While these two young men are obviously well-intentioned, they've missed an important point.

When they fall out for morning formation, they wear the prescribed uniform of the day. No deviation is permitted. Even though a graduation walk is a civilian formation, they should respect the prescribed "uniform of the day" for that event, which is cap and gown -- and ONLY cap and gown.

If they want to show their pride in becoming soldiers, a better way to do it would be to wear dress greens BENEATH the cap and gown, then after the graduation walk is over, they can remove cap and gown and show their pride to others.

One of the most critical attributes of military service is the ability to FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS.
