HOO RAH for the parents of these little children for having the courage to stand up to the Long Beach Big Taxers! For too long they have gotten away with standing behind "the children" in order to extract more and more taxes out of decent hard working residents of the city.
Their holding our little children hostage by threatening to close the library where they can go with their little friends for intellectual stimulation is typical of the tactics used in order to shame parents into voting more and more bonded indebtedness - long term debt that the children themselves will end up paying. We all remember how the Big Taxers wasted the money they got from the Big Tobacco settlement. That money could have been used to repair or rebuild every library building in the State - had the Big Taxers WANTED to do so. But of course, had they done so, it would have been one less argument for them to use to "justify" even more confiscatory California taxes, particularly those of Long Beach. This November we have a chance to help the Big Taxers overcome their addiction to ever higher taxes. Lets stand up for our children. Show the Big Taxers that we are onto their little game. Lets just vote NO! NO! NO! Aren't our children worth it? Ronald |

I first want to say how important I believe organizations like CLI to be. Their concern over the education and the safety of their children, the cleanliness of their neighborhoods are terribly important, along with their advocacy for the neighborhood with the City government. I congratulate the Leadership Institute for all of it's good work. The CLI obviously does a lot of good work. I hope that they also do a lot of good work reporting criminal behavior and assisting the police to identify drug dealers and other criminals, in particular those who carry guns.
However, it seems to me that this article raises a number of questions. Are these people pursuing their own goals, or those of the Principle of Stevenson, or some other leader in the group? This article makes it seem that Del Valle has been a resident of Long Beach for years, and yet she conducted the interview in Spanish. Does this mean that many in the community speak Spanish only? Does this group or the school in question provide adult English classes for the large number of immigrants which the article says live in the neighborhood? As far as the library itself is concerned, the building is obviously not useable. Blame who you will, the architect, the contractor who built it, or the succeeding City Councils who failed to maintain it, the facts remain the facts. The current Council is finally facing the fact that it needs to be replaced, after talking about it for years, and that it's operation is unaffordable given the current financial difficulties. They seem to be doing their best to make temporary arrangements while a new one is constructed. Certainly, downtown needs a useful, usable Main Library. There are few paths to get from here to there. Vote for Mayor Foster's bond issue to repair all of the City infrastructure which has been so badly neglected for so many years. Then demand the kinds of maintenance needed to keep it up. |

Robert J G Jackson you are right. Voting for even more taxes is just what the Big Taxers want us to do.
As you have so eloquently stated in past posts, the problem is not the lack of money, but rather the problem is that the Big Taxers, over a long time, have demonstrated that they cannot control their spending. Addicts will hide the bottle and lie, whatever it takes for them to get another "fix". The Big Taxers who are addicted to ever more confiscatory taxes are no different from the drunk. The hard pressed Long Beach taxpayers cannot help the Big Taxers overcome their addiction by giving them another drink, and relying on their promise to quit "next time". Lets be consistent in our argumentation. Lets help the Big Taxers. Recovery may be hard, but with our help they can do it. Both we and they will be the better for it. Ronald |

What a great story about community activism at the grassroots level. These parents want their children to have the same opportunities that other children in other neighborhoods have, in this case access to a community library. They obviously care about the future of their young ones. Buena suerte to the group as they fight the proverbial city hall. SI SE PUEDE!

What a crackpot! There is nada to indicate that el director is involved. Did it ever occur to you that they can pensar for themselves? Further, the principal would not be allowed to take a political stand on school time. As for the question of Ingles, si, there are English programs at the escuela for adultos. Whether the mujeres in the story speak English is not relevent to the story nor is it any of your bu |
