When the confusion gets really bad, its a cluster-"foul". ;)

My great-uncle was a WWII vet, and when he died, uncle sam provided a headstone free of charge. I thought that was nice.

A word to the wise for veterans, if you have mistakes to be corrected on your DD-214 you will need a DD Form 293 or 149. 293 if it has been 15 years or less since your discharge, 149 if 15 years or more since your discharge. To obtain copies of your service records you must send a SF Form 180 to St Louis for records. If you have your orignal DD-214, register it at your local courthouse, they will maintain it for you and you can always obtain a certified copy for your records.
