What a convenient way to get rid of the undesirables. Manufacture another pseudo-pandemic and kill off the old and infirm. Smacks a little of WWII Germany if you ask me.

The article clearly states who will receive care and those are:
People older than 85
Those with severe trauma, which could include critical injuries from car crashes and shootings
Severely burned patients older than 60
Those with severe mental impairment, which could include advanced Alzheimer's disease
Those with a severe chronic disease, such as advanced heart failure, lung disease or poorly controlled diabetes

Perhaps you should read a little more carefully; I copied the following from the article:

Those out of luck are the people at high risk of death and a slim chance of long-term survival. But the recommendations get much more specific, and include:

# People older than 85
# Those with severe trauma, which could include critical injuries from car crashes and shootings
# Severely burned patients older than 60
# Those with severe mental impairment, which could include advanced Alzheimer's disease
# Those with a severe chronic disease, such as advanced heart failure, lung disease or poorly controlled diabetes

I think bso1 needs a lesson in sarcasm..

so, everyone thinks first come first served is the best way instead?

Should they generate a list of who gets it first instead?

They are talking about pandemic influenza. During the pandemic in 1918, 50 million people died.

Pandemics are caused by new viruses - no one will be immune. Government plans assume 30% of us will be infected. The rate of infection could be higher.

At this point, the H5N1 virus appears to be most likely to cause a pandemic - right now its fatality rate is over 80%.

The list is simply an attempt to focus care on those most likely to survive.

When medical resources are scarce, the only ethical thing to do is to treat those most likely to survive.
