I personally think pigeons are pretty creatures.

I also think that if the public is more educated on the care and feeding of our wildlife, they will not be so apt to feed them bread. Pigeons are perfectly equipped to take care of themselves and are not dependent on us by nature of course.
Although I have never fed pigeons myself, I do enjoy at times watching others feed them. I do like feeding the squirrels peanuts from time to time.

I DO NOT like being told what to do by our Mayor. This is yet another fundraiser for the city - bottomline.

And Gary - forget it. As this issue isn't controversial enough ........?

i do think that this mayor is a joke!!! and if their is a animal/bird problem it need to be handled the right way not by having the wachos giving the birds birth control and thinking that is going to work.there is nothing wrong with people feeding animals/ birds if they dont gather in the thousands and that is what is the problem. they need to be thined out.thats what we do in upstate ny we have hunting season

True - as much as I personally do not like hunting, I know that it has been a necessity in certain parts of our country.

Mr. Councilman: While we are at it, could you please pass a bill banning trees? Because they sure do blow a lot of leaves around in the autumn and make the sidewalks messy and slippery. Also, we might as well get rid of grass, too--again, slippery and messy, when it rains. Actually, why don't we just pass a bill that will put a stop to rain altogether? Imagine how much easier life would be.
Pigeons? What a stupid thing to waste your time on, Mr. Councilman, in a city with a million pressing problems.

"The people of New York are sick and tired of dodging pigeons and their droppings as they walk around the city," Felder said in a news release. "The sidewalks, parks, streets and bridges for our city are littered with evidence that something needs to be done." said Felder

The people of New York and the USA in general are tired of the horrific daily news about animal abuse and neglect - Get honest Felder, you are just trying to advance your political career by making the pigeons your scapegoats!!
I cannot believe you are a person that claims to believe in God - you did not create the pigeons, they are not yours to kill!

What Pushes My Buttons wrote:
"It's not about spreading disease...it's about population control. Not sure if you've ever heard of something called "wildlife management". It's inherent in nature and happens to humans too (war, plague, natural disaster). Why do people spay and neuter their pets (dogs and cats)? The birding population can't be controlled through neutering, but when you have an abundance of a particular species in one area you have to learn how to control that species. Hence why landowners let people hunt their property"
"It's not about hating a pigeon. Or hating a dog. It's about managing species within a population.
Maybe if you learned a little about your environment and how nature works instead of crying everytime some offers some sort of solution."
You sat it's about managing species,
so you really think that giving birth control to pigeons is how "nature works"? You contradict yourself when you put that phrase together "wildlife control" - You are the one who needs to learn about your environment and also it is not inherint in nature for man to kill each other in wars - where did you learn that? Had a bad childhood?
"Yes and he's such a "stupid and obnoxious" person for offering to make a difference."
Well, I would not call a citycouncil "stupid and obnoxious" as you wrote, I would just say that he is trying to score political points with people like you, through demagogy. Try having a original thought!
"You people are ridiculous. Spend a day on a park bench getting **** on and I guarantee you'll be singing a different tune.
"
Why do you go to the park if you don't like birds? I got news for you, the park is full of birds, that is where they live!

I'm glad to see that at least the city is trying to deal with the pigeon problem in a humane way. Afterall, we brought them here and took away their landscape and natural predators, so we have a responsibility to act humanely in their removal.

The birth control sounds like a good idea, but it will take at least a few years before the population starts to diminish. The city should try employing some other methods to deter the birds from high-traffic areas through a sonic repeller, a visual scare device, a roosting inhibitor or a taste aversion. A combination of these would ensure the birds stay away from an area.

We provide only non-lethal, environmentally friendly solutions to bird and pest problems and have been the leader in bird control for over 40 years.

Thanks for the great article,

We don't have a pigeon problem.

New York has a problem with politicians. Got a repellent for that problem?

if anyone thinks new york has a pigeon problem, just go to someplace like piazza san marco in venice...

we do not have a problem. i have sat on park benches all over town, and i don't remember the last time i was crapped on by a pigeon. and in any case i would have taken it as a sign of good luck, like the venetians are supposed to do.

and if you do get dumped on while on a park bench you deserve it, because you are too stupid to move to any of the thousands of other benches around you...

EXACTLY!!

And while we are on the subject of other countries, I would like to remind people of the other extreme - Communist China under Chairman Mao.

Mao had this idea that he knew a better way to grow grain. He proclaimed that "seeds are happiest when growing together" and so seeds were sown at five to ten times their usual density. Plants died, the soil dried out, and the salt rose to the surface. To keep birds from eating the grain, sparrows were wiped out, which vastly increased the number of parasites. Erosion and flooding came next.

Bottom line on this - Don't mess with Mother Nature.

You know those filthy disgusting humans are so overpopulated. They dump their garbage everywhere. They pollute the air and the oceans. They wipe out forest and steal homes from non-humans. They kill non-humans for entertainment, for pleasure of the taste buds, to wear their flesh. They carry diseases. Someone should wipe humans out I guess.
Get real. Pigeons have a much right to be here as we do.
Who cares what you think of their appearance or how their lives "incovenience" you. They are sentient beings with their own damn lives. I'm not saying we should feed the pigeons but I'm just commenting in response to all the speciesist comments on here. We have to stop hating others, no matter their species. They aren't "things" to be disposed of.

Councilman Simcha Felder is an extremist and should not be in any public office which allows him to VENT his personal pet peeves upon the citizens or denizens of New York City. Obviously he either had a little run in with some falling pigeon splatter on his big black hat or more likely on his shiny new car (which we paid for). Well, big deal ---- that's no reason to make war on a species and create a holocaust right here in New York City. And he runs wild with a thousand dollar fine --- no less. What will be next ---- the death penalty for my little Aunt Maggie, 89 yrs old, who trots to Bliss Park with her little plastic bag of crumbs and seeds for her little friends. Taking this away from her may well add up to a death penalty.

Fact, Humans are the filtiest animal that plagues this world, they spread diseases, Garbage, they tear down trees to build parking lots, they are hell bent on killing one another.
Animals don't destroy this world, Mankind does.
Fact, our sun will continue to shine many many years after this world has been destroyed and by who, surely not the animals.
Animals were here thousands of years before mankind, and the Pigeon is mankinds oldest feathered friend, this bird has saved countless human lives, never has any animal helped mankind the way the Pigeon has.
Genocide comes to mind when I think of mankinds stupidity towards the bird of peace, but yet we idolize the eagle as our nations symbol (a killer).
We send our young people to other country's to fight for freedom and stress peace, but here at home we do the opposite of what we inflict onto other nations, a bunch of hypocrites.
Its no wonder we americans are hated all over the world...
This world was created for animals, why mother had to error so badly when creating Man is beyond me.
Find a mirror, take a good look at a disease spreading filthy creature called the human, and use the same reasoning....lets kill them all....
Get a life

"do you think that pigeons have rights???"

**Yes Gary, I think all sentient beings have the right not to be tortured, exploited, or killed for human pleasure or convenience.

"if you like them so much why dont you come bag them up and take them back to canada where they can sit on your house and your car.because the pigeons have every right to dump on your car or sidewalk right???"

**Yes, they do. Is it their fault they don't know the meaning of a sidewalk or man-made "manners"? Are they wrong of them to not understand human materialism? They don't understand. It's like forcing adult human morals on a human baby. A human baby wouldn't think twice about making a mess. They don't understand that it's bad manners. Should we imprison, beat, or kill babies who aren't "proper", "polite", and "clean"?

"but you animal rights wachos will come and clean it up wont you??? or do you just talk big???"

**No if a bird pooped on my bicycle I would clean it up, it's not a big deal. The bird does not understand my desire to have a clean bike. The bird was not intending to offend, he/she was merely pooping. That's all it means to the bird. He/she does not know any better.
