Fines for feeing pigeons? -- amNY.com

The earth is not for people only. Pigeons have the same rights to be here as we do. We can invent planes and even go to mars. Why can't we invent something to prevent their poop from "distroying" the expensive structures? Leave the pigeons alone already. There are other issues to worry about. Does anyone here know the price of gas? And why it is so expensive? Anyone know what the implications of that will be? C'mon, the pigeons are not the bad guys.

Fining people for feeding pigeons is one thing. You're telling us we can't give them bread, but the gov't can give them birth control pills?!!!! Are you serious?!

This is such a silly country to allow these things to happen to these poor animals. They do nothing to deserve the cruelty and punishment that we put on them.

I wholeheartedly agree with the ban. If you grew up in any part of the city you know that by and large pigeons are for the most part pests. Their **** literally rots away our bridges and buildings. They don't contribute anything to the city. They're not pretty and "bird watchable" by any means.

Anyone feeding a pigeon should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Perhaps their punishment should be having a gang of pigenos shitting in their house for a week and we'll see how they like it.

Typical of this city to believe that aimals don't belong in Manhattan, except of course the poor carriage horses that are badly abused every day. Yes, they bring in money, so that's ok.

Shame on our politicians who are for disposing of our birds; they certainly won't be getting my vote or any other animal lovers vote next time around.

They all should remember that they are "elected" and work for us, not the other way around.

It is outrageous that Council Felder would waste our money and time promoting animal abuse. This person wants to see pigeons starving to death in the streets of New York? Pigeons were brought from Europe and thrown into the streets of the City to fend for themselves, so their well being is the city's responsibility - contrary to what Felder wants, which is to see them starve to death.
There is absolutely no medical or scientific evidence of any human being getting sick from pigeons, in fact they are the only wild birds that DO NOT transmit the Avian flu.
The phrase "rats with wings" was made up by Woody Allen a few years ago for one of his movies, it is baseless!
New Yorkers are not tired of city pigeons and their droppings, they are tired of animal abuse and animal abuse promoters like this politician.

Pigeons are nasty filthy birds. They are disease infested.

I can't tell you how disgusting it is to live next door to someone who feeds these flying rats! I can't walk down the street without them being all over.

Tell me honestly what good an overpopulation of pigeons does for the city? They **** all over everything. Their ****'s acidity rots away bridges and buildings. Do your homework and you'll see that pigeon **** is more harmful to infrastructure than even the worst weather elements.

His bill isn't calling for the extinction of pigeons...just the curbing of the overpopulation of them. If they are indeed a "wild animal" they'll find their own food sources. Let them eat berries and whatever else they survive on naturally. They don't need to eat fuckin loaves of Wonder bread every day. Have you seen pigeons recently? They're fatter than ever. By no means will they starve to death. And if they can't find food in the city, they'll "adapt" and find a place for food.

Oh and yes, you pegged me. I'm such the animal hater. That's me. Idiot. And that comment about what do I contribute to the city? Hmm...let's see...how bout my city taxes from being a lifelong resident and working here. My support of the local economy. The fact that I don't **** all over the fuckin sidewalks. I don't believe we should do anything for the pigeons. That includes birth control, re-introducing natural predators and feeding them. Just leave them alone and eventually they will go somewhere else for food. If you are caught feeding the pigeons then you get fined. It seems the same as adding gasoline to a fire. Someone would be held accountable for that if it happened. No food for the pigeons and the pigeons go away. That's not saying we are killing them or treating them badly. It is saying they need to fend for themselves and find food elsewhere. Simple.

Banning Foie gras (Cruel delicacy) should be a priority in NYC.
Felder is the same man who has vowed to "bring chopped liver to work in spite of those who would like to ban foie gras". Felder was asked to USE HIS VOICE to help the League of Humane Voters of NYC end animal cruelty to millions of ducks who are forced fed by having long pipes shoved down there throats to pump large amounts of food to enlarge their livers. Felder said "No". Have a heart Felder, how would you like it if you
were forced fed food several times a day to enlarge your liver??

The yound ducks develop liver disease and they become too sick to walk, have foot infections, have tumor-like lumps in their throats, broken bills, pull out their own feathers, and die when their stomachs burst from overfeeding.

Foie gras factory farms are so cruel that many countries have banned this practice and California signed a bill to outlaw production and sale of foie gras. New York should be next to ban foie gras.

Felder, help the animals that need it now. Use your voice to speak of for the millions of ducks suffering at this moment!

Well, apparently Felder is anti-animal; I didn't know that about him not helping to ban foie gras. Another, shame on him.

Apparently many New Yorkers need education in regard to pigeons, but a bigger number need education about their politicians. Once we allow them to starve the pigeons to death and/or manipulate their nature, politicians will go on to ban other animals. Many of them don't like dogs either, so say good by to your pets.

THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO SCIENTIFIC CONFIRMATION ABOUT ANY DISEASE BEING TRANSMITTED BY PIGEONS TO PEOPLE.
But there is a pervasive disease that people can transmit to pigeons, it is called HATE

It's not about spreading disease...it's about population control. Not sure if you've ever heard of something called "wildlife management". It's inherent in nature and happens to humans too (war, plague, natural disaster). Why do people spay and neuter their pets (dogs and cats)? The birding population can't be controlled through neutering, but when you have an abundance of a particular species in one area you have to learn how to control that species. Hence why landowners let people hunt their property.

It's not about hating a pigeon. Or hating a dog. It's about managing species within a population.

Maybe if you learned a little about your environment and how nature works instead of crying everytime some offers some sort of solution.

He wants us to be fined for feeding the birds - this has NOTHING to do with the overpopulation of pigeons - that is a different forum.

This forum is about pigeon poop. Can you imagine - a forum on pigeon poop.

As a lifelong New Yorker who has frequented perhaps all of our beautiful parks, I couldn't care less about the poop - AND I do not see that much poop anywhere in New York. I have worked around geese poop - yes, that I have, which is probably more of a problem than pigeon poop until is RAINS.

Yes, the rain actually washes away ALL poop from the streets, park benches, etc. Poop is NOT PERMANENT.
