The fundamental issue is Santa Cruz's lenient (leftist) acceptance of the homeless. Why should the hardworking people of this town have to share our public streets with people who do nothing productive? This attitude over the last few decades has bred the problems we see today.
But in the drummers/congregators defense, they are mostly peaceful (a little stoned, perhaps, but who isn't?) and the sound of drums is really not a nuisance unless your within a 1 block radius, on a wednesday. But its a precedent...

Apparently these people think it belongs to them. In my opinion the people who say to jail the drummers or run them out of town are no better than Hitler trying to rid the world of the Jews. We all have a right to be here. The drummers are being targeted by the police because they don't look as nice as the you sad little rich folk. If you want a nice little white community to live in, move to Scotts Valley and leave Santa Cruz to the people who make a real difference in creating a society of acceptance and change. Why should we accept rude behavior, illegal activity and urinating in public? Downtown Santa Cruz s_u_c_k_s!

How about having some common courtesy to others? There are lots of open spaces in the county where the drummers won't bother anybody. Drumming, jamming, bagpipe playing in the middle of a farmer's market probably isn't appropriate. Although I have not experienced the drumming myself, I cannot comment on whether I would personally find it offensive (I love Taiko!). However, by the number of negative posts and complaints to police, apparently a good number of people DO find it obnoxious. If it were my group, I'd find someplace else to play away from others--more time to enjoy drumming, less time being harrassed by the police. That is, of course, unless their real motive is to make some sort of flawed political statement instead of enjoying drumming, which I suspect is their _real_ agenda. If their intent is a political statement, well then they're not doing much for their cause.

And who the hell cares about these damned annoying drum circles. Go down to the beach and play your drums and don't add to the noise pollution of the downtown area. Oh, and the next time you need the police just play your drum and hope for the best! Yep, I couldn't have said it better myself rangefinder. Thanks for putting it short and to the point!

Most average/normal people have a threshhold of tolerance. The Conservatives in this county have been pretty tolerant of the left. So much so that Conservatives have lost a lot (See UCSC Student Voting). I love to hunt yet if I went to a PETA meeting I am sure the PETA people will not be so tolerant of me if I want to teach the latest Hunting Tips and Gun Safety. These Drum Circle People are acting like a drunk patron who refuses to leave a bar even though just about everyone has had enough of their music(?). They did it to themselves. From now on anywhere they go people are going to want them gone. Neil Pert they are not! Harry Merkin

May I suggest a reading list for the drum circle, and other downtown denizens who seem to have forgotten that there are rules in society? http://charactercounts.org/resources/booklist...

Moike wrote: Santana Row, what Downtown should be... I'm just sayin' Santana Row? I think you're shooting a bit high for downtown Santa Cruz. Sure, it has the potential. At this point, however, even a downtown Campbell or Pleasanton would be a step up on the overall pleasantness/family-friendly scale. I've generally had a good time Downtown but I always feel on edge when I have the kids with me (and no, it's not my kids that make me feel on edge). Who knows what unpleasant surprises await Downtown? I was down in the other self-proclaimed Surf City, Huntington Beach, last weekend. A very pleasant downtown, open air environment. Bustling with people, no drunks, or homeless, or scary-looking folks. Still "weird" enough to be interesting, though. Then again, it wasn't Spring Break. Come on Santa Cruz, we call all do better. I'm surprised that the local businesses don't push for more improvements or band together to do it themselves. It would be good for all involved.

It is absolutely outrageous that the mindless drum beating IDIOTS!!! are still allowed in the PARKING LOT next to the farmers market. I cannot tell you the countless times that I have tried to drive past these zombies and or watched others try to pull out of the PARKING LOT. I have run out of tolerance for these self entitled A Holes. I hope they are cited every chance SCPD gets. If a crowd surrounds the police, the police should do whatever they possibly can to ensure their safety and the public's safety. As for Santa Cruz City Councilman Tony Madrigal, the abusively drunk womanizing ****, I hope this city population isn't STUPID enough to re-elect him.

The noise and crowd from the drum circle **** , and has become a public nuisance. Any pretense that the drum circle is part of the market is shattered when drummers post here or over on Indybay that we can shop elsewhere.

Sounds like an oxymoron to me. Acceptance AND Change do not go together. Acceptance OF Change is a different statement, but that is now what you wrote. My experience is that the liberals in Santa Cruz are more anti-establishment than tolerant of others. This attitude led to the demise of the 60's counter-culture movement which ultimately overstepped its bounds and turned to oppression and violence against the establishment, not tolerance as its founders preached. It has now manifested itself in wonderful Santa Cruz and become the cancer, that rots from within, this great city by the ocean.
