Give me a break, that old code of honor BS has not applied in the big money world of pro sports in my memory and I go back a ways. I can’t remember a time in my life or reading about a previous era where there were not players fighting with management over money and it didn’t matter what sport either. Heck,“Da Coach” got traded because he was at lager heads with old man Halas when he quipped,“Halas throws around nickels like manhole covers”. I can’t believe Angelo, he finely knocks the ball out of the park with a draft pick and instead of being proactive, bumping the kid’s salary and locking up his most talented player he quibbles over pennies. Hester is the best player on either side of the ball and is grossly underpaid with an entry-level contract. I don’t want to hear about the details. Just pay the young man and let’s play ball.

One of the last comments stating that...."With multiple, high-impact collisions comes less speed and quickness, and maybe even less aggressiveness. The violent nature of the game tends to affect returners more than other players because they are so reliant on quickness."
Doesn't really apply to Hester. He very rarely gets hammered when returning kicks. If they're not kicking it out of bounds then he is either returning it for a TD or returning it as far as he can before running out of bounds.
I'm no statistics guru by any means but I'd say that Hester only got hit hard about 12-16 times last year.

I am will to put money down, that he doesn't have a single TD return this year, and is a middle of the pack receiver. i will take that bet, who are you pomp brother. you and he both are idiots

the last thing i think the bears need is a guy like chad johnson he may be a pro bowler but he is also a distraction. devin hester has so much potential as a wide receiver but he hasnt proved hiself as wide receiver yet and as long as they kick away from him he is useless there. On a different note, they need a qb that can get the ball to him and other receivers. I cant believe they brought grossman back, what a joke

Pompei, you're right -- they should at least CONSIDER trading Hester for the right package. This whole Hester holdout situation is ridiculous too considering he wants to be paid as a wide receiver but hasn't shown us anything to believe he'll be any good as a wide receiver. He'll probably still be dropping balls. Then when the Bears make him solely a kick returner again, will Hester give the money back and say he wants to be paid like a kick returner again? Yeah right!!!!!!!

Great article. You are exactly right. Very few players ever live up to their new contracts. Trade Hester now for half a dozen blue chip draft choices and let his new team meet his contract demands as his skills deteriorate. Don't pay him - trade him!

The entire team is injured, beat up, old & getting older. Hester might bring some good trade value.

what you just said justifies his moves because management's idea is his career will not be long enough for him to get paid,so he's best to try to get paid now(they seem to think returners are disposable as tissue paper)

Hester's right.$445,000 won't even cover a 1-month holdout! Yes, he deserves more money, but it's his own fault for not signing demanding more incentives with his original rookie contract. If he's SO good, he should've hired an agent that could MUCH BETTER represent his potential! He should play one more year to earn his raise.

With Hester, the Bears offense gets the ball on the 40.
So they punt from the 48 instead of the 28!!!

Dude you are freakin' nuts!!!! Take a player of Hall of Fame ability and trade him for some draft pick of unproven ability. It would be like the Red Sox trading Babe Ruth to the Yankees!
We the fans get to sit and what Hester perform his heroics all over Lovie and the boys while your hypothetical first round pick can't even make it out of training camp.

If the Bears had a decent draft history, I'd be behind Pompei on this one.
From Cade McNown all the way back to Mike Hull (who?) the Bears generally stink at drafting players. The '83 draft being the exception.
My point is, whatever Hester is worth in draft picks, you just know the Bears are going to screw up the choices.

Actually, after the shock of the idea, you have a good point. Maybe some team would offer the "Walker-type" deal for a proven return man.

Trade Hester? You would want to give up the ONLY bright spot on a team without anything to cheer about? Yes, you might get some great picks or even be able to pick up a few great players in exchange, but the Bears do not know how to do that. They would squander away anything good that could come out of a Hester trade. Hester is great on a kick return (except when he fumbles) and not so great as a receiver (no time to get the running start he needs). The offense is non-existent; the defense can only be beat up for so long before they can't support the team. Keep Hester unless you can replace the offense with players that can play.

Every article I read about the Bears making a trade, either Favre for Urlacher or Hester for a draft pick is just ridiculous. I'm almost done reading this paper as I'm starting to lose faith in the reporters here.

Anybody is subject to a trade except mega-athletes like Michael Jordan but be damn sure you get comparable value like a bonafide receiver or an ace quarterback.
