The talk on here is the equivilent of people in a sports bar yelling about which team they support in the hockey game that's about to start. Real patriotism is about loving your country and your community and doing your part to make it better. It has nothing to do with waving flags and the forced reciting of nonsense. So you think that the pledge and honoring the flag is nonsense?

Forrest Gump once said "Stupid is as stupid does...".
I have no problem with these children not respecting the flag and, essentially, the United States, as personally repugnant as I might find that.
I do think that, if they are that dedicated to their non-compliant thought process, that they, and their parents, should not get patriotic holidays off of school and work. They should work on Washington's birthday (Presidents day), MLK day, Flag Day, July 4, Thanksgiving, etc.
Let them have their beliefs. I also believe the first missed holiday, they will be whining and crying about how they are "left out".

You are definitely entitled to your opinion, and I'm sorry you feel that way, but I do not believe that saying the Pledge of Alliagence is nonsense. God bless America.

Yeah.....patriotism is much more meaningful if it's forced onto someone, and if it's narrowly defined by whether or not you wear a pin or stand up while saying the pledge. I'd hate it if we defined patriotism by how people act to make their country a better place, whether or not they vote, what they do to help their communities, etc. That would be bad, bad.

Yeah......patriotism is much more meaningful if: One side attacks their country's leaders while at war, Encourage fools with no clue to vote by "promising them the world", Killing off future generations with abortion, Draining the Economy to support an Education system that doesnt educate too many, Creating "make work" for 1/3 of the population with Government Jobs, Calling criminals that enter the country illegaly "Immigrants" and giving them Constitutional Rights, Making some speech criminal based on the Political Correctness Infestation founded by Feminists, Revising history so it in no way reflects reality, but better fits the Political Agenda of one side, Destroying the culture by appeasing every Immigrant groups desire for Diversity. This is patriotic, I want you on my team!!

Do you think 8th graders really even know what it is to be partriotic?? I doubt it. They probably read some stupid article about how other kids sat down during the pledge or about how people question wether it should still be said in school and they thought they would be cool to sit during it. Let em choose wether they want to stand or not. They barely even know what it means. They will learn someday though and then they will wish they would have stood.
