Council forwards anti-nepotism ordinance
The Town Council on Monday paved the way for a strong "anti-nepotism" ordinance that would prohibit "immediate" relatives of top town officials to be hired and prevent applicants from working in departments ...

All I can say is kudos to Mike Henrick! It's about time. We, the taxpayers, have been watching the abuse of office by Jim Miron. The blatant and outright terminations, so-called "lay-offs" because of budget cuts, golden handshakes and other departures, only to watch more friends and family members of Jim Miron and others get positions that probably had applicants who were just as qualified, or better. It's been a "who you know" scenario for far too long and it's time it come to an end.
Too bad it's got to be grandfathered, because there's been quite a few "who you know" hires since Miron's been mayor. Let's see if they step up to the plate when he's gone. |

I am so impressed with Councilman Mike Hendrick and want him to know my huge following feels the same way. This nepotism ordinance is way over due. Under nepotism you don't always get the best and brightest. I am very supportive of good town employees and I want them to feel comfortable in their positions and not fear the mayor. They work for us, the taxpayers. Therefore, the next step is to remove the amount of power the mayor has because his attitude of "I am the mayor and I could do whatever I want" has to be addressed now. That type of behavior doesn’t belong in a civilized community. That type of attitude has no place in our town hall and council people, please be sure to address that issue next. The next mayor will hopefully be a solid citizen with some kindness and understanding of how to treat employees and taxpayers.

The so-called "new hires" (are you listening Heather, Ashley, both Buturlas, Sue Collier?) were hired as "at-will" employees. According to Mayor Moron they "are fine with that". We are fine with them leaving in December '09 too.
Now after all these examples, the CRC should reconsider it's recent vote on hiring/firing oversight. |

Over all it does seem like a whitch hunt, directed completely towards the Mayor, the Police dept.
It sad that it has to be, I'm sure that some of the relatives that have been hired are qualified. You can't tell me that None of them are... can you?? I think that it's not a bad thing to have on the books. Like I said, it might be going to far. Time will tell. |

Marco,
Lemme see if I have this straight...The Town Attorney and Police Chief are brothers. The Deputy Chief and Acting HR Director are husband and wife, their sons are on the PD as well as the mayor's brother. The mayor's dad is under investigation by the CT Attorney General. Who, by the way, will get his son's endorsement as Registrar of Voters. You don't see a problem here? |

The mayor questioned the need for the proposal, citing an existing ordinance that prevents employees from being hired by immediate family members
Really? I guess the Loschiavo family violated this ordinance several times. |

It's just a coincidence they were all hired over the past two years. |

I would like to see the ordinance even expanded to include contractors," said Councilwoman Amy Wannamaker, D-6. "But it's sad that it has come to this."
Didn't one of her relatives get hired as a dispatcher? |
Did her relative have an MBA too? |
|
I didn't say I don't see a problem with the situation now. What bothers me is that it is assumed that just because they are related, they can't possibly be qualified. Haven't you ever called a freind or family member and told them about a job openning somewhere? And if you read all of my statement you'll see that I agree, but am saddened. |

JoJO, This has been going on for years. It's not just since we have a mayor or this one. When it was just the council, it wasn't any better. It was hidden better, because it wasn't as public, but it existed. I'm not defending the mayor on this, but he is just the leed duck flying pased the hunters. The council is flying behind...as usual. |

The trouble with nepotism is not only qualifications. How would you like to be the police officer riding with the mayor's brother all day? Or knowing that nothing will be decided by the town attorney or investigated by the chief of police unless Miron approves? And which employee will question a time sheet with the deputy chief's wife in charge of Human Resources?
No...it is simply not acceptable with our tax dollars. |

There's an obvious issue w/the qualifications of Mayor Miron's brother working for Stfd PD as reported by/leaked to the Conn Post, but whether all these relatives are qualified or not, there is an inherent conflict of interest in all this nepotism. |

too bad bpt doesnt have this
