FYI -There are more white, or other (non-blacks) receiving government benefits.

I was bless to be able to work for 33 years. There were days that the pain was so bad that I would get home and cry and then go to bed early due to the fatigue. I would have applied for SSI and disability benefits, but it would have been a hugh paid cut. I hope that people that suffer daily get the benefits that deserve and need.

I don't understand how SS can deny people benefits when they can prove their medical problems.

WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN WHEN MORE & MORE VETS COME HOME NEEDING CARE? GRANTED THESE ARE SEPARATE SOURCES OF FUNDING. BUT THIS COUNTRY NEEDS TO START THINKING MORE ABOUT CARING FOR THE PEOPLE RESIDING HERE

THAT would be dishonorable, at least to me....i feel for you kacy...but the two of us rock!! we carry on because that's what a person does....not sit back and ride the system...
I think that's the one thing I've learned... you NEVER know what someone else is going through/experiencing. I've had friends who have said they were depressed and taken anti-depressants, and I've secretly kind of felt they didn't really need them - maybe they did or didn't - but the point is I don't know.

Mental illness is tough too because it's not like a broken leg where you just look at an x-ray and say "see, you have a broken leg."

I don't know where to draw the line on disability for people with Fibromyalgia or mental illnesses, but I know that I'm in no position to judge.

I look fine, and I act fine, but most days I'm in a lot of pain. Most people who know me don't know it.

I know a girl in Waconia who uses whatever drugs she can get her hands on. She goes to the doctor and tells him how depressed she is and gets disability benefits. You know what I'm depressed also, going to work every day knowing that this shining star is at home sitting on her rear and taxpayers are picking up the tab.

Yep, and there will always be people who cheat the system. Doesn't mean there aren't those who are truly disabled and need help.

Government-employers are the biggest joke in this country! They don't work full time; they work at limited hours at their desk, shuffling paperwork around like a good bureaucrat. They get paid at a six-figure income salary than normal employers do in the private sector. They get more time off on vacations than any other occupation in the United States. They cried at their own labor Union that they are not getting better treated for their own salaries. And they have no concept in human compassion, just to get hired by the state and federal government to become lazy and inept on the day job.

1. I think you mean "employees" not "employers."

2. How on earth can you make a sweeping generalization like this?

Great article and so true! so many people are in dire need of assistance and some don't even live long enough to get them. But the Government for some reason has adopted the immigrants/aliens and are paying a family of four $36,000 a year. Why can't they pay us the same thing after all we paid in out of every paycheck?
The Government just is greed bunch of butt holes and are just wanting us all to die off so they can put our money in their pockets.
Thanks for this article so that it can open some eyes.

I'm not sure how Obama would handle it, but that's a good question. Let's hope that he picks a sharp career SSA person to run the SSA (as opposed to a purely political appointee). Also, let's hope that Obama's appointee has the power to hire enough people (but with an eye toward efficiency, not just getting more warm bodies on the payroll).
I'm not sure what to make of the Hispanic situation. I thought that Hispanics had a problem with Obama (as shown by his performance in NV during the Dem Primary). While Puerto Ricans and Dominicans often vote for Blacks, Mexican-Americans and (non-Black) Cubans are usually not very fond of Black political candidates. Also, I thought that Mexicans liked McCain for not taking a hard line on immigration reform. It will be interesting to see how Hispanics actually line up on Election Day.
Yes, its an epidemic. Read the Wall street journal on the statistics.

Use Social Security for athentically disbled people? Nah. It's needed for drug abusers and alcoholics that can't (read: won't) work because they're too strung out. They get first priority. Oh, and people that are "depressed". C'mon. We're ALL depressed. Life stinks. Get over it.
Meanwhile, people that are truly disabled can't get a dime. That's the problem with the Federal Welfare program (which is what SSI is). Instead of going to the disabled, it goes to the lazy. And the case managers and social workers that work with these losers enable that. We should start investigating these case workers whenever they recommend a person to SSI for something that isn't a true disability.
"Social Security must examine each claim to ensure only the deserving get benefits."
Yeah, right. Druggies and drunks are deserving, but people that are mentally handicapped (retarded) or physically handicapped apparently aren't.
People with attitudes like yours is the reason why so many people with chronic depression don't get treatment and end up killing themselves.

Believe me you have never suffered from chronic depression. If you had, you wouldn't be so cavalier about it. I suffer from chronic depression and I wouldn't wish it even on clueless people like you.

And I do work. Some days I struggle against the urge to kill myself but I do work.

It seems SS disallows all claims until they see a lawyer sign the forms and then it is approved with a nice back pay award and a 1/3rd to the legal eagle!

I don't think the illegals are getting SS disability I feel that they are getting supplemental benefits due to their low income levels.

If our country is going to continue to give away our kids future safety net then we should demand that all income be eligible for SS taxation and not the first $90,000 or so a year. They shouldn't raise the maximum benefit either. If your making millions a year then you should be able to budget to help out those who are struggling to survive and actually be happy about it!

not a fair comment to judge all government employees this way, not that some don't fit your discription, but i am willing to bet they are the minority

Right on, Sarah, and hang in there. Like I said in an earlier post, the one thing I've learned through my own experience with Fibromyalgia is that you never know what someone else is going through mentally or physically. The only person who knows how much pain I'm in every day is my husband - I don't broadcast it, as I'm sure you probably don't your depression - but that doesn't make it not real.
