This is a prime example of what's wrong with Hawaii.
Why are taxpayer money being used to play an officer, who is charged with protecting the people of Hawaii who was arrested and charged with DUI and, essentially auto theft?!?!
The full force of the law should fall on this officer. He should have been immediately terminated for not returning the patrol car. Besides, why is HPD releasing a patrol vehicle to an off duty officer?
Too many questions left unanswered. Smells "fishy" on how the circumstances of the case arose. How many off duty officers are using HPD resources for their personal use and on taxpayer's dime?
Hmm ... makes you wonder, doesn't it?

2 DUIs carry a better than 92% associated risk of alcohol dependence (alcoholism). Independent of what other actions are taken - discipline, conviction, sentence - he needs assessment, diagnosis, and probably treatment for alcohol dependence. The police tribal "understandings" make it very difficult to seek alcoholism treatment. But the officer is probably a rehabilitable resource, one that shouldn't be wasted. Punishment? Of course. But Sergeants & Lieutenants are likely to look the other way rather than identify their MPOs with treatment needs, because of the very real fear that they will lose those officers. It cannot be a knee-jerk response, dismissing police.

I used to go to Leslie's Place. It was sort of a hangout for the D-5 guys. Good times for sure.

Who's policeing the Police?
I see that Hyprocrisy knows no boundaries, and although the OIC(Officer in Charge) did the right thing, Officer Urban's second offense is inexcusable.
A regular citizen(taxpayer)would have went through gamut of: Shame, Counseling, Rehab, financial restitution, Revocation of driving priviledges, Increased insurance, and the list goes on.
Leads one to seriously contemplate what other crimes(felonious or misdemeanor)are being committed regulary by Honolulu's Finest and other PUBLIC SERVANTS/ELECTED OFFICIALS, and are not getting reported or prosecuted! Like a Regular Citizen's would?

Mistakingly,I thought I was initially at the other paper,HA.And after reading the article,I thought,"who's this new writer".
G.Park writes well. And I laugh at myself thinking the article could have been written by someone from the other paper.

Of the police officer:His cars in front of the bar.But he's not inside might raise suspicion of what he was doing.Or better yet, with whom.

Give the cop a break. It was really all about contact lenses and a sore foot.

Guess who will have a job next week - Ron or the cop?

Right! Both!

I'm not going to blame HPD but rather Urban himself since he and he alone is the one who screwed up.

However, I think we shouldn't "reward" him by letting him go on paid leave.....instead it should be leave without pay.

Sounds like this guy just isn't cut out to be a cop. Now he'll just be a regular ol drunk. This story is kind of sad.

No can do, remember Menor had "problems with his contact lens, how can he see in court, then there's the "bad leg problem" how can stand in court. But most of all Menor won't be able to get to court on time because he only drives on the freeway at 30mph!!!!!

Haning, somewhere I read that Hawaii has THE biggest alcoholism problem of any of the States (there are over 300 AA meetings per month... on an ISLAND !!)

This headline from last September also says a lot about Hawaii's 'hidden problems.'

Hawaii tops nation in alcohol traffic death rate
September 3, 2007

HONOLULU --Deathly traffic accidents in Hawaii were more likely to involve alcohol than in any other state, according to federal government data.

This information may also explain how the political corruption over there has been able to stay so firmly entrenched; you get people who are alcoholics or have some kind of drug dependecy, they are unable to process information / think clearly and thus they are unable to make informed choices (and they procreate AND vote !!!)

Ahhh - come on you guys - give him a break - maybe his contact lens was slipping and he had a sore foot from a previous injury -(had to have something to dull the pain)..
If its good enough for the politicians, why not the officer (one makes the laws, the other enforces)

Posted comments should be reviewed for approval first. Most of your replies here are TRASH. Pure trash babble. Half of you don't even know what your talking about, much less spell correctly. Don't assume your inadequate knowledge of the Department and its operations. Much less its policies and procedures. Lack of education is one of the primary issues in Hawaii, the blind leading the blind.
