I enjoyed reading your article. Some people just don't get it regarding the coming of the Big One. However, once they take a class they get it. I think it really opens up their minds that an Earthquake really can happy. Another item they learn is that the Fire Departments and Police will not be available like it is now. I have been involved in Disaster Preparedness for 11 years. In our area we only have 22 firefighters on duty at any given time, so when we have a large earthquake we need to be prepared. We also have some very isolated areas .We have CERT programs and the Get Ready Program. For Christmas and birthdays I give disaster supplies. The family likes that, it also helps them get started on their kits and their pets kits. Also, don't forget about Grandma & Grandpa. Give them a flashlight and do a home safety check.

When LA gets hit by the Big One, damage from the quake will pale in comparison to the "civil unrest" that follows. Your family may store water and food but don't forget that someone who hasn't is going to want it.

Your survival kit needs to contain some kind of self-defense. Sorry if that offends the liberal mentality but recent history can't be ignored ....

I keep saying the big one is coming and I have most supplies needed but not in a central location, they are scattered around the house!!!
I know we need to get prepared, but we tend to think 'it wont happen to us'.
This article has really helped to make me get prepared before its too late!
Thanks

Just make sure your survival kit includes at least one firearm. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

The fire, police and medical personal who are not on duty that day will have a problem getting to work and have their own family, neighbors and friends to help. The medical personal, may have limited medical supplies on hand. If the first responders can not get to work due to road blockages, they will help the local agency in their neighborhood. It is not someone's else problem for your lack of prepairing. When the expected big one, with the expected large aftershocks come; you can only count on yourself. Everyone at that time will have the same problem, survival. Your loved ones first, friends second, neighbors and strangers last.

Take the time to have some emergency supplies (food, medicine, clothing, blankets, money, etc...) set aside in your vehicles, garages, bedroom closets. Anything that you can get started and set aside, is better tht not having nothing. Also rotate using and restocking the supplies to keep them fresh.

If you are the one trapped in a house, apartment or garage when the wall fall down around you, having a million dollars inthe bank can't buy you anything. Having the supplies with you can and have saved lives.

Happy Father's day

I enjoyed this article and have actually thought about being prepared now. Sounds like Ms. Burke has her stuff together by teaching others how to prepare. Kudos to her. I hope that Bogert continues to remind us every 6 months or so on the importance of being prepared. I acutally called this lady after the article, ordered several disaster preparedness packs and I am very impressed at the pack and at her professionalism. I wish her the best and wish that everyone who reads this will follow and be prepared. I wonder how many are prepared for Hurricane Dolly tonite.

When I see how badly so many people acted during the LA riots, I hate to think how things would be with a major earthquake.

The police were unable to protect citizens or property. It could be ugly.

The more prepared you are, the more control you'll have over the situation. I was in the valley in the Northridge quake and it was the most awful experience. "The Big One" is going to be 100 times worse....I couldnt even imagine.
They say it will last for a long time. Not a few seconds like all the other quakes. Nobody really knows what to expect, however be prepared for the worst and hope for the best.

You've never seen the National Guard in action have you?... Be careful for what you wish.

And I'd worry about that Korean shop keeper with his "assault weapon" if you do decide to go "shopping".

U Apparently missed my point, genius. I wasn't knocking the Guard, they were the ones who finally took back Los Angeles in "92. I was knocking prince George "stop loss" bush for deploying way too many of them in Iraq, leaving us vulnerable at home..so much for homeland security! Now lets get some seismic action going, I needs be a new Big Screen!
