I have no doubt he feels guilty about it just as I would feel horrible guilt if my driving recklessly killed someone. But since when do we base sentences on how badly the person convicted feels? Mitigating factor yes but sole factor no. You are right Sarah D, if you had driven recklessly and killed someone, even though you would live with that the rest of your life it WOULD NOT impress a judge to give you only 30 days...in my case it impressed the judge enough to give the driver that killed my son NOTHING!!!! NO DAYS!!!!! So we should all be thankful that this "dad" got even the 30 days he got.

This is Bull, the man was not even hunting, he didn't even have a hunting licence. if you have no licence you can't hunt!!! Just like a car. I'm ASIAN and If i Accidently shoot my friend and killed him i would get life and you know that's a FACT even if i had a licence. They would just say "Why would you be so STUPID and even put you OWN kid in harms way". and than lock me up. THA MAIN FACT IS THAT HE GOT WHAT HE GOT because he is WHITE.

This person is nothing like the people your courts release to the streets daily. I do NOT know Klaseus, even though I know many people in our area. What you metro simpletons never will realize is that people like us live here to be away from people like you. This guy is not the man who pistol whipped the 80 year old woman, nor is he the Evans family thug that beat a man at Valley Fair protecting his daughter, nor is he any of the dirtbags I read about everyday on these forums. He made a horrible mistake, he will live with every breath he takes from here forward. If being stupid is criminal all the liberals in Minnesota would be in jail already,,, oh wait, maybe some are already and that's why they release drug dealers and rapists after a few months... You need to learn to know the difference between a criminal act with malice, and a horrible mistake. ok, rant over,,,,, next... What??? A crime is a crime, look at that ex Vikings player who put a bag over his kids head and the kid is still alive even he got the same jail time. The fact is that he had no licence, so how would you be hunting without a licence???? Your STUPID.

My reply was to inform the poster that this is not a thread about abortion. Abortion is legal. Getting high, going hunting while high and shooting someone is not. Whether or not abortion should be legal is a topic for a DIFFERENT thread, not this one.

Once again affirmative action for us white suburban males. We do not have to take responsibility for our actions and we traditionly under the sentencing guidelines. Just view the stats.
History of alcohol and drug abuse ignored. History of hunting illegally ignored.
He will be out just in time for Deer and Dove season. Great for him. He can go hunting and gofing with OJ and me next month.

Why not just start making a slap on the wrist the official punishment for murder?

Man, reading the article is actualy making me very mad. "Accidents do happen, your honor. There can be nothing gained by putting this man in jail," Flanagan said Accidents happen? Then why were his other charges dismissed? Those were not accidents.

Should we hold this person up as an "example" - no, but to basically tell him, "well, that's OK, just don't do it again". Can future cases of "accidental death" use this as an evidence to get lesser sentences? I understand this person's life is ruined. This is a tragedy. But we have to send a better message as a possible deterrant to those that would be just as careless in the future. Yes, the consequence in this situation is that the parents no longer have a son. I cannot fathom anything worse. But as a society, we have to have expectations for those that perpetrate a criminal act, intentional or not.

Anyone else would have faced stiffer charges just for the reckless discharge of a firearm, trespassing and hunting turkeys without a license that were dropped.
He recklessly broke a host of laws and murdered his son. Why do people have so much sympathy for this guy and the same ones want to lynch Sieferman? How is what he did any different from a mentally ill woman mixing alcohol and drugs. At leaset she had a sickness. He did it on his own.
Both have proven to be a danger to society and should be locked up for a long time!

Let's say the little boy was not even there. Let's say the man had been busted on private land, hunting out of season, and doing so under the influence of alcohol and pot. What would have been the sentencing for those infractions of law? Would they add up to 30 days? I'm with Sarah D on virtually everything she's posted in this thread. It's a tragedy that the little boy paid for his dad's poor choices with his life. I'm just very curious as to how much weight the judge put on the father's grief as a mitigating factor in sentencing.

From the article:
""Mr. Klaseus killed his own son, and he does have to live with the guilt and shame of that the rest of his life," Lannoye said".
******
I wonder if the penalty would have been different if (under the same set of circumstances) he shot and killed his wife and not his son.
