I saw the following video on Youtube today. Being an outsider, I ask the Swedish people who live there just what the situation is. Are there problems that are as bad as people hear about on the Internet, or worst, or better, or not at all?

Is crime better, or about the same, or worst than years ago. Is it safe to walk the streets at night?

http://www.youtube.com/watch...

Thanks for any comments about this subject. I am planning to visit Sweden within the next few years. I've seen other video's saying there is riots in the street. What can be believed and what is true or false?

I didn't watch your video to the end because the tone was clearly a racist one, most likely produced by a neo-Nazi faction.

The most honest response I can give you is that the video is a gross exagerration. In fact it is sprinkled with lies. I'm not even going to waste my time explaining to you about the increase in crime in Sweden over the last 20 years because your post is asking for advice for travellers to Sweden and not a detailed account of social delopement. Any visitor to Sweden has as much chance of witnessing crime as one would experience during Sunday service at church. Or is it so that you are merely trying to promote neo-Nazism and have no true business here?

I lived in Sweden in the late 60's and the nation was crime free and there were no muslim vermin polluting Swedish culture. Get rid of the non Europeans and go back to being one of the most prosperous nations on earth. Get rid of the narco nazis and the us style fascist drug laws too!

Not trying to "promote" anything. I was in Sweden in 1977 for about 9 weeks (not several weeks spent in several countroes). I had several Penpals (friends you write to with letters in other countries). I love your country, and I feel it is one of the best in the world. I'm hopeing to go back to Sweden in several years when I retire (place I work at does not allow long vacations, would only be able to be there a few days if I travel sooner. I'm just trying to figure out if Sweden is about the same as when I visited in 1977.)

Concerned American, you probably won't be gang raped since you aren't a child or a teen girl.

Thanks for your response. A few video I've seen recently had got me wondering what Malmo was like these days. I loved getting to see Malmo and all of Swedem in the summer of 1977. I hope to go back some day.

It is most DEFINITELY NOT "about the same as when you visited in 1977". SO MUCH has changed. I don't even know where to begin but the murder of Olaf Palme was the beginning of the end for Sweden.

Although the racist hype (on this thread) is way over-stated, there has developed a negative tone in Sweden due to (I guess I must say it) a new sort of immigrant than we have ever had before, who is unwilling to assimilate and who would rather destroy our way of life rather than to appreciate it.

Still, everything is relative, and your appreciation of Sweden might be still good depending upon from where you come. Also, as the situation in the large cities has changed drastically, life in the smaller towns and rural areas haven't change too much. So ..... give it a try and let us know your opinion. But any way you look at it, things have really changed and although being rated "number 2" in world democracies "ain't bad" it wasn't that long ago that we were "number 1".

Thanks for the information. Over here in the south states connected to Mexico, we are having problems with people coming into our country. At one time it was mainly just people looking for jobs, but now it seems as well to be about drugs and crime.
Phoenix, Arizona has "Crime Lords" doing a lot of kidnappings for example.

Yes, I know. I lived in Albuquerque many, many years ago (what a fine place!) and I've heard it's gone to the toilet since then. I also have relatives living in Tucson and they tell me stories similar to what you've just said.

Well, with all that in mind I guess you'll still find Sweden a virtual paradise in comparison!

However, we have a growing problem with a "certain nationality" that has introduced its mafia system into our restaurant and night club code with shootings and even a bombing and kidnapping or two. Luckily (so far) no innocent bystanders have been killed by their shenanegans. It's just a matter of time though.

So bring your bullet-proof vest, just in case.:)

Hi again. Were you an exchange student in New Mexico or just that your work took you there for a year or so assignment? I use to have a Pen Pal in Malmo (don't know how to get this to do dots over the last three Swedish letters ("a" with circle, "a" with two dots, and the "o" with two dots).

Hum, I posted a few days ago, it didn't get here.

Yes I meant the three Swedish letters. My son said he can show me how to print them, I think it's some "F" function key then a couple or 3 numbers. One of my former PenPals was an exchange student. Maybe you were as well, or maybe with a company that had offices in the U.S.A.

As for my Penpals, I'm still looking. Currently looking in Stockholm.

I sometimes find that my posts don't make the grade and are lost. Cyberspace, the final frontier.

I don't know the English names for those "tabs" on your Word program. Anyway, I assume you don't have the Swedish letters on your computer keyboard so try the third "tab" from the left which might be called in English "Insert", yes? If you click upon that you have another choice that in English might be called "symbols". If you click upon that you can scroll around to find all kinds of things to use, includng the Greek alphabet, the Hebrew alphabet and those Swedish letters you're looking for. Let me know if it works.

Sorry for the delay getting back to you. I post on a library computer and will try it when my son is here just in case I "lock-up" the computer.

I've heard about what happen in Norway several days ago. What is surprising is that it was a born in country person, not an outsider. We had a similiar situation in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma several years ago. This was a U.S.A. guy (not an outsider) that did not like something and took matters into his own hands instead of just writing to the newspapers.

I heard about some thing in Malmo, involving a shooting and a bombing of a Police (Polis Svenska ord) station in Malmo. Little news about it over here in the states (U.S.A.). Were the two events connected? Any information?

Annie Muk can't even say the nationality of criminals? Not being able to speak freely sounds like the way it was in the U.S.S.R.
Stopping looking at a video seems like an ostritch burying its head in the sand.
So what if the video was by people you wouldn't want to eat lunch with? That doesn't mean it must be untrue.
I have liked 2 of the 3 Swedes I've known. It seems a shame that Swedes have been indoctrinated so.
I've read that Sweden is number 2, in rapes, behind South Africa.
In Ireland a Jew is in control of immigration. Who is in control of Sweden's immigration policy?

I don't know that, but from what I'm hearing, they sure are letting alot of muslims in. I've heard there are now about 1,000,000 Muslims (some second generalion) to about 8,000,000 Swedes.
