National defense depends on our energy independance. Our so called friends in Saudi Arabia(OPEC)will curtail production at the drop of a hat inorder to keep prices climbing. I believe we need to do both, drill our untapped areas & develope alternative sources. What will our "friends" in the middle east do if we didn't want, or need, their oil anymore? Here is what I propose, Reverse technology like we are doing with our ethanol. Maybe they can turn their excess oil into food to feed their people!!!

Ok, let's say this guy is NOT just looking to make even more billions. Why would a capitalist like this give us some "news" on how to solve the oil problem that he received his fortune from? Unless you see him as a super patriot, he's just another guy making his pitch for $$$$.
I can't begrudge the guy for wanting to help us out here. We need the help. And he has some good ideas. What bothers me is he does NOT tell us that he is heavily invested in these alternatives and that if we adopt HIS proposals he will make even more billions. Again, it's free enterprise and that is fine, just tell the whole story that's all.
God Bless America.

Until someone can come up with a more viable and practical solution, The Pickens Plan makes a lot of sense. I personally would like to join his team. Time is waisting----Lets get going!

I'm surprised people can't see through this campaign. Yes everything he says is true. What he omits is that he needs right of way to build transmission capacity to major cities. By making this a big patriotic movement, he hopes to steamroll anyone who stands in his way of hanging powerlines. Most likely the next move will be to get a federal law to remove local oversight of powerline building. Even if he gives all his money to charity, he still likes to win first.

Remember when we start building nuclear plants ,coal fired plants ,wind farms, hydro plants, etc. we will NEED to build transmission lines. Fact of life in the energy business. The only alternative would be to put these various kinds of plants on the golf courses in the cities but you'd have to build new roads or more railroads. NIMBY RULES

Texas oil billionaire T. Boone Pickens wants the American TAXPAYERS to pay for his Wind Farms in Texas. This is such a Good Deal for America.

Michael: Regrettably, you can't join his team since you must have been educated in the most recent of MEA programs put forth. Time is wasting, not "waisting". Unfortunately, I deal with a lot of younger folks that misuse or misconstrue the English language. They do know how to put condoms on cukes and bananas however.

What I see now is the money going to people who don't like us, who may someday try to kill us. I much rather follow the money to a Texas oil man, someone who lives right here in the US, spends his money right here & even pays some(likely not much, lol) tax on it.

Local oversight of powerline building is already subject to Federal overide, if the Feds want it, it gets built.

Pickens is just another piglet jostling for a place at the public teat. If we really want to work towards less dependence on foreign oil, there are any number of other things we can do without spending a dime of tax money, starting with removing ill-considered prohibitions on oil drilling in ANWR, off the coasts, around the Great Lakes, and more. We can continue by streamlining the process for approval of nuclear power plants (all power plants really) and oil refineries.

Pickens' plan costs billions for little effect. What I've noted above generates billions in revenue and would have great effect. Which do you choose?

I would fully support Picken's plan and even buy stock in it if his idea is to REDUCE Government regulations preventing his ideas.
I cannot support his position of pressuring Go'vt to increase tax credits and requiring Gov't vehicles to use his product.

I'm not totally in agreement with T. Boone either but I'd be willing to bet that the price of oil dropping has something to do with T. Boone, Al Gore and all of the negative news in the United States about FOSSIL FUELS.

Behind the "Pickens Plan" is a stealth plan to mine water from the Olgala Aquafer to sell the water to cities on a highest bidder basis. The electric transmission right of ways would also be used for the water pipelines. Basically Picken's is trying to buy off the enviormentalists with the wind power. Google "Mesa Water".

I don't see any comments supporting the most obvious, cost effective and immediate solution. Reduce Consumption.

Also there was an opinion piece written by a couple of guys that made a strong argument for diversifying wind energy production. Use lots of small windmills so that existing infrastructure could carry the load AND spread the wealth out across rural America instead of funneling it all back to a few people like Pickens.

Whatever his motivation, I hope he can find ways to reduce the costs and improve the efficiency of the process and still be a steward of the environment. Having said that, even with the current subsidies, the technology is just NOT ready for prime time. Everything I've heard or read, says the cost per kilowatt hour is about 4-5 x's greater than coal fired/nuclear plant
. I don't want my electric bill to increase 400-500%.....

by first erecting tens of thousands of wind turbines from Minnesota and the Dakotas down to Texas to produce at least 20 percent of the country's electricity in 10 years.

Anyone else see the problem here? Seriously?

Lets see, we need to literally fill a strip of land between here and texas with these wind turbings and even when these things ARE built and operating they will ONLY account for 20% of our total energy use. And this is considered a viable alternative energy "plan"?

What a joke.

So how much does even just ONE of these things cost? How much does and actual farm of these things cost much less the total price tag of the project.(Oh, and do guess who's pocket will be open for the cash to drop into on this.) And even then. Once these are built. What are the operating costs? Maintenance and up-keep? Lifespan? AKA How many dollars to hire people to maintain these MASSIVE farms and when can we expect to have to replace all of these things with new ones. 10 years? 20? 100 thousand revolutions?

SO this is the answer.

Literally destroy thousand and thousands of acres of land to build these things.(Ive hear the avian wildlife is just ripped up by the things) then hire an army of people to maintain them and cross your fingers that they have something close to a "long" and economically viable life span.

Its no wonder this guy is backing these things. And he says it isnt about money? You eco-kooks and anti-capitalist liberals should be absolutely furious with this whole thing. Oh but thats right. When you see "green" initiatives you forget all bout that green it takes to run the things and actually make them work.

Much like your support of Obama and his economy crippling program promises.

Yet you call the Republicans "greedy" and only out for profits.

Funny how that works.

Great plan Pickens!!! I honor you as a free market businessman who is capitalising and promoting this plan. I disagree with the plan itself and in relation to the overall impact it will have on the tax payers but I cannot fault your efforts.

SW - precisely my point on cost and efficiency. Can't do it now because it's cost prohibitive and the foot print required to generate the equivalent energy of a coal fire/nuclear fired is about 125 x's that of the coal/nuclear plant - about 250,000 acres vs. 2,000. But, if we can improve the efficiency 100x's and significantly reduce the cost, then MAYBE it's part of the solution.

I've been reading and listening to your presentations "Mr. T". As an American, husband, father and former Technology teacher, now retired, and Army intell officer, your concepts make good sense. Whom ever wins this upcoming election must make it a priority to re-visit our energy policy and plans. Thank you for your work. I will keep in touch with your community visits and hope that you visit us in Western North Carolina.
