I for one am very happy that you're happy.
We need more things like this is Hawaii for sure.

There is so much negativity going on right now in Hawaii because as you may have heard election time is right around the corner and there is nothing under the Sun more important than votes.

Yet I hope all these politicians pause for just a moment and recognize for once what people like you want and work on that because without you there is no Hawaii.

Not sure where that came from...kind of an apples and oranges reply wasn't it?

I would not have interned them at all but then it was not my decision.

I was just commenting on the letter, what exactly does being a driver have to do with the fact someone could be a terrorist? I recall a corporal who turned into one of the deadliest dictators the world has ever known.

Exactly. So the japanese were interned because they were.... japanese. Like the chaffeur, these people didn't wear a uniform.

And your first posting indicated they are already terrorist.

Isn't that WHY he is on trial, to decide if he was abad guy or not?

How many trials did they conduct for your Japanese interns...oh never mind, that happened with a democrat in the White House so it was ok, as was nuking 400,000 civilians....who also didn't gwet a trial to see if they deserved to fry.

I liked the first two paragraphs of Tom Pico's letter. He pretty much defined the problem. I think he could have included the feds (Hickam/Pearl Harbor complex) in his list.
I'm not so sure about his solution but if the powers that be pay attention to the first two paragraphs they might see the light.

Don't for get the tens of thousands of free/low cost subsidized parking spaces that government provides its workers. While wage slaves have to pay hundreds a month, the coddled masses of civil servants are given an almost free ride.

I believe he can be clasified a POW with the majority of the rights a POW has. Several issues with that as you pointed out (sticky area). The biggest being most terrorist groups are not signees of the Geneva Convention, no sign, not protected by it...

Interesting times though, lots of future decisions will be based on how things are handled now.

I don't think he is classified as a POW and as you pointed out, that is the issue especially when it comes to rights. I'm not sure if you have to be a signee to be protected by it, insomuch as you have to abide by certain rules.

And you're also right about the interesting times ahead. I've never known a war to be declared against a group with no physical borders. That's why I tend to think this is the third world war.

Bush's war on America has hurt this country enormously.

We'll never know (I hope) what we would do if we found ourselves in the same situation as that of John McCain, who served five years as a POW in the Vietnam War.

Some of us might have caved and said publicly whatever our captors wanted us to say. Some of us might have felt the same remorse that McCain felt after his public pronouncements. And, yes, some of us might also have attempted suicide after doing so.

I don't think I would have, but we never know.

And torture can make otherwise strong-willed men and women do strange things.

That is why Bush and Cheney and others condone torture. They don't seem to understand that if we torture prisoners -- military and civilian -- the enemy will do the same to us. And who can believe what those who are tortured said to their captors? Some, we know from experience, will say exactly what the torturers want them to say, just to stop the torture.

The proponents of torture -- Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Perle, Wolfowitz, Rice, et al -- should pay for authorizing and encouraging torture. It is not a civilized thing to do. It is not what the world used to expect from America.

And let's forgive McCain for what he said when he cracked under pressure in Vietnam decades ago. He's had to live with it for all of these years and that is punishment enough.

I'm not a McCain supporter, but for very different reasons.

What really happened to McPain in Vietnam is still classified at the requuest of McPain. Research that yourself. McPian was, according to his own testimony, bombing women and children in Vietnam. How he got shot down by a peasant army shaking their brooms at him at 30,0000 feet is still not known. He has a lot to hide. But more important, he lacks the experience and judgment needed to be president. he is an old cold war guy...truble is, this world is much more complicated today. Obama's high intelligence and grace will help us recover our losses in the unnecessary iraq war. The more McPain tlaks, the worse he sounds.

The staggered work hours sounds good until you try it out. If you work as part of a group and you start at 9AM and some of your peers start at 8AM and some at 7 AM, when you get to work there will likely be no place to park your car. That is the same with UH, most students sign up for later starting classes by preference. After the first few meeetngs they realize that they still have to depart at 6AM to 8 AM to have a place to park.
Mass transit of some sort is the only solution that will work in an environment that is as tightly packed as the downtown-waikiki area.

McCain's military service should never be questioned or attempted to be expolited politically, as was the case in 2004 by T. Bone and Fox News against Senator Kerry in his bid for the election. In my opinion, his military credentials far outweigh his senate tenure. Just look where the tenure of Senator Larry Craig got him
