I may be wrong, but according to a cop in Bumcombe County, I believe that you still can as long as you don't seem to be a menace or a threat to John Q. Public.
Believe I will go by what I was told at the Sheriff Department instead of Joe Blow cop.

Red Sox: HSD = High School Diploma

I stand firm in my opinion that State and/or federal geovernment should be removed from the responsibilities chain when it comes to firearms. To bear firearms is my right as an American citizen. Nowehere does the Constitution say that government can regulate firearms. They have, and they do, and it is wrong and unconstitutional.
I agree, somewhat, with JessicaB but I think we should hold elected officials responsible for the "Office of firearm safety" or something along that line....keep it a local citizen controlled organization, and not left to the government to decide for us. Bring the power back to the people, and keep the checks and balances alive right in our own back yards.

A gun-bearer's license would be just that, not a driver's license. I simply suggested that as a model. The background check would be part of getting the license, NOT purchasing the weapon, as it is now.
THE COUNTY SHERIFF DOES A BACKGROUND CHECK WHEN YOU APPLY FOR A PERMIT TO BUY A HANDGUN AND THE LAST PISTOL I BOUGHT"AT A GUN SHOW IN FAYETTEVILLE,N.C. FROM A LICENSE DEAKER HE RAN ANOTHER BACKGROUND CHECK BEFORE HE SOLD ME THE PISTOL. THE SYSTEM ALREADY WORKS. OUR COUNTY SHERIFF WILL TELL YOU THAT IT'S ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE FOR HIM TO PROTECT THE PEOPLE IN THE COUNTRYSIDE WITH ONLY 4 DEPUTIES PATROLING AT THE TIME AT NIGHT. I SAW THE SHERIFF FOR WAKE COUNTY SAY LAST NIGHT ON TV THAT HE CAN HAVE ONLY 10-15 DEPUTIES ON PATROL AND THEY ARE ANSWERING CALLS MOST OF THE TIME. MY SHERIFF TELLS ME HE WOULD LOVE F TO BE ABLE TO STOP CRIME AS IT STARTED BUT PEOPLE NEED TO BE ABLE TO PROTECT THEMDELVES AND THEIR FAMILIES UNTIL HIS DEPUTIES GET THERE. THE CALLS THAT ME AND MY NEIGHBORS HAVE MADE HAD A RESPONSE TIME ROM 20 TO 50 MINUTES. IT'S THE SAME IN ANY COUNTY AND PROBABLY WORSE IN THE MOUNTAINS WITH THE WINDING ROADS. FEAR HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH BEING A NECESSITY. MOST GOOD THUGS CAN BE INSIDE YOUR HOUSE IN FIVE SECONDS OR LESS. A GOOD 16 POUND HAMMER WITH A STRONG PRESON SWINGING IT CAN OPEN MOST ANY DOOR. Again we have to be able to protect ourselves.

All I see in these posts is a bunch of gun freaks trying to justify their fear ... I don't support gun control because it means too much government but come on ... guns are for the weak.
I have lived in many places and never needed a gun to feel safe. You folks take the 2nd amendment and spin it to feed your need to own guns and act tough ... pitiful.

Hypothetically there Dougie, if I were walking along a dirt road somewhere and I came across 3 really big men, in overalls, repeatedly taking turns having forced butt-love with you while you were on all fours, gagged, with one of the big boys holding a shotgun to your head, and I was packing I wonder if you would still call me weak if I shot each one of them big boys dead, and freed you from that predicament. Or would you call me weak if I turned around and walked the other way?
The gun ( in my possession )in this hypotheical situation could very well save you from dying from severe blood loss from your rectum, or from having your head blown off after they were done with you.
It matters not that they had a shotgun to your head. The story wouldn't change much if it was a machete they held.
The point of the story is self-evident. There is no spin here. There is no acting tough. The situation could happen, although highly unlikely, it is only a hypothetical scenario. There are thousands of other scenarios where a firearm would change the outcome and possibly save an innocent life.

No, the license I propose would require training and testing in the firearm's use, and would require renewal.

You really do live in fear and sound a bit like a stupid redneck with this statement. Next your going to tell me that Iran is going to fire missles at us ... please take a deep breath and try to get real.

No, I do not live in fear.
Iran may fire missles, but they do not have ICBM's that could reach us, so no, again.
I was making a point with my previous post that not all folks hide their weakness behind guns. Not all folks are weak there Dougie.

When I lived in those Western Carolina Mountains, nearly everyone carried a gun. Permit? Ha!
Wuts that?
