Let's elect a president who will use privileges to help us

Price/wage freezes and controls is one such tool. Any president can put a cap on gasoline without lengthy, wasteful investigations.

Maria,

Billiant idea!!! Maybe President Bush should, by executive order cap gas prices at $2.50 a gallon. Or if he really wants to pander and improve republican chances in Nov., why not cap the price at $1.75 a gallon! That would be great! Could you imagine paying $1.75 a gallon again?!?!?

Problem is, at $1.75 there will be no gas to buy.

What does gas cost in Venazuela, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, Iraq, Iran and other such places? When you have a monopoly, you can charge what you want. The Reaganistas/Bushies deregulated everything, destroyed competition and allowed the Big Oil companies to buy up/remove all the small companies, refineries and gave them subsidies! Results, no competition, then Cheney "conferred" with them and we now pay $4 per gallon, Cheney's target price back in the 1990's, when he said we should be paying what the Europeans paid. The price is controlled by the ones making the profit. There is lots of oil, refineries that still exist are running at about 80 percent and Bush baby has been bidding for oil to put in the strategic reserve which is at almost 100 percent capacity. Cheney and Bush are in close consult with the OPEC'rs and don't seem to want to use any leverage on them, even after we have expended thousands of live supposedly to protect them and their oil. Wonder why?$$$$$$$$$

Frank is very correct. I would not like to live in a country that the economy is controlled by price controls and I don't think anyone that will be elected as our president will use this method of price control.
We are the ones that have the most control in our use of goods and services. We are a very wasteful, careless, extravagant, and demanding. In fact, we are spoiled rotten.
We complain about our civil rights but care less about the civil rights of others. We want freedom but fail to realize that freedom is very costly.
Look about, be honest and think of ways and means that you could have influenced during the last decade if you would have tried harder.

I guess the editorial writer wasn't alive when wage and price controls were enacted by executive order during the Nixon administration. Thye didn't work. Maybe someone needs to read a history book. I know it isn't taught much in schools anymore but history education is a pretty valuable tool.

1. It is not the proper role of government to run the economy or set prices for commodities.

2. Price controls don't work. They fake reality.

3. Oil! Woohoo -- and plenty of it:

Executive priviledge. Our president Republican or Democrat should ignore the democratic republic established by our founding fathers and go straight for communism. The government will control the price of everything we need and even though that will lead to massive shortages and bread lines, we need to support it.

To continue, the cap on price will lead companies to reduce labor force, and cut pay significantly. That wonderful $2.00 gas wont seem so great when your all making minimum wage. Corporations will increase pressure on Washington to lower the minimum wage to be more realistic in this price controlled economy.

The government will have to step in to subsidize the populations needs. This will mean major tax increases on the back of huge cuts in salaries. Most of the population will be unemployed, and those that have jobs will find 60-70% tax on their meager income. The wealthy will have packed up long ago and moved to another country. Even that bastion of liberal socialist thinking, Hollywood, will have left. They talk a socialist game, but certainly don't want to live it.

Finally, as the rest of the world refuses to trade with us, at the prices we are willing to pay. They will just watch as that evil country that did horrible things like aid to Africa, and being the major economic support for the UN, simply becomes a third worl country, itself.

Things are cyclical, and like Rome before us, maybe some in this country think it's time we expire.

Ghost,

"What does gas cost in Venazuela, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, Iraq, Iran and other such places?"

Do you think the gas they produce in those countries would even come close to passing our EPA requirements, not to mention the nearly 60 boutique blends for different regions and different seasons that is currently required?

Further, how much is the price subsidized? How much, if any rationing is in place?

Many parts of Europe are paying $8 or more a gallon. How did Bush and Reagan make that happen to benefit the oil companies?

The price of gas/diesel in Europe is elevated by each individual countries taxes to subsidize public transportation, etc. and their own "special" requirements. Nothing has changed since Bush took office except his starting a war for personal agenda and at Israel's request, along with the need for war profiteering. Haliburton gets $300 per gallon for the fuel they provide to our soldiers and contractors. It comes out of Kuwait for the most part. His "war machine" uses more fuel than the entire USA civilian community! All the while "W" is competing for the gas to put it in the national reserve. He has plans to start WWIII by attacking Iran for Israel and we will be needing those reserves, all the while profits sore and gas will be at least $5 per gallon by election time and you will still be supporting Bush. My "self-esteem" is not damaged at all by repugs or their comments, they have no standing since they are nothing but "dittohead parrots" who cannot think for themselves, have to have Limbutt, O'Reilly and Hannity tell them what to think/regergitate/say!

Ghost,

Where in the world did you come up with the $300 a gallon for Halliburton?

Henry Waxman, hero of the left, and no friend of Halliburton in one of his investigations complained that Halliburton was charging $2.64 a gallon for petrol for Iraqi civilians, while American forces were importing the same fuel for $1.57 a gallon. That was in 2005. I am sure it is higher today. Further, that investigation found that Halliburtons "profit" on a gallon of gas was 26 cents.

you need to document and verify that Halliburton charges the military $300 per gallon, where is it?

Margins have been at 8 to 10% for almost forever. Insurance and Bank margins run around 10 to 30% is that Bush's fault also ?? I hear no complaints about their profits.

Better a "dittohead parrot" than an irresponsible delusional left wing blog believer.

Heh, heh, heh, it got your panties in a knot, didn't it? Made my day! Actually the cost, with transportation is about $8 per gallon, but the usage is more than in the US when you combine all the AF/Navy/Army/Marines/Contracto rs/State Dept., etc. Heh, heh, heh, this is fun, watching you guys fight to respond first!

So now the cost is not $300 a gallon as you have contended repeatedly, but $8?

Oh, and when you can, go respond to the smackdown you suffered on the " A way to fix energy crisis can be found" from Thursday. If you can.

Which you can't. Because you got destroyed. You will just do as you and all liberals always do. Point fingers and call names. Because you can't use facts, because they are not on your side.
