First of all he was not a rookie second,it does not matter if your a rookie or an experienced swimmer which you are probably not. The ocean could change at any time. Just stay in sorry burbank we dont need you on our beach

That is very tragic, and my condolences to his family and friends. I almost drowned as a teenager caught in a rip current, but lucky for me, a surfer friend saw me struggling, and pulled me closer to shore. The lifeguard were useless. South Bay beaches are NOTHING like "Baywatch."

you have to be kidding me, to make that type of assumption you have to have an IQ of very low proportions. my thoughts and prayers are with the boy and his family.

This was so frightening to see yesterday at Manhattan Beach. The lifeguards moved so swiftly to organize and execute this rescue. I am so sorry to hear he is just a teenager. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

Very tragic indeed. My prayers are definitely with the family. We were there yesterday and it was such a scary event. Immediately after we pulled our family out of the water and packed up. When we were leaving we realized the boy was there with relatives of ours.

Please be respectful when posting here. This boy, regardless of age or experience, never deserved this to happen.

Where were the lifeguards? Were they out wasting time killing kids in the JG program? They should have been there.

They were there but he was pulled under the water. They had the boat out first, then I saw a lifeguard come out with the jet ski about 10 minutes later and finally a Sheriff's helicopter came out 5 minutes after that. They had all the lifeguards on shore out as well but at that point he was well below the surface of the water.

If you're a good, strong swimmer, you won't ever repect the surf until you're pushed underwater by a wave you didn't see when you tried to come to the surface for air. Not once, or twice, but three waves in a row. Only a hundred feet from the shore. At least that's how I learned that big waves might not be as fun as they look.

I was pulled under in a riptide and a life guard was there very quickly - My prayers are with this young man and my gratitude is to all of the life guards at our beaches doing a dangerous job keeping us safe in our amazing south bay.

I was saddened by this story and by the ignorant comments some people made.

Hugs and prayers to the family.
