Never said that Neighbor. I said that all sides need to open their eyes and look at what is going on. No side should shoulder the blame for this quagmire we are all in now and both should work toward a solution. Not gonna happen though. A judge is now going to dictate what is going to happen. Isnt that the arguement against binding arbitration? The "third" party telling sides what to do. Now we are going to have a federal judge making those decisions and at what expense? More will be spent working through this BK crap in the long run than was spent on negotiating contracts. We are ALL on the hook for that. The city, the PSU's, and the voters that put the mayor and council in place. We elected a council that was to act like our eyes and ears and look out for the "peoples" interests, look at us now. Wow.....

I never said it was only the PSU but they have a great deal to do with the finanical problems the city is now facing.

If you followed the antics of City Hall the Gang of 4 always put the PSU interests ahead of those of the Citizens of Vallejo.

Just the threat of not being supported in the next election was enough to keep prior City councils in line.

No matter what the issue, none of those who were supported by the PSU ever spoke out about the abuses such as Union Business Leave ,the cities used for salary comparisions etc.Instead they voted to give the PSUs whatever they wanted.

The IAFF recently put out a booklet titled "Surviving and Economic Crisis - A Hands-On Guide for IAFF Locals" that identifies problems, resources and strategies for responding when a crisis arrives. The booklet is so new that there is reference to the possibility of bankruptcy in Vallejo.
You shouldn't doubt for a moment that voice appearing on this board and supposedly independent voices would appear in the newspaper are doing so as part of a conscious effort to get the union's case before the public in the best possible light. Union leaders aren't stupid and they are battling every way they possibly can to protect their members from financial loss. Here is an excerpt of the strategy identified in the booklet around the issue of "compensation." There are also strategies around staffing, health benefits, retirement benefits, collective bargaining agreements, leave/hours of work.
"- Develop justifications for a compensation package, e.g., increased workload effectively decreases available staffing; responders now fulfill multiple roles in Homeland Security, EMS,WMD andHazMat response.
- Educate politicians and community leaders regarding elevated risks in the community and emphasize that such risks are met by multi-role fire fighters.
- Develop alliances: seniors, other labor unions, community associations, etc.
- Identify potential coalitions: labor, policy-makers, managers, etc.
- Explore administrative and legal options (grievances and injunctions) to prevent reductions.
- BE PREPARED TO LAUNCH A PUBLIC OR COMMUNITY GRASSROOTS CAMPAIGN TO BATTLE ATTACKS.
- Scrutinize other areas of government for perceived inefficiencies.
- Propose innovative programs to improve efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery (i.e.: EMS response)."
So expect to read more letters to the editor and encounter more apologists for the unions on these boards. What ultimately matters is proceeding in a court not too far away. Keep your powder dry folks. This has the potential to get more ugly but also has the potential to lead Vallejo to a new era of labor relations that is founded on sanity rather than mutual back scratching between unions and elected officials. It is about time...
Doug, do you have a spy on the inside at the FD? Yes, I believes you do!

The City owes no particular loyalty to the public service unions. Why would anything think it does? Those unions have a nasty history in Vallejo. It has been a long time ago, but one of the unions actually conducted a strike against the citizens of Vallejo as part of its hard-ball approach to getting what it wants. There are a lot of people around who remember those days, and at least some of them are in the CURRENT unions.

Instead of strikes, the unions now have the shelter of secretive, closed-door contract negotiating sessions with City staff and the City Council. Even the details of what was discussed and who said what remain a secret even after the RESULTS of the back-room deals are announced and the taxpayers of Vallejo are simply presented with the fat bill to pay. The citizens of Vallejo have no idea who was representing their interests--or if ANYONE was.

Hopefully the current City Council & staff can re-work the financial structure of Vallejo so that it can work, while retaining a quality City workforce in ALL areas, including fire & police. What they do is valuable and often heroic, but police public information officers should NOT be able to game the system to get paid over $400,000 a year in compensation. Any contract that permits such legalized theft HAS to be tossed out. It is disgraceful.

Oh Mr. crowbar, the purpose of Chapter 9 is to prevent lawsuits.
Hey Shrew, when it is all over and it will be. You cannot use Chapter 9 forever, the city is and will still be liable for any debt and pending law suits.
