The public safety has been rapeing Citizens of Vallejo for years. For the past 18 years, I've worked in public safety preparing criminal stats. hel-lo...crime is not on the rise and it hasn't been. I bet you that majority of Vallejo's firefighter and cops do not even live in Vallejo. I work in public safety in another County--we were so amazed how much the firefighters and police officer are overpaid then other surrounding Counties.

So, if you don't want little league fields or High School then keep your cops.

The city employees have been the largest source of revenue for the city the past few years. Turn away businesses and then turn the the employees for concessions. That has been status quo.

Carol is happy with layoffs. Sounds like she is a bean counter who has no clue what will happen in the city when you have no police and fire for protection

Check out the rhetoric on vib and see what the lunatics are ranting about.

Every city should strive to have their employees top paid. Thats the only way to attract quality people to work here. The salaries of the public safety is based on a survey of several cities the same size as Vallejo. They are paid good, but not over paid. The council agreed to those contracts, if they knew that they couldnt pay them out, they never should have agreed to them. You can't blame the unions for looking out for their people, thats what they are there for. Also remember, the public safety unions were willing to forgo the last raise they obtained in July. The city manager didnt want to do it because the unions wanted a contract extension, he advised the city council to give the raise, he KNEW what was going to happen if they did that, this is his way of trying to break the contract.

If the council would stop listening to the LOUD MINORITY and pay attention to the rest of Vallejo, they would start looking for business to bring into Vallejo,(LNG, WalMart, Etc etc). It isn't the LOUD MINORITY that elected them, that was pretty obvious by the results of the last election, they decided Pearsall had to go. Maybe Gomes will pay attention and start doing whats right for the entire city and not just her little special interest group.

If you would like to see what the City of Vallejo actually pays it's employees, check out the link above. Wow, and the rank and file of public safety has gotten the hammer for their wages!!??
Thank you Gina, that is an eye opener! No wonder you can not drive these people off with a stick once they are feeding at the public trough.
I will never ever vote for anything having to do with the School District either. No wonder there is nothing left for the kids after paying benefits like that. None of these people have any idea how the general population makes a living and is able to manage! Disgusting!

Carol,

Why so negative on the cops? You want to do their job? They can have their job. Who wants to work out in the cold, with idiots, drunks, people like you who hate them.

Not bad coming from someone who has been given a speeding ticket. They are doing a job that no one else wants to do. Now you trash them.

No wonder Vallejo is going under.

After reading the page with the pay our top officials make, why is everyone so mad at the cops and firemen. They need to go after the top.

$400,000 for city manager. No one needs to make that much money.

Looking at past practice, our city council also gives the city manager a pay off if he is fired, somewhere in the tune of $250,000

The fire and police departments have been “screwing the pooch” for years and now it will come home to haunt them. If you think this is bad, wait until you see the federal government do the same thing. WE ARE BROKE! This is the old rule of finance and it does not make any difference if it is a family, business, or government. When you have more money going out than you have coming in, you are in deep trouble. The federal government is almost $10 trillion dollars in debt and the federal debt limit has been raised five times since 2002. Our prescription drug giveaway along with Medicare, Medicaid, and SCHIP are out biggest drain on the budgets. This then tickles down to cities and towns.
USA TODAY reported in May 2006, federal, state, and local governments owe at least $57.8 trillion —$510,677 per household — for Medicare, Social Security, civil servant health care, and other obligations.
How secure are your secure are your health and retirement plans? Politicians at the local, state, and federal levels buy their votes with your money and you let them. Now cry about it when the taxes go up but no services are cut. How many of the fire and law enforcement departments are willing to have volunteers in their department to cut down on expenses? Not many.

No one who had a hand in this will take any responsibility whatsoever. Not past council members, not past mayors, not the unions, not the activists. It's always the other guys fault.
But who does the council seem to want to blame....the police and firefighters...that is exactly why they are leaving......their council hates them
