So, the state still gets a full cut, and the business's cut each others throats to survive. How thoughtful of them!
Thanks, but no thanks. I'll still be going to NH.

Butt break
Smokers, don't panic just yet. You might just save some money after all. A new plan being considered by the Legislature would still hike the state per-pack tax on smokes by $1, but would also allow retailers to ...

It's a well known fact that most degenerates and other lowlife riffraff are cigarette smokers.

When smokers start "paying their way", a pack of coughin' nails will cost AT LEAST $50.00! That would begin to cover all the sickness, injuries, deaths, property damage, litter and the like attributable to freebasing of the tobacco drug. Smoking and tobacco must be outlawed, NOW!

While you're at it you might as well outlaw alcohol, guns, cigars, and what ever else doesn't fancy your taste. |
I guess we should outlaw Big Macs, fries, and Chicken Nuggets they pose health problems we pay for with obeasity on the rise. Maybe we should outlaw automobiles and smoke stacks they cause problems too. Maybe we could outlaw SUNLIGHT cause that too can cause cancer. Lets get real here. How far do we want to take this? |

Yup, going to NH for butts, then on to MGH for chemo. Maybe not NH with the gas prices. Probably better off saving on fuel and spending the $1.00, but if you are addicted, need to see the man. At least State gets the money, and not the Saudi Arabians and Cheney's boys, unless you hate our government and love the Saudis. Hate taxes but $5.00 a gallon no problema.

How many times have those same teenagers never started smoking since the anti-tobacco folks began grabbing money. Is it not time for them to never start drinking?

Where do you get your facts? I can't believe so many people believe what they assume. It is always rewarding to find another not quite as bright as me though, thanks for that. |
More people will be shopping in NH for everything, not just cigarettes. Make an afternoon of it. Go to one or more of the sales tax free malls, stop for lunch or dinner, pick up your beer, wine, smokes on the way home. For that matter, you can buy all of that at any NH supermarket, get your groceries there too!! |

To those that think allowing the slashing of prices will negate the amount of people that will stop smoking. I cannot agree. Consider the jails and prisons in Massachusetts where smoking is no longer allowed. Do you have any idea what an inmate will pay for a contraband cigarette? Not a whole pack, just one cigarette.
This is about nicotine addiction psychology, not inmate psychology. So stay in focus here. Do you know that approximately 5% of all cigarette sales in Massachusetts are Bootlegged from place like North Carolina, South Carolina, Russia. I tell you, that is the truth. If the Commonwealth of Massachusetts were to ever truly get heavy handed on the price of a pack of Cigarettes. I can assure you that a truck loaded with 8,000 packs of Bootlegged Cigarette would soon find it's way to a peddler near you. I can assure you that the State is more concerned with stuffing its coffers than it is with stopping its cougher's. |
Gottagift,
I can believe that illegal cigs in Massachusetts come from the Carolinas, but I'd be surprised to see Russian cigs here. I know the owners of a few retail establishments, and none of them are willing to risk getting caught with cigs that don't have a Massachusetts tax stamp on them. |
I think he may be talking about counterfeit tax stamps. It's just like anything else, when the price goes up enough to make it worthwhile for organized crime, they move in. |

Greg, If you want to vent, why don't you jump over to http://www.topix.net/forum/source/lowell-sun/... And vent on this gang banger that wants to pull a train on someones daughter and leave us smokers alone. There are more pressing issues in our society. |
Its only going to get worse if we all quit... You tend to pack on the pounds after giving up the butts... I suppose that would give non smokers something else to complain about! :o) ;o) |
Just the skinny ones and they are the minority :-) |
I purchased Russian Camels from a retailer in Natick once. Didn't realize until I smoked half the pack (very observant, I know). I just thought it was pretty cool and wanted more (not thinking about the bootlegging), but the place never had them again. And now it's gone for (possibly) unrelated reasons. The end. |
