Another survey...

http://archpedi.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/abst...

"These findings agree with previous research indicating that smokers were significantly more likely to be heavy cannabis users than nonsmokers"

"smokers" = tobacco smokers in that sentence.

This survey also found that kids who smoked cannabis had good grades and were more socially-driven than those who did not. There was a definite negative correlation with those who smoked both tobacco and cannabis compared to others.

... Einstein didn't do so hot until he brainstormed the theory of relativity. He was a chump worker in a patent office until he published that. Einstein didn't follow the good grades -> great job -> discover theory of relativity path. If anything, Einstein was an example that true genius doesn't necessarily equate to good grades or good job performance. His life also lends credence to the notion that people don't "come out Einsteins," people are born Einsteins.

It has been proven, that any drug, or alcohol,(NOT JUST POT)can throw off the chemical balance in a teen, and cause these types of behaviors.
Where has this been proven? You can't just say something has been proven and expect people to agree with you. It has been asserted that adolescent alcohol intake affects the prefrontal cortex, limbic system, and white matter myelin... but not proven.

There are studies that show that the rat brain doesn't do so well after adolescent exposure to nicotine such as "Long-Lasting Cognitive Deficits Resulting from Adolescent Nicotine Exposure in Rats"
DS Counotte, S Spijker, LH Van de Burgwal, ANM …- Neuropsychopharmacology, 2008.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18580873

I would say that yet another reason that children shouldn't be smoking cigarettes is nicotine can cause a long-term cognitive deficiency.

The difference between research like this and research on cannabis is the government attempts to spin the research on cannabis to match their own agenda.

Compare the discussion of "Differential effects of delta9-THC on learning in adolescent and adult rats"

http://www.drugabuse.gov/DirReports/DirRep906...

With the abstract of the actual study:

http://cat.inist.fr/...

Notice that the government propaganda cites the important evidence as being that "adolescence is a period of heightened sensitivity to the neurobehavioral effects of THC." They fail to mention the next two sentences "However, there were no long-lasting significant effects on either spatial or non-spatial learning in rats that had been previously exposed to THC for 21 days. This developmental sensitivity is analogous to the effects of ethanol, another commonly used recreational drug."

That is, "no long-lasting significant effects" from 5.0 mg / kg of 2.5 mg / kg of THC for several days in a row. To put this is human terms, one must realize how much 5.0 mg / kg is in terms of human numbers. If the average human adolescent weighs ~50kg, the human equivalent of the rat dose would be 250 mg of pure THC. Considering that high quality THC delivers at most 1 mg per inhalation, the rat dose in human terms is around 250 "bong hits."

Habitual cannabis users can take some knowledge away from this study. Do not smoke 250 times for five days straight of you may not be able to make it through the corn maze on Halloween.

This doesn't suggest any long-term brain chemistry imbalance as you suggest has been "proven."

I should clarify that I think drunk driving is wholly irresponsible and that I don't think children should habitually use cannabis, tobacco, alcohol, or any other mind-altering substance. I think that the standard arguments in favor of prohibition sensationalize the effects of those things on individuals and society as justification for detrimental policies.

I cannot blame high-ranking government spokespeople for misrepresenting the truth as a method of defending government policy as that is in their job description:

21 USC 1703(12): "[the Drug Czar] shall ensure that no Federal funds appropriated to the Office of National Drug Control Policy shall be expended for any study or contract relating to the legalization (for a medical use or any other use) of a substance listed in schedule I of section 202 of the Controlled Substances Act (21 U.S.C. 812) and take such actions as necessary to oppose any attempt to legalize the use of a substance (in any form) that-- 1. is listed in schedule I of section 202 of the Controlled Substances Act (21 U.S.C. 812); and 2. has not been approved for use for medical purposes by the Food and Drug Administration;"

The blame rests solely on the Department of Health and Human Services and before them the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare,

I don't expect people to agree. I expect people to listen to their own common sense. When people put things into their system that is not meant to be there, it alters the balance of your natural body. You can agree or disagree.

It acts much in the same way as putting meth, pot,and nicotene into your body on a regular basis does. Different people's bodies react differently. I have seen kids regularly that have been affected in these ways.Com ing in with multiple problems ranging from brain damaged indeuced skitzophrenia, to depression, to physical illness. So I guess you are right. What I should have said was "I have seen it with my own eyes." Not "It has been proven."
Thank you for helping me to notice that.

This seems to be good info, you may want to check it out. It is pertaining to the response from Humboldt thug. It has to do with brain damage and chemical imbalance in heavy drinkers.

Says nothing about adolescent alcohol use leading to brain chemistry imbalance.

Adolescent rats exposed to alcohol do not have higher adult habituation rates than rats who are not exposed
http://linkinghub.elsevier.com/retrieve/pii/S...

Adolescent ethanol "peer pressure" among rats (perhaps this precisely explains human peer pressure?)
http://www.springerlink.com/content/110l7560r...

I have still not read any study that attributes casual or moderate alcohol use with any long-term health problems for adults or adolescents. Binge drinking and alcoholism are very different in this regard as those are more toxic practices. I've read that mere casual use of some inhalants (i.e. butane, toluene, gasoline) can cause long-term health problems.

The peer pressure among rats is quite enlightening if one considers humans to have basic mammalian instincts beyond their control. That is, human children who see other kids eating candy and fast food will consider those things part of a regular diet. The same goes for alcohol and the same goes for cannabis.

Good information about the insulin. I've thought about alcohol-induced dementia being diabetes of the brain given that so many alcoholics suffer from adult-onset diabetes.

No. It was referring to anybody. Not just kids. But if it can happen to a grown adult, imagine what it can probably do to a younger person.

If someone is wasted enough to get in a wreck, or give themselves brain damage then I am not sure if that is actually considered casual or moderate usage. And if there is a possibility of brain damage in adults, then I believe it to be true for kids as well. I as well as many others are sure that a lot of kids these days way over do it. Including booze. Not all are responsible, and I have met quite a few who now have permanent brain damage from drugs and alcohol. They are riddled with all kinds of different symptoms. I'm not trying to argue with you, just saying that it IS possible, and it HAS happened.

I was re- reading this and realized it sounded quite rude. I assure you that was not my intention. Also I had not caught the part about your post where you said it did not include binge drinking, as that is what I was referring to.
