Good news all around except that Castillo is starting "baseball activities". Mets need him as much as they need Willie back!

This is how the late Rod Serling might have told it: "Mike Pelfrey, Major League pitching flop, was headed toward that limbo where all the desperate reside, until a chance meeting with that mysterious stranger on a starless night. At the signpost up ahead - next stop: The Twilight Zone!"
If not the Twilight Zone, what, then?

They are lookin' more like the over-achievers of 2006, against teams the last few weeks none of whom have been playin' a good brand of ball.
So, before gettin' excited, let them continue this run, to include series wins against other hot teams.
Then, in mid-September, check the standings, and hold off the celebration until they mathematically clinch.

I think Jerry will play whoever he's having success with. Castillo will get starts when he comes back, sure. As an 'interim' manager, Jerry is handling things well. I don't think he'll have a problem motivating people. If Luis doesn't produce, I think Manuel will platoon things.....at least.

Ken is right: one of the big changes between Willie and Jerry is that Jerry is willing to bench the big names for under-performing. Same goes for putting people in a batting order that reflects their actual--not expected--production. Kudos to Jerry; he knows how to work this team. Mets should drop the 'interm' label.
I don't see any need to get someone at the trade deadline, though. Maybe this is just built up for drama's sake, but believing that you're just one more role-player away from perfection is a bit unbecoming, especially for a team with the Mets' payroll (and depleted farm system). The Mets are winning with what they have and should be proud of it.
Thanks to a pitching staff that's finally finding its way and Delgado's torrid stretch, they are a complete team. In the outfield, Church is going to come back and Tatis is solid this year. Chavez has been holding down the fort admirably.
The Mets' continued success revolves around just two questions. 1) Will the pitching stay lights-out (or at least solid)? 2) Who will step up into the slugger role when Delgado inevitably cools off? NEITHER of these can or will be addressed by making a trade, at least without selling the farm (literally).

first of all david, sanchez has had only two bad games recently and hasn't played too bad in his past maybe 8 starts...he isn't struggling and they wouldn't pressure front office for a trade on two bad outings.

What other hot team?
The Rockies and Giants who have won 3 in a row?
The Mets are 11 and 4 against them.

Sorry Dud but the Mets who had a 10 game winning streak, currently have a 3 game winning streak and have gain 9.5 games in the standing in 6 weeks and are in first place because of all of the above, are the hottest team in the NL and they cannot play themselves.

In the mean time worry about your Phillies who are slipping in some big time Du-Du.

Another nice job by Pelfrey. I'm not the least bit surprised because I've been saying all year that they just have to run the guy out there every 5th day and give him an opportunity to prove himself. They did and he has!!!
Hey Todd-big night and an exciting night for both NY clubs. Hope you enjoyed the Mets game as much as I enjoyed the Yanks game buddy. The added bonus for me is the trade the Yanks pulled off!
OK, both teams need to repeat on Saturday and just keep this thing going!
Enjoy buddy and be well!

I like the starters to hold up. Maybe not lights out, but; I think we are finally seeing the staff we thought we had, with Pelf pitching like Pedro. AND if we keep pitching close to this, that'll make things easier for Pedro coming back.
The Delgado question, thats a little more dicey.
Beltran? Not like Delgado in power, but hot?
I think we can be OK.

The over achievers of 2006 had El Duque and Old man Glavine as their best pitchers most of the year without Pedro and they STILL ran away with the divsion. The over achievers also swept the Dodgers with two unproven pitchers in Maine and Perez and took the Cards to a game 7.

The starting pitching is way better this year and the team is finally hitting on all cylinders.. the Phillies on the hand have horrible starting pitching and keep in mind they won last year because the Mets gave it to them. Sorry no gifts this year..

Someone said Sanchez has pitched good in the past, just not the last two outings, or woopins I should say. If Jerry follows his rule of playing the hot player and benching the cold, then Shanchez needs to be sent to the minors for a few games till he can prove he wont load the bases without getting an out.

So no effort to get Nady back (after the WORST trade for Ramon Hernandez like EVER)-- Minaya apparently makes ZERO effort for Nady this time around.

LEts see.....Minaya and Wilpon are COMFORTABLE with a penant race run with:

1) Fernando Tatis (no comment)
2) Damien Easly (better for a bench)
3) Ryan "No Go" Church
4) Pedro "No Va" MArtinez
4a) Orlando "No Va" Hernandez
5) Brian "Is this a bat?" Schneider
6) Mike "Lights Out?" Pelfrey
7) Ollie (Dr. jekyl Mr Hyde) Perez
8) Etc. Etc. Etc.
