Very sad. I am terribly sorry for this man's family. As I rider, I have to think this man was careful and experienced (hopefully). Taking a tumble in the sand dunes is fairly common--more so than when riding in dirt because of the soft surface. However, sand is very soft and falls are usually accompanied by laughter. Still, there is the rare possibility of taking a longer, harder fall, and riders must be wary of drop-off in the dunes. Riding with caution eliminates this risk, but occasionally you can get surprised. I have never even been injured riding in the dunes, and I figure the possibility is one in a million. But, with 2.1 million visitors per year at Oceano Dunes (most of them that don't ride very far or hard), it could happen to anyone. I hope this man was doing what he, and all of us love--experiencing the magnificence and wonder that nature provides and loving life!--SLORider.com
