past 20 or so years. And yes it makes me angry and yes I ticks me off.
And no sir, the free lunch program does not bother me. Some kids unfortunatley - their parents fell on hard times and cant afford much. And I dont mean the 14 year old with the 2 year old kid. I mean kids whose parents have worked and got divorced or lost jobs. A free meal is $$$ saved for some families.
If we are going to complain about free lunches in the summer, then get rid of it in the schools ALL schools during the school year... private, public, charter. Get rid of it in Buffalo, Orchard Park, Amherst. No reduced lunches or breakfasts. Whats fair is fair. No matter the income, race or nothing. Just get rid of it.

I teach in an inner city school and I can tell you these kids come to school with nicer sneakers then most of us have. Their parents always have cell phones too, but when I ask them to bring in more pencils I get harassed about it. Priorites are not balanced, at all.

Actually the white trash is worse. The black parents are kind, the dirty white ones are very mean, almost insecure. Being a former drug counseler it has been the white parents that have had the most drug issues, this is just my experience.

SOUL FOOD free meals by the state errrr taxpayer I always thought SOUL FOOD was in the can underneath the counters & were ready for the dumpsters lol have fun

Hi there. I live on the East Side (between Humboldt Parkway and Fillmore). I am not a recipient of any social services.

Most of you people have no idea what you are talking about or what types of families live on the East Side.

Most of the families I know are single-parent households. However, many live with extended family, and most parents do work - in fact, very hard, and long hours. I agree that the people in my neighborhood do not buy food as healthy as they should because they are not educated on nutrition or food preparation, and because they value convenience over nutrition or quality.

During the school year many of these children qualify for lunch vouchers because of the low income within their families. In the summer, this support evaporates.

Once upon a time, my husband was a recipient of these programs, and he recalls that it was sometimes the biggest or only meal he had all day - and his single mother worked two full-time (minimum wage) jobs. If you put a face on these children, I can't believe people are supporting them going hungry because they don't want to pay for it with their tax dollars. You know what I don't want to support with my tax dollars? Bass Pro. I think feeding children is one of the best possible uses of my tax dollars, and as an earlier poster said, it is nearly guaranteed that the cost and abuse of the system will be kept down because of the nature of it.

I would love to see a program that instructs parents on food preparation and nutrition. Lots of parents in my neighborhood think a hot dog and ice cream is a balanced meal.

There is a program that instructs parents on food preparation---it's called The Food Network! Channel 50 on Time Warner Cable!

Sweetheart, unfortunatley most of the morons on this blog are old white men with a chip on their shoulder. I get fired up over these losers myself and have to keep reminding myself that they are not worth our breath.

I agree - most of the morons on here are old white men with nothing better to do - a good example - the Life Coach. They have no idea what they are talking about because most of them never got farther than a high school education, or even grade school for that matter. They are hopelessly stupid. They need to pick up a sociology textbook instead of a sports illustrated magazine. I'm all for free lunches for the children. They didn't ask to be brought into this world, and unfortunately they are the ones that have to suffer the most. I'll gladly pay my tax dollars so they can have something to eat.
