George Bush did however, institute the no child left behind act which has clearly shown that it does not work. Schools are only focusing on getting the funding that they need by passing standardized tests. There are no real challenging classes for students anymore. Are kids today lazier than previous generations? In a lot of ways, yes they are. We give them Ipods, computers, and plasma tvs in their rooms. The fault lies with us. For all of the people who say that parents let their children do whatever they want, corporal punishment or spanking for those of you who remember is now illegal in some states. Time-outs lose effectiveness after the age of five or six. Our mayor is focusing his attention on the 2016 olympics and schools are not really his forte. The whole point of this matter is not to place blame, but to come up with a solution. If it were up to me, I would give many of thes young men a swift kick in the pants and make sure that they are going to school. As these kids live in poor communities, many of their parents are single moms who probably work long hours and simply can't be there to watch over these kids. The men in the neighborhood who are the role models for many of these young men are the big-time dealers who have nice cars and pretty girls all around them. There is no easy solution to this problem because it is a problem that has been perpetuated over a few generations. I am a club DJ and have been one since I was a teenager. That profession is what kept me off the streets.I am trying to put together a program that can teach many of these young men a trade that will give them the option of not having to choose the thug life. It has been hard trying to find investors because it is in the inner city. I have been approached to teach rich kids to spin records, but I would rather focus my attention on those who truly need it. I guess I am one of those liberals everyone talks about.

I want to know was the Asians, Arabs or Hispanics including in this so called study because it is just as important that they are educated as well. Seems to me these stories are ran to get the blacks and whites to sling racial slurs at one another as oppose to creating a country based on the so called unity. If face fact neither race is going anywhere we have to coexist together so lets find a solution and get all of OUR young men across the stage and on to a life of prosperity.

The problem is that there are too many irresponsible black men that abandon their families. Children in a vast majority of cases don't do well when there is no MAN around (MAN, not to be confused with a male) How do we get them to "man up"? That's the real challenge.

I don't point the finger at Durbin because, unlike Obama, durbin has actually served the people of IL for several terms AND Durbin is currently performing the job he was elected to do (representing the people of IL).

Conversely, Obama hasn't even finished his first term AND all he does is go on book tours and campaign for other offices.

Most whites in Chicago were abolitionists, and many fought and died in the most brutal war in US history TO FREE THE SLAVES. Southern blacks came to northern cities Chicago, NY, and Detroit because of the opportunities to work. There are plenty of resources and opportunities available. Many southern slaves faced beatings and mutilation if they learned to read and write, but guess what ... they hid books and learned to read. They would be so ashamed to see their descendants today.

I bet that the northern whites who fought to end slavery would regret that sacrifice, too. Their white descendants are suffering, being driven from their homes and neighborhoods, being raped, murdered, pimped, and/or hooked on drugs by the criminal descendants of the slaves they freed.

Whites have been driven out of their homes and neighborhoods in a government-sponsored ethnic cleansing by HUD. Chicago used to be a city of neighborhoods, but not anymore. HUD has cleansed ethnic whites from the South and West Sides.

Should this come as a surprise for a group of people who talk about "babys' daddy"' instead of 'husband and father'. You can throw all the money in the world into Chicago public schools and it will not change one thing (other than cause more political hacks to feed at the trough). Wake up black people! MSK, I'm not sure that's true. I think it's rather that what passes for education today isn't particularly valuable, and thus isn't valued. Once you get beyond HS, the equation changes somewhat.

It is interesting that beyond the government near-monopoly of K-12, US colleges are still respected around the country, and the world.

Parents have much more choice in where their kid will attend college, which is yet another good argument for vouchers to break the union-government cartel in K-12 and improve the educational possibilities for kids.

I don't care if your white, black, brown, yellow, pink, orange, whatever, hard work and sacrifice will build character.

John Jackson says that leadership has failed to provide black males with access to the educational resources necessary for success. Phooey!

He also says the dropouts represent the future teachers, pastors, professors, and even presidents. No, they don't. It's the small percentage of black males who are succeeding in school that will do those things. The dropouts are the future criminals, drug dealers, and prison inmates.

A few people--Bill Cosby, Barack Obama, Clarence Thomas, and others--have pointed out that blacks need to give up their cherished status as victims and look to themselves for solutions.

Poor parenting is the problem, not lack of access to resources.

My mother was a Southside Irishwoman who grew up at 72nd and Clyde. My family attended Our Lady of Peace. Irish people built that neighborhood with blood, sweat, and tears. They were driven out by HUD and criminal blacks in the late 60s. They lost 50% of their home equity in one year. Now it is nice again ... and all black. This is not integration; it is ethnic cleansing.

Now the same thing is happening to me in the far SW suburbs. HUD is relocating blacks from high-crime areas to our neighborhood. Groups of 10 teenagers walk side by side down the street, yelling MFer FU. Decent families are moving out, and blacks are taking over our neighborhood ... all subsidized by our own tax dollars!
