Kids can't shut up for 2 min during a day, have some respect for God and other God fearing students, I guess kids today don't know how to obey the rules, maybe we need to get old skool on these punks.
Respect for whose God? Yours?
I don't think your God deserves any respect and certainly not on my tax paying dime.
If you bloody Christians were really Christian, you would all go crucify yourselves and leave the rest of us alone.
Or perhaps Ann Coulter's your wife and you want to "perfect us".

I am a teacher in Texas. We have a moment of silence for one minute after the pledge of allegiance. The kids calm down and are ready to go afterwards. To all these people on here saying "we need every minute we can get" need to get real. This is one minute. Prayer is not required. A kid can sit there and pray silently or for all we know he could be thinking about playing video games. Regardless, Illinois should give it a chance. In the end you might even admit you learned something from Texas.

Hey! Maybe we can have a moment of silence to reflect on all the money NOT coming in the Illinois public schools! What is the definition of getting less than nothing done?

This is another election tool for the stupids in the Illinois political system. You know how I'm dealing with it in my classroom? Hey kids...a moment of silence...1 second later...get down to work!

Buffoonery and uselessness describes it perfectly their antics in establishing the state budget was the encore. Families can take care of their children's faith and government should stay focused on government.

Regarding taking a moment of silence what about children by the scores being gunned down at Chicago Public Schools or in the streets. Maybe state and city governments should solve this problem first. But no it's more taxes, more intersection cameras, casinos or anything else for money. A moment of silence compared to all the time spent enriching the industries of violence (video games, TV, hollywood movies, music etc.)is hardly sincere.

For anyone who wants to argue this has nothing to do with prayer, take a look a the complete name of the bill. It is called the Silent Reflection and Student Prayer Act. Unconstitutional nonsense. I'm a teacher and as an American, I'll be humming the whole time and will encourage my students to do the same. Further, you reflect AFTER you've done something, not before.

Hey stupid! Did you see the vote. Republicans voted for it, too or there would not have been an override!

Blundering idiots! Who is this really for???? Why don't these demoRATS find something useful to do! Kids are going to get nothing out of this! I feel sorry for the teachers.

This law will be immediately challenged in court and will be slapped with an injunction.
This is a poor case of the state "backdooring" a Moment of prayer in classrooms.
My son's already take a moment in the morning and pledge their allegiance to this country...For me.
Thats more than enough....

I used the moment of silence to sneak a text message in while the teacher wasn't looking.

My problem with this has nothing to do with whether or not it is simply a good idea. My problem is that the state legislature for some reason thought that this should be state mandated when each school district could decide this for themselves. I shiver to think of the amount of taxpayer dollars spent while our voted representatives discussed this.

Leswes, in a way you're right. Although this is obviously pandering to the religious fruitcakes. What this moment of silence needs is a class on how to reflect on what needs to be done for the day. INstead of just jumping in and doing things helter-skelter. Yes, I know you teachers have enough to do, but it may help you in the long run if students do reflect on what needs to be done for the day. But they should change the name. How about "We passed this law because we didn't want to do anything important today and now maybe the religious whacko's will vote for us law.".

More worthless medling on the part of the legislature in areas they should stay out of while massive public transportation cuts are around the corner because it cannot address that important issue. Schools also need more money to actually educate our children, and our esteemed elected officials can't even do that -- but at least the kids will be quiet for a moment at the start of the day.

What a waste of time and energy. I hope the courts strike this silly law down. True conservatives would call this pathetic law out for what it really is - nanny-state interference in our daily lives. What happened to the true conservatives - the ones I used to vote for?

As a teacher, I used a moment of silence to get the kids to settle down and focus. It was pretty effective and a lot better than just yelling at the kids to sit down and shut up.

On the other hand, it is really amazing that the Legistlature that couldn't pass a budget on time found this burning issue to show its effectiveness- they sure showed old Blogo whose boss...

Politicians need to spend their time on school funding, since Illinois is basically dead last compared to other states. Our schools are broke already, and parents are compounding this by preparing to sue the schools that offer a moment of silence? Ridiculous! No amount of prayer will solve these issues.

I guess during this moment of silence, teachers can think twice about their decision to re-elect a man who would rather use the state teachers' retirement plan as his 'rainy day' fund.

If you voted for this man, you have no one to blame but yourself for his complete disregard for the real problems of education.

Nothing about how/when Chicago Public Schools will implement this? Geez, you'd think the Tribune reporters who wrote this clap could find someone in the state's largest school district to interview.

Not every teacher voted for him. I am a teacher and did not vote for him. In my opinoin, he is misappropriating the retirement plans of all Illinois' civil servants.

Does someone have a list of the Illinois vote on this legislature...I'd like to see how this breaks down, district by district?

If you have a link, please put in on here. It should prove interesting and enlightening.

Thanks

Reza
