It is so true that we as a society do not teach our children to respect adults, especially teachers. So many of the discipline methods and tricks that were used on us as kids are no longer accepted in the classroom because it might hurt their self esteem or worse yet you might sued. My parents would have never gone straight to the top, but rather would have talked to all the appropriate parties. There's no communication in our society and everyone wants the fast solution. It's ridiculous that it's the teacher in trouble when at this point the signs point to the child initiating the situation. I'm sure the kid is at home eating ice cream and playing video games right now. I doubt he got grounded. It's ridiculous that this is happening in elementary school. I fear these kids getting into the real world.

welcome to society, people. both parents working jobs, not ****,e for the kids, placing them in daycare, or w/ a sitter. no interest from parents in child's school / personal / freinds' lives. i am glad she resigned, because she doesn't have to put up with this BS any longer. every president, and their wives Always talked / talk about being the 'education president,' so look where that's got us. if it doesn't Immediatley affect those in position to change the ways things are, then they dn't care. who cares about the future of kids? our gov't? parents? society? hmm...i wonder why kids join gangs...because they feel ACCEPTED! wake up america, this IS your Only wake up call.

It is sad when things like this happen; but sometimes this children are agressive and physical and the school system usually offer little protection, that is until is too late...

I work in a public school in Virginia. Sadly this is all too true when dealing with students. They have no respect for teachers or administrators. They talk back and behave in terribly disrespectfully. Granted this is not all students, but in my seven years in the classroom, I can honestly say that the number of students who behave badly has grown by leaps and bounds. Bottom line: there are no consequences. Suspension is a free day off from school, end of story. Parents simply need to take back their homes. They need to set and enforce rules and limitations and make it known to children that ADULTS are in charge. I see kids day in and day out acting as if they DARE an adult to question their right to misbehave. To put it mildly, it makes me sick! I have no doubt that this teacher was merely trying to protect herself. It'll be nice when the powers that be finally understand that test scores are useless when the students are out of control. There are NO student behavior guidelines in No Child Left Behind.

I would hope that schools could teach better English than that, but maybe it's time to start saving for private education for my 2-year-old.

Before slamming the lack of the 'comma' between 'passage' and 'I', it was there when I submitted. The comment system seems to have eaten it somehow... Odd.

The scary part is that nearly six years ago i attended this school and she was my teacher for history, i saw her nearly everyday. She was such a nice teacher, im pretty sure that the full fault of this is of the student's because i still remember at that school there were some kids who could have been mistaken for monsters. Poor Ms. Waugh.

Only ONE question should have been asked here: "Did you hit the teacher?" If the answer was YES (which we all know in truth that it was), the student should have been GONE. We ALLLL know he is lying. Kids ALWAYS make up lies to cover their guilty little tails.
What the hell is wrong with parents and school administration these days??? No wonder people don't want to be teachers!

I think it is a sad day in America when a teacher can not go to school to teach students and not be assaulted. You have all of these student which do NOT have any home training. Parents that have kids which are out of control. I think the teach should bring charges against the student and seek legal action against the school systems. I am not a teach and would not want to with these kids today which does not have any respect for anyone or anyting.

Touche for all the comments favoring and behind this teacher. The parents probably think "their little angel can do on wrong." Sounds like the child is running this home. If he is out of control now, he'll be in the juvenile system by age 14 or come up against someone, who is bigger and worst than him. Then the parents will have a huge medical bill or be burying him standing before millions crying how "the injustice done to their "little angel." No wonder the younger generation is dwindling; at this rate there will be a gap between 16 and 30. I hope the school administrators, school officials, her lawyer, and the students testify that the disruptive, trouble-making child escalated and the teacher was defending herself. There is no question in my mind she acted in self-defense.

This is another sign of police misconduct and excessive use of power by the current Fairfax County Police Department. A prima facia case of abuse of authority and false arrest if I ever saw one.
Seems like the Fairfax County Police Department has some kind of hatred for the teachers of the County. I mean they willfully killed the young teacher's aide Ashley McIntosh in February of this year and now they falsely arrest this teacher without probably cause.
The police department needs to be federally investigated and either reinvented or do the proper thing and disband the police department and return the law enforcement duties for the county to the Sheriff's Department with a popularly elected Sheriff.

And we wonder why we can't get teachers ... what happened to taking responsibility for your actions - hey Mom & Dad, make your child accountable or you will be very sorry down the road. I think Ms. Waugh should sue that family! Kids today at that age are disrespectful and it is the parents fault.

It's a shame that a teacher has to defend herself from a student. The laws have made it so that the children rule!! You can't correct them, you can't raise your voice at them and you definately can't touch them. When I was in school over 35 years ago, teachers could paddle the students if they got out of hand, neighbors could correct and/or spank children that were doing something wrong, and that child got another spanking when their parents got home. What has the world come to now!!!

It's a very sad situation on both parts. The child has no discipline or love in the home because the parent(s) cannot control the child and the child is the one that runs the household, and they in fact were probably elementary school drop-outs, and have a hatred for all schools and faculty members, and the teacher, bless her heart, she merely was only trying to do her job. She probably screamed out for help, and it was just too late. If this incident happened at 1:00 in the afternoon, what did the administrators do with the child? Was he suspended and as a result, the parents became upset and called the police, or were the administrators ever contacted? I did not know that a school employee could resign before all of the facts were presented, I thought it was investigated first, and then something was done after the investigation. Hmmm...something is wrong with this picture.

These students need to be stopped. Kids are way out of control in our society. The parents are not helping this situation either. I have students who don't even have a bed to sleep in. They go home every night and they sleep on the floor. I hardly have any students who have parents still together. There are administrations out there that when a kid brings a knife to school and shows it to other students, that student only gets one day OSS and one day ISS. So we are saying that you won't get punished hard if you do something wrong. The students have a different last name and the mother and father both have different last names and remarried. If a kid is getting this out of control, they deserve to be stopped. This kid wasn't even hurt. They should ask the class what happened, and go by that. No a teacher should not hit children, but children need to be respectful then. Yelling, swearing, or physically hurting your teacher should not be ignored, and it is, at least in the school I work in.

I am a Cameron parent who has had two children taught by Mrs. Waugh. My first experience with her was over 8 years ago with my GT son. No problems. My second encounter was last year with my daughter and it was a nightmare. I noticed a rapid decline in Mrs. Waugh's teaching techniques. She was a less-than-involved teacher. She made disparaging remarks and degrading comments to my honor-roll daughter (I mention this only to enforce that this is NOT a troubled or problem student) and they were hurtful to her self-esteem. She came home many nights crying and was sick many mornings not wanting to go to school. I brought it to the attention of Mrs. Waugh and the administrators and it no longer continued but I truly believe it was because I confronted her about it and I involved the administration of Cameron. While I think it was hasty on the part of the parents to contact police directly I certainly don't think that they were wrong in taking action. It is the word of the teacher against the word of the student and frankly I believe the truth lies somewhere in between. I know last year during class, Mrs. Waugh allowed two girl students to physically fight in class while she sat there. It was only until it got out of hand that she told another student to "hit the button" to contact the front office. I have heard this story from my daughter and several of her friends. I also find it incredulous that Mrs. Waugh, who was supposedly defending herself, would resign just like that! Sounds fishy to me...I frankly have felt over the last few years that Mrs. Waugh was not as satisfied with teaching as she once may have been. I noticed after having her own children that her dedication to teaching had declined markedly and I often wondered whether or not she was depressed. I am certainly not a Doctor but I do have a history of depression myself and I recognize the obvious signs. This was an unfortunate event and it brings unwanted attention to a school I moved into this county just to have my children attend. I agree with a lot of people on this post...there needs to be more information gathered before any decisions are made. Unfortunately, my experience with this particular teacher has me shaking my head saying, "I am not surprised."

I wish someone would even think about assulting my child....I have alot of pent up anger!!!!!! Oh well......and we wonder why some kids have no respect for authority. With parents like "VAMOMMA" there's no wonder some of theses kids act the way they do. And hey, VAMOMMA- judging by the way you spell and your grammar maybe you need to go back to elementary school. Maybe even release some of that pent up anger and beat up a few teachers while your there ... LOL .... what a lowlife ....
