What should be cut in the State is the full time legislature to part time. Think of the savings, not only in salaries, support staff, retirement, etc. but they would also have less time to think of ways to spend taxpayers money. THAT WOULD BE A GREAT START!

The only challenge then would be trying to find someone willing to do a job that does not provide a living, yet is demanding enough to prohibit having a full time day job.

Many other states seem to function fine with less than full time legislatures. In fact, Massachusetts is in the minority:

What should I cut from my budget to support Patrick's tax increase?

Patrick could start by cutting the $735 million in yearly wasteful spending he promised when running for governor.

JDF - I don't think that he cut $7.35 in wasteful spending (or did he cut it and as a reward used it to help pay for his new curtains).

So raising taxes is horrible, but raising FEES (the Romney approach) is OK?

Well there you go.

Patrick should raise "fees".

Preferably, YOUR fees first (since it's your idea).

Pay for what you use. If you don't use any services, you don't have to pay for the services.

My questions is why didn't the S&E interview any of the community and business leaders that attended?Patrick answered questions from business leaders. What were the questions and who asked them? Did any city council members attend and did any take an active role in this forum? I guess I can't expect much from Brandon Butler who still has the high school newspaper mentality. I'd like to know when the S&E is going to stop assuming the public wants to be spoon fed. I think the public is ready for solid adult reporting. This is another example of how shallow the S&E is when it comes to reporting the news.

Yeah, they do that up in Maine. Yet we have to do a 2 year budget, that in the second year, is in deficit. This year it was $190 Million shortfall. For Maine, that is a disaster, and there were cuts (by a DEMOCRAT).

Yet, they stuck one on beer/Soda/and wine too, that even some Democrats aren't pleased with.

However, GTBG, a part-time legislature doesn't change anything. The problems are the same, and yet the same problems don't get solved.

Also GTBG, Maine passed Term-Limits on Constitutional Officers, Governor, and yes even the legislators, and studies have shown, that it did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to change government up here.

Minnesota (I lived there 2 years, even knew a few legislators there) has a slogan "Land of 10,000 taxes." That with a PART-TIME Legislature.

So you lose AGAIN!

PS: GTBG, I am a native of Fitchburg (lived there 8 years), 22 years in Townsend, and 11 here in Maine (also have worked with one of the political parties, and legislative campaigns...so I think I am more an expert on part-time legislatures..)
