THIS GOES OUT TO MY BOULDER CITY !!!!!!!!!!

Video games turn kids into killers? Not so, says new book
Just because you play as a criminal doesn't mean you'll become one.
By Ben Silverman
While their digital pastime is often credited with eroding the state of contemporary literature, gamers have found an unlikely ally within the pages of a new book.
Penned by Harvard Med School researchers Lawrence Kutner and Cheryl Olsen, "Grand Theft Childhood: The Surprising Truth About Violent Video Games and What Parents Can Do" refutes common conceptions about the causal relationship between violent video games and violent behavior
In other words, playing a few hours of GTA IV will not result in your kid stealing a car, careening through traffic and gunning down civilians.
What I hope people realize is that there is no data to support the simple-minded concerns that video games cause violence," Kutner told Reuters News Service in an interview.

Their findings are a result of a two-year study of over 1,200 middle-school students. Unlike most studies set in sterile lab environments using psychological triggers, much of their data was collected by -- brace yourself -- actually talking to their young subjects.

The researchers did note a link between mature-rated titles and aggressive behavior, as a significant number of both boys and girls who played M-rated titles reported getting into more fights over the past year than kids who didn't play M-rated games.

However, Kutner and Olson point out that this simply demonstrates a correlation between violent games and aggression, not that one causes the other, suggesting the possibility that the kids attracted to mature-rated games were naturally aggressive to begin with.

Ultimately, "Grand Theft Childhood" advises parents concerned about their child's behavior to consider a wider range of factors than just their interest in violent games, including bad grades, too much fighting and, of course, obsessive gaming, so you might want to start trimming down those marathon sessions of Halo 3 when mom's around (or better yet, get her to play along with you).

here's the link so YOU can reread it yourself !

Melissa stop ruining a perfectly good, irrational, emotionally charged argument with facts.

How are people like Boulder City supposed to demand the infringement of other people's rights based on knee-jerk reactions when you keep killing their baseless assumptions with all those pesky facts?

Melissa...I am NOT UNDER YOUR POSSESSION (that TO MY BOULDER CITY..). Considering women like you would slap a man in the face taking possession of a woman. Considering I am a gentleman, I would only say, that I am NOT YOUR SLAVE.

Also your statement, I feel bad for your husband (or was it a EX-HUSBAND). I guess you like treating men like crap (So look out EREBUS..you wouldn't last a second with her...) She'd probably perforate your posterior with a 12 guage, just for not taking out the garbage!

Regardless of educational gobbledygook you came up with (and you must have spent hundreds of hours looking to top me..), yet the simple fact is yet again......you open mouth...insert foot.

If that isn't the case, then why are you SOOOOOOOO HUNG UP ON THIS?? What happened to that sentence you wrote a few days ago...

I agree with Boulder City on this one...Video games may not make someone go out and kill someone but it certainly gets peoples imaginations going. I know that when I used to play video games years ago, there were times I would get upset at the game or my heart would start beating really fast with an adrenaline rush from the fast pace of the game. You can't tell me that kids don't get a "rush" out of playing these violent games. They walk away upset and in the process get more angry as the game goes on...

I saw a news report the other night where kids as young as 13 were going into retail stores and were allowed to purchase M video games without being questioned about their ages. Yes we can blame the retail stores for selling such games to kids, but where are the kids going with these games? They are going home where mom and dad are either too busy or don't care what their child is doing. I saw some of the footage from these games and there is no need for such trash and disgust. The games are wrong and not needed in this world. Why anyone would want to purchase such filth is beyond me. No, I'm not an old fart either. But I do set standards in my household for my children to live by. My children both love video games but as mom, I decide what comes into my home. I wonder, also, why even adults would want to buy garbage like that. What is the need? Like someone said in an earlier post, we grew up with Atari and some of the games we played were awesome. No, they weren't violent (at least the ones I played) but they were fun and gave us the "rush" that we needed. Not the same "rush" that kids have nowadays because our old time games wouldn't keep kids these days occupied. They want more violence and more blood. Sick if you ask me. Where did they learn this? Why aren't parents stepping up to the plate and keeping their kids away from this stuff? If people stop buying it, it hopefully will go away. Otherwise, it will keep getting more and more disturbing and disgusting.

About guns...My husband did have a rifle for hunting at one time, but it was kept in the attic away from all children. That was years ago. Now I wouldn't allow a gun in my home at all. I don't see a need for them and have taught my children that they don't ever need them either. Yes, some use them for hunting which is fine, as long as they take care of them and secure them. But to the people that have them for other reasons, there isn't a need. The only other reason for owning one is to protect, which would mean to kill a person. And I know what you gun lovers will say. You will say that we own knives for cooking and they can be weapons as well. True, but we don't go out and buy knives for such reason. Guns, unless for hunting, are for killing people. Plain and simple.

Thank you Marie. While I am not against guns, it is the argument that they give. In fact in South Dakota, Senator Obama made the same statement, that the NRA uses this scaremongering tactic when such laws come up, rather than sitting down and talking about problems.
Furthermore, Ms. Melissa has mad the following statements to me, ridiculing me, using vulgar language, sexual harrasement, and a few other things I don't wish to go into to prove her point.
When people have to use a controversial video game to push a point across, one that promotes going to strip clubs, shooting innocent bystanders, and stealing automobiles, one has to ask where society is going. Any rational person (including most of the people who were in the moral majority..) would be aghast at such a game being made for kids. However a parent allowing their kids to play such a game? What does that say about our society?
If this is where are country is heading, we cease to be strong at home. If being patriotic in this country (because of our two wars that have costed this country greatly, and done nothing to protect us), means that we have to see our country erode from the inside out, then being a proud american, becomes rather tough.
It's all about values. Apparently Melissa doesn't feel that way. What is most troubling though.....is that you have to get nasty, irrational, if not expose possible mental issues over disagreement someone elses opinion.
That's how Germany got it's rise to power in 1933. Seems as if we may be heading in that direction!

I still would like to know why people buy such trash? What do they get out of it? I'm just curious to know what kind of people buy this stuff. And why in Gods name would they let children play it? Doesn't anyone have any sense anymore? I saw one game advertised on tv that shows someone getting sawed in half. Now please tell me why the heck someone would enjoy that? I happen to think its sadistic and people who enjoy it are nuts. Its bad enough that the movies now a days are as sickening as they are but now video games? What next? I'm afraid to find out.

Marie: It seems funny that parents are so desensitized to allowing their kids play a game that kills people indiscriminately, or go to a Strip Club...or Steal Automobiles?

Maybe going back 30 years ago would be a good thing. After all...we didn't have video games, and we had fun as a family. Things weren't perfect, but ok.

This is what happens when we must have a perfect world........our values get warped and stunted!

We should also ban all scary books, tv shows, movies and music. You never know when a moron or a moron's kids will get their hands on them, and we can't be too careful now can we? Edgar Allen Poe, Stephen King, Johan Carpenter, the Insane Clown Posse, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the Sopranos - it should all be criminalized as far as I'm concerned. We should all go asap to the local libraries, schools and video stores and protest until this filth is removed from the shelves, then pile it up and burn it on the town commmon!!!! Censorship uber alles!!!
Get a clue people. For christ's sake, it's a video game.

Is it me or do all the people that want GTA banned begin their statement with "A news report I saw..."

Hey Boulder City.... Have you played the game? Have you even seen it? Do you realize there are worse games than this? Where were you when Gears of War came out. Much much worse than GTA.

The problem with people like you, is that you simply hear what is on TV and feel you know the game and can comment on it.

Bottom line. Th game states is it 17+ and that is the audience it is intended for. I do support the playing of this game by minors. Definately not for them. But for the 17+ gamer, it sure is fun.

Marie: I will answer you, other than Freddy and Meh, because I think that I made it CRYSTAL CLEAR as to why I am against the game itself.

When a game that promotes going to strip clubs, killing innocent bystanders, and stealing automobiles is being put into the hands of kids, that have in some cases very little parental supervision, it teaches kids a warped sense of what is right or wrong.

Does the game say that it is wrong to do those things? If it did, it wouldn't have sold many copies of the game.

Furthermore, the other game that Freddy was relating to is a basically a science fiction type game. Big deal.

I have a game that I play that I fly World War II Fighter Planes. What it did for me, is to learn about World War II, and the equipment, and learn about aviation. So I shoot down the German Luftwaffe...and defend my country.

What does a kid learn from "Grand Theft Auto IV"? That crime pays? That it is OK to kill people indiscriminately? That going to strip clubs is ok?

If I had EVER played a game like that as a kid (and fortunately in my days as a kid..there wasn't such games..), my parents would have punished me.

Yet, haven't stole an automobile, or shot innocent bystanders, and I don't like strip clubs.

It's called values. Even as a DEMOCRAT, I have values (called common sense). Yet parents these days have some really bizarre sense of what is right or wrong..

The game is specifically marked as 17+, as in, NOT FOR KIDS!!

Again, it's NOT FOR KIDS!! It's marked and rated for adults only. And it's FICTION. Or are you admitting that you are unable to be able to tell the difference between real life and a video game?
Boulder City wrote:

Same here and I have played EVERY incarnation of Grand Theft Auto. Imagine that, I can tell the difference between real life and a video game without the nanny state passing a law to force it on me.

So clearly you need to step in and tell them how to raise their kids, because they're too stupid to do it right in your eyes. You must get laws passed to force your will on other people so they can't behave in a way you deem unacceptable. Yep, you're a Big-Government, Nanny-State Democrat alright.

Personally, I don't enjoy the GTA games, so I get nothing out of them. Not my style. But, I'm not so self righteous that I want to legislate my sensibilities onto others. These games are meant for adults, so even though they sit on the shelf at my house, my kids know their not allowed to play them so they don't. I not only can tell reality from entertainment and believe in freedom of expresson over censorship, but I also know how to be a parent. It's sad that some people feel they need the government to step in over a frigging game that's no worse than a large portion of the stories on the shelf at your local library. Please, get a grip. You take care of your house and others take care of theirs. And if an adult breaks the law by selling this game to a kid, or if a kid or adult is so stupid as to influenced to commit a crime by a game, then punish them harshly. If the parents are unfit, they can have a serving too. It's profoundly unfair to limit the freedoms of functional people due to the actions of idiots.
