Where's the D.P. story on Portmouth's racist mayor. If this guy were white and made the same statement he be out of office this morning.James Holley needs to be put out of office. He said and I quote "The city needs a black hotel. It may be my black picture in the lobby but it's a white hotel"How can that not be a racist statement. This is a great example of black racism being buried by the leftist D.P. editors.

Yes, I read that story in the Pilot. I cannot believe Holley gets away with his racist talk. This guy is an embarrassment. If this was a white person, they would be trashed, recalled, lose their job...and their radio show.

How many Black Developers have Hotels in Portsmouth? I don't agree with the platform used to lobby by the mayor, but there may be some truth in the need for a diverse economic clientel in portsmouth with regard to Hotel Development. I don't see this as a racist issue, a blunder in expression but i do not see this as racist. It may be true the man is challenged so far as sophistication and public presentation is concerned

Hey ... IT'S PORTSMOUTH ... and it's the liberal media. What did you expect? To be fair, the Wednesday Norfolk Virginian-Pilot put the issue in the front page above the fold and gave it a lot of ink, followeed by several critical Letters to the Editor on Thursday. The good Dr. Holley must be related to New Orleans' famous mayor, Ray "School Bus" Nagin. It appears that Holley and Sen. Lucas are hoping to rebuild Portsmouth as a "chocolate" city. There's never a hurricane around when you need one.

If this had come from a white mayor or any white person for that matter there would have been hell to pay from every direction , why is there a double standard when it comes to racism , what makes it alright for a black mayor to get away with this crap but not a white person ? We have seen careers and reputations of white people ruined recently for less!!

Look, he called it a black hotel. What does that imply to you? That implies to me that somehow he feels the Renaissance is unwelcoming to black people which is not the case at all. If he finds the Renaissance so bad, he ought to walk right in and take down his picture that is hanging inside. Who knows? Maybe he has some personal beef with the Renaissance but it is not unwelcoming to anybody. Dell wrote: How many Black Developers have Hotels in Portsmouth? They simply write it off as some loose lip weirdo, spouting off. Not that the entire white race has been offended and thus owed the head of the wrong doer. Thicker skin if you will.

I know this thread will get out of control soon, but I did want to chip in my last two cents before the racist ranting from both sides starts. It is true that Holley, Riddick, Sharpton, etc get away with being boorish, stupid, and racist. Imus is the perfect example of the double standard. Until the so called leadership of the black community and community at large for that matter, are held accountable for their actions and "words", we will continue to tip toe around race relations. You can't tout segregated speech, talk about white/black needs, etc and not expect backlash. Those that criticize this stupid speech from them are apologists of the worst kind. I have no place in my heart for KKK types nor people that trash whites.

I see the outburst as a proposal for economic diversity. I don't see Portsmouth electing a mayor who would be ignorant and not a representative for all the people. I see if as a lack of intelligence to express his concerns and desires for a broader base for economic opportunity. The man just didn't know how get a point across.

His comments just made me sick. For someone in his position to make those comments, publicly, and to think it was ok to say those things, is just ridiculous. We will never reach equality with that type of thinking from our leaders.

This post is also a lack of sophistication, to suggest that there are no Blacks no living in the box of Low Income who don't know how to spur economic opportunity is delusional. Why is it necessary to tie all African Americans to the criminal minded thugs who prey on the weak and are uneducated and unmotivated to pursue opportunity and interest through hard work, dedication and sacrifice. All African Americans are not unemployed or underemployed violent trouble makers that the media has a absolute love affair with.

Yes, he called the Renaissance a white hotel and said Portsmouth needs a black hotel. White hotel, black hotel, that kind of talk should be beneath him. The guy has no class and no sense. Jesse Jackson is so jealous of Obama, that he is against another African-American. What does THAT tell you? It tells you ignorance can come from anyone and Mayor Holley needs to just go away. White hotel or black hotel, there's no fool like an old fool and they come in all colors. From the Wavy article: "Fellow council member Elizabeth Psimas told WAVY.com ,'Did I agree with him? No. Am I disappointed? Certainly. Frankly, appalled might be a better word... I think it casts a black eye on race relations for this city.'" Maybe a poor choice of words in this case.
