Council to decide Wal-Mart's fate Tuesday
The fate of a proposal for a Wal-Mart Supercenter in Suisun City likely will be decided Tuesday night by the city council.

Let's see if anyone dying to have a Wal-Mart can put up any statistics, beyond tax revenues, for why this is a good deal. Look beyond the dollar signs and look at the improvements to the community.

I live in Vallejo and travel to the "normal" Walmart in Fairfield because I can't stand the Superstore. Too many people, never enough checkout clerks, the crafts section is a joke, and so is the auto section - they don't even do tires anymore. The superstore is all hype. I hope they DO NOT bring a superstore to Suisun, especially if they close the normal Walmart in Fairfield (like they did to us in Vallejo).

Personally I have been to the Super Walmart in American Canyon quite a few times. And have had no issue with it at all. Even speed at the cashier lines seemed adequate. Clerks appear nicer too! For all who are naysayers there are many who are still shopping there! Check out the parking lot!

George writes, "there are many still shopping there." Have you seen the quality of people this horrible store is drawing to our community? I have not been there once and not seen the police involved with something! The store may be bigger, but they have cut every section to less than half. The likely hood of you actually finding what your looking for is small... Just waiting to tell the City, "I told you so". It'll happen, give it time.

Erika, here’s something that should be noted: The concept of a “one stop shop” or supercenter is good for the environment. It has nothing to do with Wally world per se but having all or a larger percentage of your shopping list items at one central location saves carbon. Consider the stores we’ve been shopping at in Vallejo for the last couple decades. A typical shopping spree might include a drive over to Safeway, hop in the car and go to Payless, back in the car and over to a gas station etc. For each of these additional driving legs you expend more carbon. If you can save x miles and your transportation creates c amount of carbon/mile, the carbon emissions are reduced by xc when a supercenter can supply you with a variety of items. Supercenters are global warming fighters.

I appreciate Doug's comments on this topic.
A one stop shop is good for the environment, but is it good for business in the community? People go to Safeway, then maybe go to some locally owned businesses or restaurants, and all businesses are supported. If all business is supported the community as a whole improves, and the city can bank on revenue from more than one or two sources. How will business thrive in Vallejo if one stop shopping dominates? |
