The Brewers just 1) committed 5 errors and, 2) lost to the Padres 9-5 to bring the Cubs "magic" number down to 2. There is nothing "magic" about the Cubs edging toward the post season by allowing Milwaukee to fumble their way out of it. The Cardinals finished first with a poor record and by the skin of their teeth only to win the World Series last year. The Cubs are 1) not the Cardinals who know how to close out a game or a season and their record over the years proves it and, 2) are tentative and have played like they're clueless against the doormat of the National League. They've managed to jumble Piniella's post-season rotation by the Marlins' sweep and with the payroll they are costing the ownership should be ashamed of their pitiful performance. Cubs' fans are loyal to a fault and they'll be cramming into the "friendly confines" for every game next year -- even if they tip toe backwards into the playoffs in a few days only to be swept out for good in the first round of the NLCS.

Chill out. Like I said, the Cubs don't have to get better, everybody else just has to get worse.

The little cheesetown team committed a franchise record 5 errors tonight.

The Cubs will squeak in. But don't bet the family farm that they'll go on beyond the 1st playoff round.

But you've got to get to the dance before you have any chance.

Where will the Sox be next week?

Headed out of O'Hare making their ways home for the Winter with their tails between their legs.

All they have and continue to prove is that if they make it to the post they will be crushed. At this point they really are in a bind. If they choke and don't make it then the sky will fall on them. If they make it to the wild card game and lose (a given) then they will be exposed as a weak/lucky team.

They are actually in a no win scenario.

Oh Ray P. You have put your kids in harm's way just because you live a in a Southwest slummy suburb and find it a shorter drive to get to the South side venue.

I have had friends mugged outside Sox Park, just ouside the Park because they had red hair and looked Irish. Remember 2 yrs. ago when a sportswriter was beaten into an inch of his life outside Comiskey or whatever they're calling it these days?

People were swilling hard liquor in the outfield seats at Comiskey last time I was there.

And you're worried about a few effete, urbane North siders drinking beer in the presence of your precious children? Please!

Obviously your comments are driven by another agenda, which you don't care to disclose.

By the way, Ray, I am descended from a Hall of Fame White Sox pitcher and my family stopped going there years ago because of the dangers inherent to the environs of that area.

Not one of you has pointed out the obvious: The Marlins typically play for 2000 fans a night; they have NO MOTIVATION until they play big city teams and they know the cameras are on them! They will also take 2/3 from the Mets. These young Latin players can play when they want to. But, yeah, why we brought in Trachsel and Monroe instead of grooming our young players and developing good team chemistry (like last year's cards?) is beyond me

Phil, Being a cub fan there are many things beyond you.
Most noteably enjoying your team winning a world championship.

Realize the Marlins are a better hitting team than the cubs. THey have been ravaged this year with injuries mostly to their pitching. But their bullpen is better than the cubs and it is doubtful that the cubs have better field players at any position. Cabrara and Ramirez are 2 of the top 5 players in national league. So you should not be surprised at all. Cubs have very weak starting pitching beyond Zambrano. White Sox have better team talent than cubs so tell Bill Murray to go play golf.

Bonehead move of the season goes to Cubs management for acquiring Steve Trachsel. (and Lou for using him) His only usefulness may be as a batting practice pitcher, but using him there would spoil the Cub hitters even worse than they are. All they really need to do is win one in Cincy. If they close the season with 6 straight loses and still make the post-season, they'll have no chance. But baseball is a strange game.

Abbott & Costello would be proud of the Cubs and for that matter the Brewers and Cardinals also. They keep playing Hot potato. I don't want it, You take it. NO I don't want it, YOU take it. Could it be that they are scared that if they win the division, they will be embarrased by one of the really good teams in the playoffs? I truly believe that whoever does win in the central division will be swept right out of playoffs. It is hard to imagine the Central winner getting to play the winner of American league pennant. What a mismatch that would be.
Just look at closers. Yankees have Rivera, Boston has Pappelbaum, Angels have K-Rod. And then there is the Cubs with Ryan Dempster? Like sending a boy to do a man's job!

what collapse?all the cubs need to do is win one more game.the cardinals won it all last year with 83 regular season wins.when the playoffs start everyone starts out 0-0.the 2005 white sox stumbled at the end of that season and also won it all.but to be honest with you i realy think the yankees are on a big roll.they have an unbelievable recored since aerly june and are probably the best offfensive team in baseball.but wouldn't the cubs yankees be a cool series what with the yanks moving out of their house next year?

Doesn't Lou look a little goat-like? I wouldn't be surprised at all for them to go winless the rest of the way. They will get in only because the Brewers will have trouble getting two wins over the Padres.

And thats the problme with Latin Ball Players they play when they want to. I think they get paid for 162 games not just when the TV is on.

Want to follow a club follow the Rockies... Home grown Player from an organization that worked hard to develop its own players not the easy way like the Cubs did and goes out and buys their players. I’ve been a Cub fan for over 40 years and I’ve had it with them. For God’s sake they can’t even buy a championship… How pathetic

First of all it's not over till the last out of the 3rd game. I think every fan of the Sox is posted here, all 15 of them. The only way a Sox fan can feel good is bashing a Cubs fan. Try some self improvement classes instead.

THE CUBS STILL SUCK.

They can't handle the Marlins...and will be eaten alive by the D-Backs, or any other playoff team because as the record shows, they can't hang with the crappy elite teams in the NL

Don't worry. Cub Fan hater Zambrano 'wants the ball' today.

When he gets his but kicked for the 18th time this season he'll blame it on the fans and then go home and figure out how to spend his $91 million over the winter.

All of 12, was he?

Cliff Floyd wasn't 19 when the Cubs crashed in 1969. In fact, he wasn't even alive yet.

Lucky for him.
