I agree with Mike. Shouldn't the money paying for these DA Police be better spent looking for real bad guys.
As for the debtors prison, I too remember that in US History Classes. There is no debt prison in the US.
This smells like politics too me. The Child Support System here is the worst.

I agree too w/Mike & Tim. The Police should be looking for criminals to keep the streets safe. Other Depts of Los Angeles County can do this type of enforcement. It seems like a big waste of our tax payers money.
Who was the elected IDIOT that can up with this plan?
Parents should pay for child support, but not be going to jail. That is 110% waste of Tax dollars. They should really be going after the people who killed all the kids in LA of lately. It's all over the news.

Does anyone know about the reduction of arrears? I have been trying to collect back child support for years through the DA's office. The ex fled to another state for the past 15 years plus. I know where he lives and works and the DA's still has trouble getting the $$$$ from him. My ex' balance was $101,000 and in January was reduced to $57,000; they are adding on $300 per month (10% of the balance owed). I resent the State reducing his arrears when it is state law that they are fined 10%. By the way if anyone knows information re: Christopher William Tolmasov who resides in Michigan, please report him on WeTip.

I agree with all of our comments. I think the best thing everyone can do is post the Deadbeat Parent's name and state, and how much owed

I applaud your agression but, life is too short. Enjoy your family everyday as, the deadbeat will suffer the consequences. The deadbeat doesn't need to sign over his rights. I would proceed with adoption proceedings and move forward. I think a couple of years of no-contact from the deadbeat is grounds for abandonment.
I agree there is no need for the deadbeat parent to sign over his parental rights>>let the owed child support haunt him forever. He can run but can't hide>>eventually even if he gets Social Security benefits his child support will be deducted. I agree blood doesnt make a father a father. I re-married a man who loved my 3 girls as his own. They call my 2nd husband dad and they call their father by his first name.

I would like to see the other side of this story. You (KNBC NEWS) only really showed one side, the press conference side.
Lets here from the real people of Los Angeles all the HORROR SIDES of the Los Angeles Child Support Divs. & the DA's office.
These Depts. have ruined peoples lives. They don't even try to correct there mistakes. I once called the Sherman Oaks Office of Child Support to work with them on payments for my daughter.
The Child Support worker told me to SELL MY LIVER AND KIDNEYS to correct the amounts owed, or else I would go to jail. This was just a few months ago.
The money they spent $500k should go to families that need the money. Not to the DA's office DA Police to go and arrest people for not paying. The Police need to do Police things. Like keep the public safe and go after the bad guys.
This is a screwed up system.

I am sure there are horror stories for both sides. You have an automated system and if you do talk to a live person they are clueless. What I just don't get is if a parent is ordered to pay child support and they can't pay then why doesn't the county force them to get a 2nd job>>that is what the custodial parent has to do>>I have had to work a 2nd job for 20 years while I am still waiting for $$$$$$$$$. The system definitely needs revamping.

My son as well calls my husband dad and the other guy by his first name and he wants nothing to do with him. BUT the point of signing over the parental rights is that my son wants his last name changed to our last name and if something were to happen to me my ex could sue for my son. I don't want my children going through that. I do agree with you that my time is not worth it and to let him be. I could careless if I don't ever see him again BUT I worry about my son if something were to happen to me. The law gives his biological father all rights even if he is a jerk.

I agree that there are deadbeat moms out there. But, the majority of people who fail to pay child support are dads. The reason that I hear most often that they don't pay is because they don't want to give the mother an money. If that's the case then man up (woman up) and take care of your kids yourself. And yes, there are plenty of deadbeat dads who don't work or quit their jobs so that they don't have to pay child support. They only ones that get hurt by this are your children.

Exactly the children. People are fighting over who is wrong and who is right! And lets all keep in mind. It is our babies that suffer.

I believe that all parents should take an active role in supporting their children. I wonder how all the fines got to be so high, as a single mom I receive less than $800.00 per month to support three children. Shame on all parents - mother or father who do not support their children. Child support is for the children not the other parent, deliquent moms and dads should realize that they only hurt the children when they do not make their support payments.

Well these criminal records being dished out to them are not going to help these guys get any jobs to pay. this is really about the funding the county gets from the feds. child support is a scam

I agree! The State of California took away Control from the Los Angeles DA's office some years back, one of the reasons why was becasue the DA's office was keeping the interest on the monies it collected from child support. Those crafty little politicians... This whole Child Support issue is a big pile of SH_T!!!

Mike - in the early 1990s, the system was worse then than it is today. I was one of the pioneers to reshape the Family Division in LA County. YOU HAVE OPTIONS. The DA's Office will NOT advise you of your options. You need to be proactive to get yourself out of the hole. I personally know of Dads that were able to go to court and Quash five to six figures from their arrears. My advise to you...DON'T get a Lawyer, they are a waste of money and the fact that you have money to pay for a mouth piece will only prove you to be a deadbeat to the courts. JOIN UNITED THE FATHERS OF AMERICA. SPEND TIME WITH YOUR CHILD/CHILDREN AND BE CONSISTANT. GO TO COURT AND YOU WILL BE FINE.
I don't know what planet your from, the child support system here in LA is all one-sided. Get a grip on reality man.
