So why didn't Sarabia look into this before running for office? It is unfair to the voters to present yourself as a viable candidate when in fact you may be anything but. I would think a person running for elected office (ESPECIALLY a person running for elected office) would take the time to bone up on the rules. And I had high hopes for this candidate.

He did! The rule was supposed to have been changed in 2002. He wouldn't have run if he didn't think he could.

Any action on the part of the board to 'appoint' Mr. Garcia to fill the position should be seen as disregarding the will of the people. Charlie lost, plain and simple. The people have spoken, and they said NO to Charlie Garcia! The people will be watching, and when the other board members are up for re-election the public will speak again.

I am disgusted that Mr. Sarabia ran knowing he was unable too. What else did he lie about?

If you caught the Streltz this morning, the Mayor clarified that this was part of a large number of changes that occurred last July and that the intention was directed at positions such as City Manager not Fire Department Lieutenants. Sarabia was not the only person affected by this Rule. Hagelseib was told that she could run and then told she couldn't at the last minute also. Now the rule will go before the Civil Service Review for clarification and interpretation which is the appropriate remedy.

I can't believe noone has mentioned that School Board Trustees are unpaid positions and holding the position would not create a legal conflict (under state law) for Sarabia. If had not promoted he could hold both positions. This is another example of City government creating TOO many rules.

The law says Joe can not hold "any public office". It was shown on the news last night. Sorry, Joe and it is about the law. I guess your group that was angry at the superintendent should have checked that out for you. Your whole group has presented yourself as "the shining example". It better include following the law.

RAM It's not a law, and there are no legal issues. It's a Civil Service Rule and is subject to review or clarification. And no, we're not angry. We're getting clarification.
And as I recall, we've always been clear that no one is perfect, it's what you do about your mistakes that matters.

I believe the fire department rules are the "Civil Service Rules" which in turn should be Joe Sarabia rules as a fireman. It will not look good for him to be breaking the rules. It was reported Joe is seeking legal counsel---sounds like he is questioning his own management. In my opinion does not make you many friends.
I've watched your group perform and speak at board meetings and my opinion is you always were saying things are wrong and you should follow our example. Remember the bond.....things have a way of coming back to haunt you.

It now looks like Mr. Sarabia is part of the problems in Socorro. Mr. Patton is too upset. What more does he have invested into this situation? I think the whole board needs to be replaced.
