No shortage of nominees for local media hall of fame

Great list. Now how about all the media in town and many of those named getting together to do what it takes to get the Museum of Broadcast Communications completed. And maybe get Blago to fulfill the empty $5 million pledge (of our money) to it. The building at Kinzie and State is surrounded by trash and in its incomplete stage is an embarrassment to an industry that has so much money and power.

The biggest TV personality in Chicago's history was Tom Duggan Please read about him at this web site (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Duggan ) and read the Tribune's about the reaction when he was fired by NBC in 1953. Chicago went 'nuts'. Also read or listen to Sterling "Red" Quinlan's interview mentioned in the Wikipedia item. I wrote most of the Wikipedia item and would be happy to provide additional information if you wish.

Mike Royko was the heart and soul and conscience of Chicago! If anyone deserves to be in a Chicago Media Hall Of Fame, Royko is at the top of that last, bar none!

I agree. Royko should be the first in. Unlike the reporters of today, Royko was as objective as they come. You would think he was a racist and a conservative on one day, and a left-wing liberal on the next. No one was safe from his pen and paper, and he avoided becoming chummy with anyone of influence because he might loose his objectivity. You could never really tell who he liked or disliked, because he just called the shots as he saw them on any given day.

I really miss him and sorry Kass, but you don't come close by a long shot.

Herb Kent (The Cool Gent) might deserve to be in your Hall, but how about Al Benson, Sam Evans (Jam With Sam), Sid McCoy, Daddyo Daley (sp) and Yvonne Daniels.
In the early '50s WGES 1390 had the greatest line-up of DJs found anywhere.

And lets not forget the early Top 10 guys like Jim Lounsbury,Howard Miller and Marty Faye. And while were at it throw in Two-Ton Baker.

Print guys you over-looked are the curmudgeons Jack Griffin, Bill Gleason and from the AP, Joe Mooshil.

Don't forget Ed Grennan, NBC staff-announcer (the last of a remarkable breed), TV host, and Emmy award winner. 30-plus years on Chicago airways.

I agree with CGull and Rick; Mike Royko told it "like it was" and with class. His was the first daily column we wanted to read, plus his books. We remember going to his annual "ribfest" down in Grant Park. It was quite the competition, not only the ribs, but the ambiance in the set up for cooking and serving.

Local but I believe infludential:
Jim Stewart and his wife, I can't remember her name, long of WBKB Channel 7: "Here's Geraldine," "The Gloveables," and the show where Jim basically showed his home movies made on trips around the world: "Passage to Adventure."

Terry Bennett also of WBKB, for the insane kid show, "Jabberwocky(sp?) Place."
Case in point:
Jim Stewart used to show cartoons on his show, and to start them off, there was a little chant or rhyme recited, and then the cartoon would start.
Terry Bennet used the same idea on his show, some kind of rhyme recited, then the cartoon would play.
Jim Stewart "visited" Terry Bennet's show one day. At one poit, the both decide to recite their respective "cartoon chants" at the same time. Result: Two cartoons playing on the TV screen simultaneously, overlapping images and sound, all at once.
