If there was any doubt left, Senate Majority Leader Daniel Webster declared Central Florida's bid for commuter rail dead Friday.

Wow, another reason to move out of Orlando. This city seems continuously to take one step forward and two steps backward as far as progressing toward becoming a modern big city. How sad.

Ridiculous. At a time when people do nothing but complain about gas prices, the legislature kills the one real chance this region had to find a solution. I would like to thank South Florida and the NIMBY fools in Lakeland for being part of the problem, not part of the solution.$6 a gallon for gas, anyone?

I still can't believe that Bush killed the train between Orlanda and Tampa. And, now a second shot at the 21st century and we blow it. All that matters is our politicains continue to recieve a paycheck, health insurance, and pension, why we are left out to dry.

The legislators that killed commuter rail should be ashamed. Transit in central Florida is in sorry condition and will only get worse. We need people in office that can provide forward thinking solutions and look at the big picture. Maybe they were distracted by truck nutz.

FTW commuter trains

Millions spent to tell us the obvious: We don't deserve trains.

Just spoke with Webster's office...these quotes were taken out of context. Negotiations ongoing. This was told to me less than 5 mintues ago. Not saying it is gonna pass, but not dead quite yet.

Any rail plan that uses street-level tracks is flawed, and should be discouraged. Trains using the same altitude as cars is an idiotic idea, doomed to create more problems, and solve none.
.
The best idea is an elevated, electric monorail system that would glide quietly...not interfere with car traffic. Think Disney monorails, but on a much larger scale.

Wait, you mean the Sentinel may have jumped the gun and gotten this story wrong?

I'm shocked.

We know you've been working hard to get SOMEBODY a bunch of graf-- uh,contributions, for the past couple of years. Sorry it didn't work out. See, the Bush brothers have spent money foolishly the last SEVEN years, and there just isn't enough to go around.

How many people would have used light rail a day ? 9000 ? AND FOR THAT, WE'RE GOING TO SPEND $650 MILLION BUCKS? PLUS ???

Get real. Even Republicans can't spend money that horribly, and hope to stay in office. Not with schools and services in such rotten shape.

Sincerely,
.

Way to go Mr. Webster. The biggest boon doggle I've ever seen. There are a few sane people left in this world after all.

The unspoken agenda for commuter rail everywhere is how do you pay expenses once it is built. South Florida wants to add a $2 per day tax on rental cars. The cities of New York and Washington want billions from the Federal Government to do maintenance and buy new commuter train cars. Subway fare in New York is $2.00 one way yet New York wants to charge cars $10 per day to drive into Manhattan. Other cities want to add additional fees to their parking garages. It is always the auto drivers who do not live near commuter stations who pay additional fees and taxes.

Never will politicians allow commuter rail users to pay an adequate fare to maintain or upgrade the system. Until commuter rail is set up to be self sufficient on rider fares it needs to remain just another bad idea that does not get built. If it was such a good idea, why won't Disney let it on its property?

Why in the name of "REASON" doesn't this news paper start advocating opening up the transportation at OIA ?

FACT: There must be on demand mini-van service and bus service TO and FROM the airport. Check out Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York etc. Whats available is nothing more than "AN EXTORTION RACKET" allowed by the city. Why can't the Sentinel be a muckracker for the citizen instead of a sycophant to the cab companies and mears ?

Yeah, okay, and when exactly is all this renegotiating supposed to take place? The legislative session is almost over. Special session? Right. And it was my understanding that there is a time limit on the federal funds that were set aside for this project. No federal money, no commuter rail.

Nice to see that the politcal bickering in Florida continues. In a state where votes can't even be counted properly why should it surprise anyone that a sensible idea like a mass transit system that could help cut our dependence on foreign energy supplies would die?? I am beginning to think that we should disband the state legislature, sell off Tallahassee to Alabama and let Disney run the state. At least the Monorail would run on time.
