I bet that the other two Pier Ones in Novato and Corte Madera will close soon - they just don't want to put us in a total panic yet that the retail market in Marin is headed into the toilet and it has just starting shaking out. I already predicted a long time ago when this whole thing started w/the economy, that several places would close on Fourth: Papyrus, Caffe Trieste, Shoes on Fourth, Beverly's Fabrics. I think the next victims will be Smith and Hawken's huge retail store at Strawberry, more local stores and eateries on Fourth St in San Rafael, high-end boutiques in downtown San Anselmo just to name a few. See's Candy and Bev Mo have managed to survive and always seem really busy - nothing like the comfort of chocolate and wine when times are tough (or when they aren't!)

Just check out all the for lease retail space in San Rafael that has been empty for over 18 months now. San Anselmo is seeing closures as well.

For some reason the Pier 1 story links to this thread.

Pier 1 in corte madera is always slow almost never anyone in there. I do not like the layout either.

The Northgate mall sucks now. Even with the remodel they are trying to make it look too big for the space it almost loots industrial now. When they open it up no one will have the money to open up a store. LAWL fAiL! bad time to remodel

I went to the store yesterday hoping for a deal and there are none to be had as of yet. The 'big' mark down is 20%, not so big to me. So I'd say wait to go for another week or so when the deal really start happening.

Of the 3 stores in Marin, the Northgate 1 store is the best. What a shame that they're having lease issues. The Novato store is a waste of space- terrible inventory and they never seem to 'switch it up' as the other Pier 1 stores do. I love how the Northgate store always seems to be transformed everytime you visit. I'm ready for this crappy economy to turn around. How about you?

I don't think marin's retail market is going to go down the toilet. the bad economy has hit everywhere but marin is one of the places that isn't as affected as some other cities. And the pier one that is closing is closing only because the other locations in marin are too close. plus, well known retailers are also starting to begin to occupy northgate mall. and during a bad economy a few places are expected to close down. like i said before, marin's retail is not going to completely go down the trash.
