School discipline tougher on African Americans

This entire article is silly. Is it possible that the students are disciplined because they are disruptive, and not due to their skin color?

why is the tribune trying to incite a race war. this article and the one on blacks being disiplined more harshly should not have comments. Every article about black white relations has broken down to insults, name calling, and pure hatred on both sides. this does nothing to help the problems just agitate the people who post and read the posts.
If you cant moderate the posts efficiently you should eliminate them on race related topics. if this breaks down to race wars and riots you will be partly to blame. of the 700 posts I read it on the Jena Six free they appear to be almost all racist and have no contructive side to them at all.

What a bunch of pure bunk! Sociologists are perplexed? All you have to do is be around lower class blacks for five minutes and you'd know why. What planet is this newspaper located on?

Agreed. But as stories such as this used to sell newspapers, now they proved "click throughs" to internet sponsors. Check out the ads to the right and above.

Criminal records for talking in class?

OK, now I'm convinced. Some people just won't be happy until every black kid is in jail.

Could it be because African Americans are getting into more trouble?????? Do you think that could be it!!!! If they did what they were told to do in school like everyone else they wouldn't get into trouble. So quit using color and saying Africans get the short end of the stick. I think this article is trying to create a war using stats. I teach in a school with a lot of black children who ALWAYS act up and talk back. And I'm black! HA! I send them out and actually try to talk to them, but they don't wanna hear it from me because I'm too "white" for them.

Then if you want to talk to the parents (if they have any) it's worthless because the parents are even worse. The real issue is parenting. That's where it all starts. It ain't about money or where you're from. It's all about parenting. If you can't be a parent and teach your kid to respect and behave in school, then you don't deserve to have children. End of story.

who cause the most proplems in the school? that the question that needs to be answer. next why are they a disciplinary problem and how can we help them not to be expelled. I wanted my child to go to school and get an education. there should be one solution for all.

Now what race of students get into more trouble?

Why are blacks incarcerated at a greater percentage than whites? Same-old-same old. Their degenerative society, that's why! Want to fix it? Get rid of section 8, the Link card, and all other forms of aid, and hold people accountable for their actions.

A civilized society knows its "behavioral expectations," regardless of history, skin color, socio-economics, whatever. Quit with your apologist whinings, Witt.

Some things never change. As it was in the late 1960's, so it is in 2007. Discipline of black students was unequal then and it still is now. The cause is the same as well. People fear differences and will come up with any justification to prove they are not the ones with the problem. Racial non-relations will continue as they always have. Every time one black person does something wrong, it will be used as proof that the whole race has problems. It's something we have known and had to deal with for years. Until folks stop pretending that we are a color blind society, blacks will just keep learning to play with the cards we've been dealt. Unfortunately, those cards usually come from the bottom of the deck.

I suggest you visit Amazon.com and try to find some reading material to help you teach. There are plenty of books on the market that may be of use to you and your particular dilemma.

I don't have a dilemma. I did what I was supposed to growing up. These kids that have no parenting and attitude problems need the help. Teachers can't be held responsible for everything.
I'm tired of hearing the sob stories of kids with all these "problems" and they get IEP's so that they can be even more lazy and disrespectful because they have a "problem" I don't think this will ever end. It's sad when you're trying to teach children who want to learn but have to be disrupted by kids of any race. But it's worse when you say something to a black kid and you're either racist or they flat out just don't care because they haven't been raised to care. Such a shame.

It's not that we punish them tougher, it's that they do more of the crime. Look at the jails. If they'd behave like whites, they'd be punished like whites.

To follow this logic, why is there more violence in black neighborhood than white? Racial discrimination? No, because there is more violence in black neighborhoods. Perhaps the authors should try one day of teaching in an inner city integrated classroom just to note the difference. Why is it, in this city, that everything has to be turned into a race issue? Why not instead address the causative problems for the difference in behavior among and within the races and, especially look at why individuals in specific race groups are different in their behavior. Then do something about it instead of citing manipulative statistics.

Young black men are far more likely to be murdered by other black men than by any other group. Is that racist? If it is, then blacks are racist against blacks.

Is that something this brainless reporter and the sociologists he panders to want to answer? No, they will not even ask the question.

They fear the answer.

It seems to me that the problem is that black kids are not being taught at home how to behave. They come from environments where violence and verbal abuse is accepted. Now it has become the schools' job to teach black children the most rudimentary behavioral norms and social skills. And they have to do it while pretending that the problem doesn't really exist and all kids are the same. Why not just be upfront about it and make black kids take an extra class called "Intro to Basic Civilized Behavior?"
