Susan Boyle's talent is just voice deep

Full story: Valley Dispatch

"Janis Joplin was certainly no beauty. Neither was Mama Cass. But that was another era."
So let's begin a new era. I love Janis Joplin, Mama Cass and Susan Boyle.

That was one of the nastiest articles I have read in a long time! Who are you to judge someone by their looks??? There are far more "real" people out there than so called attractive people. I was always told beauty was only skin deep and beauty lies within the person, not on the outside. If that is the case, you certainly would not rank up there with "the pretty people"!!!

I think if you deconstruct many female celebrities you would see that feature by feature, they are not beautiful or pretty. A designer outfit, good hair design, a little tweaking and toning and above all, self-confidence, can do wonders.

Excuse me? Lenny Kravitz and Eddie Vedder are unattractive? I think it's pretty universally accepted that those two men are very attractive. Also, I would not call Josh Grobin homely by any means. You're confused.

Josh Groban may have started out as a nerdy looking teenager with a fantastic voice, but he has grown up to be an extremely attractive 28 year old man. That's in addition to being one of the friendliest and most caring people around.

There are some very nasty comments in this article. I agree that Susan Boyle has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard, but I think her looks are no different than other women her age. I've watched her face when she sings, and I've seen the love in her face for what she is doing. This, I think, makes her beautiful. Unlike the author, I would love to buy a dvd of Susan Boyle singing.
As for her mental breakdown, it was not that of a "crazy old aunt living in the attic". She became famous overnight & then was hounded relently by the paparazzi. That would challenge anyone's mental stability!

You know it might be better to just say nothing if it isn't nice. What exactly would be the purpose of writing such an article and furthur more who are you to be writing such a thing anyways? I mean who really cares what your opinion is on such matters? It's interesting to me that no one knows who you are, pretty or not ,and the world knows who Susan Boyle is. And for the record, Josh Groban is drop dead gorgeous. Maybe just try a little kindness....it's already a hard enough world out there.

This is interesting ... the concept and importance of attractiveness.

First of all, I don't find her face unattractive, anyway. Why? Because whatever 'perfect' features she may or not have been blessed/cursed with, it is the light of her inner nature that shines out from her eyes and smile - well enough to transcend the superficial, skin-deep (or cosmetic) beauty we have been told we expect and 'deserve'.

I've seen many so-called top model beauties who leave me cold, if not repelled - because there is a sense of woodenness about their standard-issue, super-white smiles that rings hollow.

If we need a pretty face to get off, then we can just buy a book of pretty pictures and get our fill - all of them unattainable, imaginary characters, of course. Alternatively we can listen to a beautiful voice which cuts right through to the heart and is reflected in the eyes.

I know which beauty I value most.

Your comments on loveliness in the mlusic industry help to perpetuate that sterotype which has led to a lot of bland music - It IS the music that should be paramount - for the other - go to a runway.

Mick Jagger, Steven Tyler.........Josh Groban????? Ummm....I don't quite get that at all. I mean I guess Groban may have started out (back in 2000) looking a bit adolescent and awkward, but have you seen him lately? Yeah....I thought not. LOL

I do agree though about the double standard...no news there. Has always been that way. Not sure it will ever change.

Not to mention that the voice sends goosebumps all over anyone hearing her sing!

If Mick Jagger and Steven Tyler had been run of the mill people on the street instead of rockers, the whole world would have found them to be butt ugly!

Mr. Shaughnessy -

You've got it right about Susan's talent and I'll be one of the first to buy a CD.

However, you're way offbase about her attractiveness. That's a package deal to most of us. The whole person - not just the shallowness of looks - you should learn that.

And Josh Groban ugly????? You ought to ask a few thousand women about that - they might let you live - or not.

Men!!!!!!!

Susan is much more entertaining when shes showing her rough side and wiggling and flashing thigh for Piers Morgan. Her singing sucks. You can watch her sing for two hours thats you choice. I would rather see her in a British comedy to keep me entertained. I think she has a real gift for that because shes not shy about getting a laugh out of people.

Who do you think you are???? There are many kinds of "attractive"... Susan Boyle is unconventionally attractive. "Differently" attractive. I sat on a little pier in St. Lucia, with Amy Whinehouse at Christmas, as we dangled our feet in the water. She was clean of alcohol and drugs (And make-up)..and was ravishingly beautiful. But would the media be interested in shots of a such a pretty, sober girl? Of course not!
Susan Boyle will, I trust, be propery cared for and not exploited. What I will remember with utter JOY..is the look on Cowell's face, when she opened her mouth and sang. PRICELESS!

I watched Susan on Larry King when she sang the theme song to Titanic. I was horrified and turned it off. What a way to destroy a beautiful song. Singers are a dime a dozen.
