Documents on Jackie Robinson's court-martial up for auction

It sounds, at first, like the premise to a Philip Roth novel. A strange, alternate reality where one key event, one key decision goes another way and subsequent history, as we know it, is forever altered.

I have always admired and respected Jackie Robinson but I had never known about this aspect of his life. I recall when I was a young boy that even in Ohio where I lived and grew up there was a "negro" part of town. I also remember visiting relatives in the south and seeing drinking fountains marked "colored". It was the men like Robinson and singer Nat King Cole who cracked open the door for all that came later. It is a poor commentary on our nation that it had to be upon the foundation of their celebrity or they might have been imprisoned or beaten and killed like the others of lesser notoriety who came before and after.

This is a very interesting part of the Jackie Robinson's life. Perhaps you did not know that there was a movie about this: "The Court Marshall of Jackie Robinson." It starred Andre Braugher as Robinson and Ruby Dee as his mother. What is ironic is that Dee also played Rachel Robinson in "The Jackie Robinson Story" film in the 1950s.

A powerful story but hardly "relatively unknown"...It you cared to do 5 mintues research, you'd find there was a 1990 TV movie directed by Larry Peerce, "The Court Martial of Jackie Robinson" which has been re-run a number ot times. It might've been nice it you'd also mentioned Robinson was an officer, having attained this unheard of accomplishment for a black of that era with the influence of Joe Louis. In any event, glad to see John Branca has something to do since Michael Jackson's career went south...
