Education is fundamentally important for every member of society.

Education is not a "civil right". That is simply a silly assertion.

The public schools in Vallejo are pathetic. Parents who care about educating their kids must consider private, church or charter schools as alternatives since our regular government run schools are so bad.

Wow three great articles about what is being done in our schools and then the constant posters that have something negative to say aout them. Maybe it's not just the schools, parents and children. Maybe the negative environment that surrounds these elements is what's wrong with Vallejo. The negative, annoying people who can't find anything nice to say about anything. What a wonderful environment for the children to live in!

Good going Vallejo school district. There are many ways to reach our children and show that we care. Keep it up. At least the school district is trying. Unlike some who merely exist in our city and contribute nothing to aside from the hot air.

I have to admit, when I read the article this morning and saw where the message of this forum was “Education is a civil right” my heart sank. As I sit here and think it over, however, I’m thinking there may be a new angle to explore. When my child was in Hogan, she would come home and tell stories that were almost unbelievable. Dope smoking in the halls, kids in class physically threatening teachers, absolute chaos in the classrooms. Some of this was probably a little exaggerated but its likely not too far off base. If we accept the premise that education is indeed a civil right, then we have many civil rights violations occurring daily in our schools. The chronic violators should be held to account. The difficulty is these violators are the students themselves. If we’re going to pursue this civil rights path then it should be pursued vigorously IMO. Violators should be punished and an awareness program instituted that educates the children about how unruly students are violating everyone else’s civil rights.

In my opinion, education is a privilage and a historically implied "right". The problem is that most of these youngsters are distracted from this privilage from a constant torrent of negative influences that parents have to compete with. Compare the examples of locals like CC Sabathia, Greg Howard, and E-40. Which one would you prefer your child emulate and which one are they actually most influenced by these days?

Great idea and program, but for some of these issues discussed, the school district/teacher/taxpayer should not have to take responsibility.

In the real world a visit to a private physician would be in order. Many of us have not had an ideal homelife when we grew up, however we had to work through it, called the "School of Hard Knocks" and through this process, actually became useful members of society without tangling with law enforcement etc..

Schools, please provide an education only! Make involvement of parents an even bigger must if their children do not want to fit in and create problems for all the other children willing to learn. Leave all other issues to the professionals.

I may have missed how many parents attended this event. By the problems we seem to experience daily, the line should have been out the door.
