Berkshire Eagle

New fire station up and ready

Full story: Berkshire Eagle

It was a big night for the Great Barrington Volunteer Fire Dept. Monday night. With sirens blaring and lights flashing, the department's four fire engines drove from their former home on Castle Street, which they have inhabited since 1899, to their new digs on Stockbridge Road.

It's not a Waste of Taxpayers Money, this has been a long time coming. There's no way that the old Station can function any longer, the equipment today is far more advanced in size and function then the Old Appratus. These guys deserve this New Station and as a Fellow Firefighter I am happy that they finally have got a new station, it was well worth it and it was a Wise investment! Congrats to the Firefighters of Gt. Barrington.

i don't know why everyone is upset, this is just another white elephant for the great barrington zoo. does anyone else find it ironic that as the equipment gets bigger and the leadership makes the job more complicated that there are less people willing to actually volunteer their time ? thankfully the amount of major fires is down from the past thanks, in part, to better building codes among other things.

Waste of money, and also they have to go and put it in a stupid location. I work in GB and there is traffic backed up there all day long. I cant wait to see when they have an actual emergency. idots

How about a word of praise for the firefighters of Sheffield who not only raised the money for their new station but also BUILT it themselves saving the taxpayers the cost. No nonsense here.

Please ignore the posts on these boards, which are populated by Berkshire County's most mentally challenged. The GBFD has been there for its citizens always. There can be no doubt of the need for a new station. There was more than ample opportunity for citizens to be involved in the planning of (and costs) the new station.

Wouldn't it be nice for the Mahewie if they could expand their lobby in to the ground floor of the former fire station

I could care less if they needed a new fire station...my point is, is that i dont think that they carefully thought out where to put it....instead they put it on a road that is backed up with traffic at anytime during the day

And the town of New Marlborough as well. Both towns thought of the cost, needs and taxpayers.

Great Barrington could learn from Sheffield and New Marlborough who both have well run libraries as well.

What is your problem with the library? It has state of the art technology, expanded programing and access to materials in all of western Massachusetts? And don't start with Chartaock's tirade - more hours. The combined libraries are open 73 hours a week, more than any other in Berkshire county.

The library should be open at better hours, the staff could smile more, and if you look at the budget in New Marlborough for example and see how much a single librarian can do, well she is amazing and the best around.

Have you been to a board meeting to discuss hours? I thought not! And do you smile first? Ah HA!

The real waste is that we could have had the same firehouse for 4 million dollars back 12 years ago but was too expensive, apparently 9.5 million is just right!!!!

Finally the Town of Great Barrington looked forward and built something that will meet the needs of the town far into the future, Unlike the Police station and Highway dept where they went cheap and you can't even park at either location, let alone any possible room for future expansion.

Save now and spend twice as much later, that should be the town creed!!!!!!!! Looks like the town may have learned its lesson and did it right the first time!!!!!!

The police station has a lot of extra space in the basement.

What's the difference? It is about impossible for the firemen to get to the old firehouse during the day before. Does it really make a difference if there coming or going?
