They should be charged a fee. Not a punitive amount, but just enough to make people more mindful. Like carrying a flashlight! I wouldn't object to paying something for being rescued.

They should not only pay for the time & effort of thr Rescuers, whether it's a token fine, or the whole shebang, but also charged with tresspassing.
That's Boy Scout property, and not MMWD.

Lost near Fairfax?
Couldn't they have just walked towards the marijuana smoke wafting from the town?

We let white males die every winter in San Rafael. Yea, those people you try not to
stare at when ordering a triple cappuccino at Starbucks in San Rafael, but the wheels
fall off the spokes when one of our privileged goes missing. Pathetic society we reside in.

If you read this and your a narcissistic parasite your next three years will be filled with
disappointment: remember this when getting that ticket while sleeping in your car.
There's one way out of this spell--go to church for a year.

For what--our "finest" are doing absolutely nothing to begin with. The chopper was overkill, but the pilot loved the hours.

Hmmmm.....that was tax money well spent on those shiny new vehicles purchased by MCS. Wow, I never realized that so many people got lost hiking, I'm just glad that I get to pay for their bad decisions by supporting "search and rescue" teams as the economy collapses. Great job boys, you are true hero's.

Yes, well put. It always amazes me how unprepared people are. With no situational awareness, no provisions, no GPS, nada. People nowadays go more prepared to Starbucks, than into a wilderness area they know nothing about.

Tell The Sheriff it's his job and to just go do the job and not comment on how he feels about it. He Tired of finding people that get lost, Maybe he is tired of getting a paycheck from the county too! Does he think they got up in the morning and said hey, let's go bug the marin county sheriff and get lost today! Can't wait to meet this guy in person and tell him how i really fell, What a jerk! Hope everyone is has a great week!

Marin County Sheriff's Lt. Bruce Baker said "We had two on the Dipsea Trail on Thursday and two more on the Dipsea Trail on Friday," Baker said. "So, we're getting a little tired of it."

Exactly Bruce, exactly my sentiments. It's his JOB, period. I have never heard someone in his position and authority whine about these things. Sure, I understand his sentiments, but professionalism doesn't entail bitching about these things to the media. Hey sheriff, I appreciate your job, we all do, but show some class?

Agree with several of the comments regarding the Sheriff...It's part of his job description to do search and rescue. Sorry you actually needed to fulfill your job description buddy!

Regarding the lost hikers, they should have stayed on the trails in what appears to be unfamilar country, they should have started heading home well before dark. DUMB mistakes. They should get slapped with the SAR costs!

I've spent a lot of time at Tamarancho. It's an easy place to get lost in after dark. It's steep, has heavy vegitation, and short lines of sight. After dark, a map doesn't help much. There's not much use for GPS except as a toy to play with. Unless one takes a waypoint, gets more lost and compares the new position to the old. Most users can't even do that.

Tamarancho and the Scouts...BSA has been terrific stewards of that land, they should be thanked for allowing such open access to the property. An absolute benefit and generous benefactor to the area!

They should pay the entire amount of the rescue effort. Taking your cell phone but not taking a flashlight? I went hiking in the late afternoon yesterday and made darned sure I had a flashlight (and extra batteries) even though I didn't plan on staying on the trail after dark. These are our tax dollars, people!

You're correct. Remember Moronites----more taxes=less money for Starbucks, gas in the Range Rover, no chai scones with maple syrup, a day of shopping at Banana Republic!

Really? What are the odds of all these people getting lost 3 days in a row? What are the odds this is a fake story or staged event to justify police "search and rescue" budgets? I don't believe a word government says so I'm going to believe the latter. This is all fake.

I think it's asinine that a Marin sheriff is quoted as saying "we're getting tired of it". Yes, stories like this remind people to be better prepared, but accidents happen...This is the job you chose; remember?
