Here's an idea - how about filling the beds we have in this town before adding a massive project and conference space? Most lodging properties will tell you conference bookings are down in addition to occupancy rates. Corporate culture is changing for the long haul - companies will be holding conferences in places like New Jersey over perceived luxury destinations like ski resorts.

Here's another idea.
Build more beds BEFORE all the current ones are filled, so that when current ones ARE filled, there will be space for other tourists to stay. If more stayed near Old Town (instead of DV or The Canyons), guess whose businesses benefit? Of course, everything is down, currently. Things change. Corporate culture may be currently cooling it on the lavish displays, but it's not like resort desitination sales meetings are a thing of the past. It takes just as much money to fly a national staff to NJ as UT, and the room rates are the same. Summer meetings in PC would be awesome for both attendees and local businesses. Your assertion regarding corporate culture is highly questionable if one considers the longer view (like a year or three out). Most businesses are not much in the public eye, and will continue to meet at plush resorts, because these are the only ones big enough to accomodate everyone. I know JP Morgan cancelled their DV meet this year, and it hurt. You think they will never come back? Let's just see about that. If the Sweeneys want to bet on a prosperous future, and start building now, then they will be prepared if the economy comes back in three years. They will also provide a helluvalot of jobs now, and in the future. Do any of the anti-Treasure people care about that? More jobs for Parkites? Why would you want to block a major jobs program, when this is the most needed aspect of any economic recovery? It's a great location for tourists, workers, and convention goers. Is all this antipathy coming from the residents of two streets, which border a ski resort, and are only complaining about traffic? I guess there are a few who are also opposed on aesthetic grounds, but why should their opinions count for anything significant? I don't even like the way my own house looks, so I don't have much authority to tell anyone else just how they should go about appealing to my personal sense of architectural style. Or do some people think their personal opinions are so important that they should become public policy? I am grateful to acknowledge the gifts of open space and the Town Lift Bridge which the Sweeneys have already made to the city. Anyone else? Anyone care about the jobs, and increased tax base? |
